Tenebris is the overarching antagonist of Super Mario Bros: Heroes of the stars.

Tenebris is an evil being of unimaginable darkness, who is formerly a member of the Star Seraphim, also called the Beings of Unimaginable Light, who existed ever since the beginning of the universe. He is also known as a mysterious, primordial, malevolent abomination that desires to plunge the Universe in everlasting darkness and death. He is the enigmatic God of Darkness, the former master of Princess Shroob before the latter’s betrayal and the leader and hive mind of the Children of the Dark, an army of cosmic horrors who share the same ungodly desires as their master. Due to his chief role in Princess Shroob's conquest for power, he is arguably the catalyst for nearly all of the events that take place in the series.

When he is in a calmed tone, he is voiced by Zach LeBlanc, who also voiced The Omega from Lego Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu, while he is in a furious and menacing tone, he is voiced by Rick Wasserman, who also voiced Amon from the Starcraft franchise.

Biography
Tenebris belongs to a primordial race known as the Star Seraphim, or the Beings of Unimaginable Light, a race of immensely powerful deities who were composed of pure light and possessed immensely powerful divine abilities, as well as being the creations of Lux. Like all Seraphim, Tenebris came into existence before the creation of the Universe as an illuminous, bodiless organism, aimlessly floating adrift in a void with his fellow brothers. Shortly after their creation, the Star Seraphim were granted intelligence by their Creator, Lux, giving all of them an immense understanding of their abilities and surroundings. Shortly after they adjusted to their immense powers over an unspecified amount of time, Lux decreed to his creations that he would create a vast universe that was to be populated by life, and the Seraphim had been appointed to aide him in the construction of the Multiverse, which left Tenebris, who was known to be against the idea of life, enraged. When Lux and the Seraphim refused to listen to Tenebris’ nihilistic rambles, Tenebris left his kind filled with madness and hatred. He swore revenge against Lux while promising that he would return and make the Star Seraphim regret their decision.

He then used his powers of creation to construct a mysterious army of various malevolent entities of his design that would share the same dark desires as him, known as the Army of Darkness. With the Universe finally crafted by Lux and the Star Seraphim, along with the Aeons and Star Sprites, Tenebris conspired to take revenge on Lux by devouring the souls of all angels and living creatures (as Lux loved them the most), and then eradicate and destroy all that his race had created. Chaos had reigned, but fortunately one Aeon remained incorruptible, his name was Orion. With Orion’s help, the Star Sprites and the Star Seraphim sealed the daemoniums into the dark realm, later on, Lux committed a heroic sacrifice to imprison Tenebris in the dark realm as well. Unbeknownst to everyone, Tenebris placed his essence in a sphere with a star using the last of his powers to do so. The Star Spirits, fulfilling their creator’s final wish, hide the object which it would be later known as The Dark Star in a planet that is Earth, which landed on the Mushroom Kingdom.

The Dark Star was discovered by Toad archaeologists in the Mushroom Kingdom. Shortly after it was discovered, Tenebris (which he is trapped in the Dark Star) viciously attacked the kingdom. It was later sealed away by the Star Sprites, and was kept beneath the depths of the world in Toad Town. It was said that if any great evil being broke the seal on the Dark Star and allowed it to attack the kingdom once again, Tenbris would be free to plunge the universe into eternal darkness.

Appearance
When he was a former Star Seraphim, he had six angel wings, two arms with three fingers each hand, seven eyes with ears identical to cherub wings, and has a bright glowing core in his chest.

Tenebris as his physical form is trapped within the dark realm, he always appears in the "form" of a gigantic, bluish indigo astral projection of a demonic skull with two dragon-like horns, seven eyes, hair, and a large menacing demonic smile. Tenebris’ final appearance is a gigantic, dragon-like entity with a cow-like skull, six arms with four fingers each hand, four legs, four dragon-like wings, seven glowing red eyes, massive horns, his hair is composed by a red burgundy and magenta flame, smoke-like appendages and a rib cage with an eye, following with a red burgundy and magenta light glowing around.

Whenever Tenebris takes possession of another being's mind/body, the victim's eyes become entirely red with magenta and surrounded in a dark purple mist-like aura.

