Description
[Edit.2: Since I needed to enlarge the file somewhat, for printing at the EF, I took it as an opportunity to redo the whole light ray effect (which really wasn't good in the original!) and add some more details. It was very much worth it imo, you can view the old one here:Β sta.sh/01r2r5yzn57m !]It was a strangely spiritual mood that inspired this, and though the ray of light is not ideal I am tremendously proud of the fur. This kind of style is what I've been working towards for a good year now, seeing the effort come to first fruition after much trial and error is wonderful. c:
For those who wonder; the flowers are those of the 'Wolf's Apple' [solanum lycocarpum], a plant with which the Maned Wolf lives in close symbiosis. I'd imagine that it would play a central role in the culture and religion of their anthropomorphic society. Also ants. But ants don't look that cool raining from the sky.
But no matter what: I really hope you enjoy it, comments are most appreciated!
Edit: Thank you so, so much for all the lovely comments! The really make my day(s)!
Music: [May It Be - Enya]
A big thanks to balaa for being such an incredible artistic inspiration and motivation throughout the past year.

This is one of those pieces that, as I am browsing, grabs my attention and make me come in for a closer look even if I have done so before. The colors and the lighting are just wonderful! Β <3

I really like this, I keep coming back to study this.
I'm wondering how you got the shadow done. My newest painting of a tiger looks a bit flat.

Thank you!
The key is to really imagine the subject as a 3D object, maybe it even helps to draw a grid onto your sketch to better visualise it on canvas (Β sta.sh/026n9wrs53q8 Redlined this for a friend). Then you only need to apply the basic logic of placing shadows according to your light source. c:
Remember that details such as fur are absolutely trivial -only when the sketch+base colors looks like a finished piece in itself and the values are correct, the outcome will be as realistic as you want.

While I agree that the beam of light is the weakest part of this piece (it just falls so flat compared with the rich detailing of your style), the rest is simply stunning. The fur is particularly well done, great texture and proper flow consistent with the pose. The expression is my favorite part of this--an extremely human expression somehow rendered with a non-human face without resorting to a cartoonish appearance. Overall, very well done.

'it just falls so flat' Well said *sigh* I just wish I knew how to fix it D:
But thank you very, very much -makes me very happy that you like the character so much <3

and
ehkindred.deviantart.com/art/Lβ¦
are my favorite simple light beam tutorials here on DA. The best thing is often to find an example and work on really recreating what you see. Most of the problem with the flatness comes from over-crisp lines on the edges of the beams. There also doesn't seem to be anything creating the clear split for the beams of light (like a tree branch does in a forest), so it has that fake feeling because our eyes can't determine the cause. Here are some examples of a light beam with breaks that are soft, which might fit better with how the light source feels given the rest of the picture. I honestly feel that your character and details are just so wonderful.

Thank you very, very much for the tips and links!! This is really very helpful! (And you're totally right as to why the light in this pieces looks so weird)
Got this reply bookmarked, the next piece will definitely turn out better!
Thanks again for taking the time to provide these resources for me <33

No problem. And I hope they help with future projects. I always find that the best way to learn how to draw something is to often just draw it, and then improve each time (I still lol at my first attempts at buildings ahaha...good times). And I know I always appreciate it when someone who has something to say about something I've drawn can actually point out how I can improve. It's not "constructive criticism" if you aren't willing to help construct. And, again, you do so many things amazingly that it's obvious that you have great ability!Β

This looks wonderful, all your hard work has payed off!! D'ya think you could upload the process sometime? It would cool to see. ;u; The relationship between the Maned Wolf and "Wolf's Apple' is pretty interesting, makes sense for it to take on spiritual significance for anthro Maned Wolves. Ants falling from the sky sounds awful, though, ants and I have had a strained relationship ever since they farmed aphids on my prize pepper plants. D:

Unfortunately I didn't cap the process for this one, but maybe with my new PC I could try doing Livestreams again c:
Haha, how mean! Did you manage to get rid of them?
π: 0 β©: 1
Sagittarius-A-star In reply to Heyriel [2013-07-03 08:00:45 +0000 UTC]
If you do a 'stream I'll definitely try and drop by.
I use a brand of insecticidal soap to kill 'em, it works pretty well despite being safer to use than the harsher chemicals. It hasn't been easy to get rid of them all, though, they keep trying to come back. Sometimes sweet-feeding ants actually farm aphids on my peppers and bring them back when I kill them, so I have to kill all ants as well... now the aphids seem to be on their own, but I had some of that this year as well. There are some bugs that are just up to no good when you find them in a garden, and ants are among them. o_o Sadly, the pepper crop kind of failed this year, I half my plants shriveled up and died in the summer heat, even though the surviving plants remain strong. Only peppers seem to have been affected, so other stuff like tomatoes are fine- some years are like that.

Dat fur and dem details!8D
Awesome work done there though there's one thing that looks a bit off to me and that would be the muzzle. Compared to the rest of the head, it's too angled towards the viewer.
