This idea just came to me while I was in the car, on my way home

WELL. What I do, the easy way, is when your completely finished with your picture, use the fuzzy select tool, click a white space, and press delete. continue this until all the unwanted white spaces are gone :3
the other way, which is a little more effective, is make another layor. leave it transparent, and use the fuzzy select tool on the background layor, and delete until nothings there.
from then on you completely ignore that layor and carry on drawing