Personality
Tenebris is revealed to be an entity that exudes pure malevolence, a sentient poison that actively seeks to destroy everything in his path and cause suffering to others. Truly cruel, merciless, sadistic, manipulative, and easily angered, Tenebris loathes the universe and despises all living things. He can also be considered as an extremely powerful, mysterious, and destructive menace towards all life, and relish destruction and death. Unlike Princess Shroob, who desires to rule the universe with an iron fist, he does not seem to desire any power, but rather destruction, and vows to do away with all life until the universe is nothing but a desolate wasteland, showing his extreme hunger and lust for destruction. Despite his incomparable fury, Tenebris is a rather patient and calculating being, having nothing but time to complete his plan, and has patiently waited inside of his prison for a thousand millenniums for an opportunity to escape.
Tenebris is shown to be an extremely cruel entity, as he enjoys taunting and mocking his enemies, as shown when he tormented Luma with the fact that he would eventually come for him and the others, and he greatly enjoys toying with the Star Heavens' desire for continual existence, and mocks the star sprites' desperation to keep him locked inside of the Dark Star.
Tenebris is shown to take great sadistic pleasure in the pain, suffering, and death of all living things, killing thousands of creatures off without even batting an eye about it at all. Tenebris' only response to the suffering of others is enjoyment, and it also makes a hobby of torturing anything unfortunate enough to fall into his clutches, subjecting Aeons and other innocent creatures to endless misery and anguish. His cruelty was perhaps best highlighted in his treatment of Princess Peach, when Tenebris managed to capture her, he locked her in a cage, and forced her to watch as he killed thousands of alternate versions of the Heroes of The Stars over and over again in increasingly horrific ways, which clearly took a heavy psychological toll on Peach as it was clear she was traumatized when Mario discovered her. A similar showcase of his cruelty involved Tenebris bounding Orion in hot shackles that left the Aeon in constant agony so he could relish his suffering, rather than simply killing him when he had the chance to. It is also shown that Tenebris has a strange but malevolent obsession with Luma apparently seeing him as a tool for him to use to break through his seal. His cruel nature, coupled with his manipulative ways, demonstrate that Tenebris is more of a sadistic, misanthropic entity, rather than a simple mindless machine of destruction.

Powers/Skills

Like Lux, Tenebris is one of the most ancient and powerful entities in the known Universe, having existed even before the creation of the cosmos. He is described by the Star Spirits as an "unconquerable evil" that cannot be vanquished, only sealed or imprisoned. Tenebris is also so extraordinarily powerful that he has nearly broken the seven seals and walls holding him and his minions inside of the Dark Realm, with the star sprites claiming that the walls of the Universe have nearly shattered from the entity of chaos' numerous attempts to escape his cage.

Despite the immensity of his power, Tenebris is not entirely infallible. Despite essentially being a god with his level of power, he has been defeated before in the past by Lux. In addition, although Tenebris is more powerful than Princess Shroob, Dimentio and Antasma combined, he is slightly weaker than Lux, and seems to be no match for the Being of Light on his own. Despite this, Tenebris is still highly considered a very dangerous threat to all of them due to his high intelligence, command over an army of other extremely powerful entities, and nigh-limitless resources.

*Superhuman Strength: Tenebris possesses immeasurable levels of strength due to his size and spacial warping abilities.
*Corruption: Tenebris can corrupt, or "poison", the souls, minds, and forms of other entities, seemingly permanently, forcing them to commit acts of evil and follow his orders. While preparing for his assault on the cosmos, he poisoned the souls of hundreds of aeons, transforming them into malevolent creatures against their will, destroying their innocence and beauty in the process. It is currently unknown if his corruption is reversible, or if it is permanent once Tenebris has claimed the victim's soul.
*Umbrakinesis: Tenebris is a master of darkness manipulation, having embraced it after exiling himself from the Beings of Unimaginable Light. Not only that, but he also can manipulate darkness and form it into constructs or weapons of varying permanence and solidity.
*Astral Projection: Tenebris is capable of projecting himself in the form of disembodied, demonic head that cannot be interacted with in any way by tangible entities or objects. Even divine magic and cosmic weaponry are unable to bypass this form, effectively making it invincible to seemingly all forms of attack. Initially, he utilized this form to prevent his physical form from being harmed and potentially destroyed, but that was after Lux imprisoned his physical body to the Dark Realm.
*Soul absorption: Tenebris has the ability to absorb souls, growing larger and more powerful with every soul he devoured. As well as being able to take souls himself.
*Power Granting: Tenebris can bestow immense amounts of power into other entities, either enhancing by far their abilities, or granting immense power to non-magical entities.
**Power Removal: Alternatively, Tenebris is capable of stripping entities of the power he has given them.
*Mind Manipulation: One of Tenebris’ most sadistic and utilized powers is mind manipulation. Interestingly, his mind manipulation is shown to be more parasitic, psychological, and complex, going beyond simply possessing the host. He is able to enter the minds of other entities and bend them to his will by manipulating the mental insecurities of the host so that he can control their vessels and assimilate them to increase its power.
**Hive Mind: Tenebris can mentally command all that he has fully poisoned or possessed, regardless of their numbers or if they are scattered across the Universe, to do his exact biddings. Through the hive mind, a diverse range of beings fell under Tenebris’ control, including Daemoniums, Titans, and other demonic creatures, as well as the roots and vines strewn across the surface of the Dark Realm.
*Necromancy: Tenebris has the power to bring the dead back to life, just like the many variants of the Heroes of the Stars, therefore, making them slaves to his will.
*Omnipresence (within The Dark Star): While his body is imprisoned in the Dark Realm, his soul and essence are within the Dark Star.
*Telepathy: Tenebris is capable of peering into the darkest corners of his victims' fears, regrets, and insecurities. He uses this ability to either exploit their fears to take possession of their vessels, or psychologically torments them with past sins/mistakes/regrets/events of their lives.
*Immortality: As a primordial entity, Tenebris is immortal. Indeed, apart from Lux and his kin, Tenebris is the oldest known entity in existence, having existed before the Universe was a concept, and reality was merely an empty void.
*Flight: In his Eldritch Dragon form, Tenebris could use his massive wings to fly through the air, breath dark fire, and spit masses of pure darkness that corrupt anything they hit
*Non-Corporeal form: Tenebris exists without a physical body after his true form is imprisoned in the Dark Realm.
*Transmutation: While corrupting the souls of his victims, Tenebris can alter the physical aspects of his targets, displayed by him transforming hundreds of Shroobs from Princess Shroob’s army into monstrous and disgusting abominations.

*Primordial/Celestial beings: Despite possessing divine magic itself, Tenebris is susceptible to entities who possess divine power superior to its own, like Lux or his brothers. Despite being omnipresent within the dark realm, Tenebris was also unable to track the Heroes of the Stars when they were in the dark realm, due to the immense power within Rosalina’s light shielding them from his detection.
*Indominable will: Both Tenebris’ mind manipulation and corruption are shown to have certain limitations; resisting his possession is possible, but it requires supernatural strength of will and character. So far, only three beings are known to have resisted Tenebris’ possession, Orion, Mario and Rosalina.
*Hive Mind Connection: Though Tenebris’ control of the hive mind made him powerful, the two-way nature of the psychic connection was also a point of vulnerability. Any pain felt by the connected eldritch monsters and demons was shared amongst them; the physical suffering of his thralls would translate to every other being in the hive mind, including Tenebris himself. This made the hive mind ripe for exploitation by his enemies.

*Tenebris is a word originating from Latin. It is a Latin word that means “Darkness”.
*Some elements of Tenebris’ character are based on the main antagonist of Final Space, Invictus. Just like Tenebris, Invictus is a malevolent cosmic entity of unknown origins that infects all life all around it. By the time it got imprisoned on Final Space, Invictus infected it like a cosmic parasite which is very similar to how Tenebris infected the dark realm by the time he got imprisoned.
*Tenebris’ backstory is heavily inspired by the Devil of Christian theology. Like Satan, Tenebris corrupted the formerly benevolent Aeons against their creators, and his punishment of being sealed within The Dark Star is based on Satan being banished to Hell alongside his followers, however, while Satan is only testing people’s faith in God, Tenebris is far worse than Satan as what he is doing was only for pure malice and sadism.
*Tenebris shares some similarities with Dormammu from Marvel, Amon from Starcraft, The Darkness from Skylanders, Invictus from Final Space and the Mind Flayer from Stranger Things:

  *All six able to corrupt sentient creatures into evil monsters.

*Tenebris, alongside Lux, is by far one of the most oldest characters in the Super Mario Bros franchise as they both existed before the beginning of the universe.
*Coincidentially, the way Tenerbis absorbs the souls from his victims is similar how The Dweller-in-Darkness from Shang-Chi and the legend of the Ten Rings drains the soul of Xu Wenwu/The Mandarin and many people from Ta Lo.
*Ironically, Tenebris is also called The Dweller-in-Darkness, due to his ability to absorb and devour the souls of his victims.
* The way Tenebris revealed that he corrupted the Megabug into Cursa in order to possess Rosalina is the same way as The Overlord corrupting a garden snake into the Great Devourer so it can corrupt Lord Garmadon in Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu.

**Power Removal: Alternatively, Tenebris is capable of stripping entities of the power he has given them.
*Mind Manipulation: One of Tenebris’ most sadistic and utilized powers is mind manipulation. Interestingly, his mind manipulation is shown to be more parasitic, psychological, and complex, going beyond simply possessing the host. He is able to enter the minds of other entities and bend them to his will by manipulating the mental insecurities of the host so that he can control their vessels and assimilate them to increase its power.
**Hive Mind: Tenebris can mentally command all that he has fully poisoned or possessed, regardless of their numbers or if they are scattered across the Universe, to do his exact biddings. Through the hive mind, a diverse range of beings fell under Tenebris’ control, including Daemoniums, Titans, and other demonic creatures, as well as the roots and vines strewn across the surface of the Dark Realm.
*Necromancy: Tenebris has the power to bring the dead back to life, just like the many variants of the Heroes of the Stars, therefore, making them slaves to his will.
*Omnipresence (within The Dark Star): While his body is imprisoned in the Dark Realm, his soul and essence are within the Dark Star.
*Telepathy: Tenebris is capable of peering into the darkest corners of his victims' fears, regrets, and insecurities. He uses this ability to either exploit their fears to take possession of their vessels, or psychologically torments them with past sins/mistakes/regrets/events of their lives.
*Immortality: As a primordial entity, Tenebris is immortal. Indeed, apart from Lux and his kin, Tenebris is the oldest known entity in existence, having existed before the Universe was a concept, and reality was merely an empty void.
*Flight: In his Eldritch Dragon form, Tenebris could use his massive wings to fly through the air, breath dark fire, and spit masses of pure darkness that corrupt anything they hit
*Non-Corporeal form: Tenebris exists without a physical body after his true form is imprisoned in the Dark Realm.
*Transmutation: While corrupting the souls of his victims, Tenebris can alter the physical aspects of his targets, displayed by him transforming hundreds of Shroobs from Princess Shroob’s army into monstrous and disgusting abominations.

Weaknesses

*Primordial/Celestial beings: Despite possessing divine magic itself, Tenebris is susceptible to entities who possess divine power superior to its own, like Lux or his brothers. Despite being omnipresent within the dark realm, Tenebris was also unable to track the Heroes of the Stars when they were in the dark realm, due to the immense power within Rosalina’s light shielding them from his detection.
*Indominable will: Both Tenebris’ mind manipulation and corruption are shown to have certain limitations; resisting his possession is possible, but it requires supernatural strength of will and character. So far, only three beings are known to have resisted Tenebris’ possession, Orion, Mario and Rosalina.
*Hive Mind Connection: Though Tenebris’ control of the hive mind made him powerful, the two-way nature of the psychic connection was also a point of vulnerability. Any pain felt by the connected eldritch monsters and demons was shared amongst them; the physical suffering of his thralls would translate to every other being in the hive mind, including Tenebris himself. This made the hive mind ripe for exploitation by his enemies.

*Tenebris is a word originating from Latin. It is a Latin word that means “Darkness”.
*Some elements of Tenebris’ character are based on the main antagonist of Final Space, Invictus. Just like Tenebris, Invictus is a malevolent cosmic entity of unknown origins that infects all life all around it. By the time it got imprisoned on Final Space, Invictus infected it like a cosmic parasite which is very similar to how Tenebris infected the dark realm by the time he got imprisoned.
*Tenebris’ backstory is heavily inspired by the Devil of Christian theology. Like Satan, Tenebris corrupted the formerly benevolent Aeons against their creators, and his punishment of being sealed within The Dark Star is based on Satan being banished to Hell alongside his followers, however, while Satan is only testing people’s faith in God, Tenebris is far worse than Satan as what he is doing was only for pure malice and sadism.
*Tenebris shares some similarities with Dormammu from Marvel, Amon from Starcraft, The Darkness from Skylanders, Invictus from Final Space and the Mind Flayer from Stranger Things:
  *All are dark forces who were thought to be the embodiment of evil, however they have a clear moral agency since they have a personality.
  *All six are capable of possesing other living beings.
  *All six long to escape their imprisonment and cause chaos and destruction.

*Tenebris, alongside Lux, is by far one of the most oldest characters in the Super Mario Bros franchise as they both existed before the beginning of the universe.
*Coincidentially, the way Tenerbis absorbs the souls from his victims is similar how The Dweller-in-Darkness from Shang-Chi and the legend of the Ten Rings drains the soul of Xu Wenwu/The Mandarin and many people from Ta Lo.
*Ironically, Tenebris is also called The Dweller-in-Darkness, due to his ability to absorb and devour the souls of his victims.
