Description
SO I wanted to do a quick animation that captured a small redesign with the three "female" emotions from Inside Out.Joy:
Joy's blue hair and blue eyes were such a distraction from her personality. It was basically a steal from Sadness's color scheme, and since they're supposed to be opposite emotions, it just felt too weird for them to be sharing the same hair and eye color.
Joy's hair was an odd short mess anyway, it didn't feel like it fit her personality.
So I changed her eye color to yellow, made her chin a little more pointy, and made her hair light up like a sparkler to match her glow effect! If she doubts herself, her sparklers die down and are at a danger at fizzing out, but if she's at the peak of her happiness, her sparkler hair might just emit golden fireworks! Now that would have been something!
Disgust:
Disgust was a little too "beautiful" to be a role of disgust. Disgust takes many forms depending on the person's tastes, so I thought it would be interesting if Disgust suffered a bit with her own looks. If she got more judgmental and disgusted, her hair would curl up into odd knots and tweaks. She would always have to readjust herself in order to go back to the way she wanted to look. Her face was also too rounded like the other female emotions, and disgust isn't a simplistic pretty thing, so I made her face more jagged. Her eyelashes were a nice touch though, so I left those alone.
Sadness:
Sadness was okay. I liked her form, sadness reminds me of a plump heavy ball, so her shape was perfect unlike the other girls'. Her cute sweater to hide in was a nice touch too. She seemed pretty perfect until I looked at the hair. Her bangs go off at a weird angle, and honestly whenever I'm sad or upset, I want to hide in my long hair. So whenever sadness reaches a peak in her emotion, tear drops ooze out of her head and make her hair get wet and sag down, so her hair can grow out almost like a wet mop that can reach to the floor that she can hide in.
Anger and Fear I felt had perfect forms.
But these three ladies needed some work. They seemed too simple to me.
I mean Anger catches on fire, Fear has cartoon eyes and a funny curl for exaggeration, but what do the others have?
Joy : glows. Disgust: long eyelashes. Sadness: ?
They needed some work.
Also they got out of character in the movie quite a bit.
They should have stuck with their emotions, but they were too humanized to accurately portray themselves.
Joy shouldn't had cried, she should have laughed until she cried tears of joy remembering the fun times she and Riley had. Joy would have stayed positive, and would not have given up. They definitely could have found a better way to go about that. They could have had Bing Bong cry instead and have Joy try and cheer him up from what she learned from Sadness.
While it was interesting to see the manifestation of the emotion of joy break down herself, I'm pretty sure they could have written a better plot climax.

If they made Joy blonde, though, she'd look like Tinkerbell (unless they redesign her costume). :'P
Anyway, I like these redesigns. : )

I like the redesigns, think they're very creative. Particularly Sadness.
But if they didn't humanize the characters, and left them to only fit this one trait, it would be a very dull movie, because the main leads would've been stale. And in some regard, many could find super-happy Joy annoying. And her crying could be have helped her understand the role of sadness better, because she experienced it first hand. It let out her frustration, slowed her down, and got her to assess the problem correctly, and admit there's a problem at all. Like Sadness is meant to do.

Well I liked them humanizing them to an extent, but otherwise they could have stuck to their emotion without the movie being dull.
Like for example, when the moving scene popped up and they were all screaming, they all could have had very specific personalities like little thoughts flowing through Riley's head.
Joy: Oh boy! I wonder what new house or new friends we'll make!
Anger: ugh oh great. Moving is so tedious.
Disgust: ew gross look at all this dust we are having a way cleaner room at the new place than this.
Sadness: we're leaving behind all our friends and good memories...
fear: what if no one accepts us?! What if things go wrong when we move? things could never be the same!
I feel like the characters could have definitely stayed more in-character than they were in the movie a bit without making it a dull movie. And sometimes Joy could be a super annoying character, of course it all depends on the person. Not every character has to be completely likable.
I see multiple ways they could have gone about things that could have worked out better.
and I think the whole "tears of joy" concept could have gone a very interesting way.
Even if I wanted to keep Joy's crying scene, I felt like they should have messed with her body a little more, like she started to lose her glow or disappear herself because even she was giving up on saving Riley since things seemed hopeless.
If she had cried tears of joy from all the happy memories, and smiled almost sadly, she'd still somewhat be in character, but then she'd use one of those tears to wipe back the memory and realize sadness was the reason it turned into a happy memory. So they could have still kept her in a better form of character all the while keeping a sad scene like that.
Humanizing the characters is definitely important, but their personalities were a little too off centered. They all could of course share a bit of each other's emotions, seeing as emotions mix together in the end, but otherwise its still best to have a main focus on each character. Joy is the only positive character it seems, and she has to struggle to keep up with all the other negative emotions, so I think for her personality she could have stayed more positive. She of course could have still stayed a control freak and kinda get insane or worried if a negative emotion tried to take over, but otherwise she's the one to always see the light of a situation, so I think the movie could have just gone many different directions. But they wanted to keep the plot simple, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

The likability of the characters wouldn't have nearly been as successful as it is now if they only experienced their one emotion. It ends up making them less into people we can sympathize with and more into one dimensional caricatures. By making them feel other things, it allows the audience to feel more connected to the emotions. I mean, the tears of Joy scene is amazing because of all the depth it had. This line though:
"She of course could have still stayed a control freak and kinda get insane or worried if a negative emotion tried to take over, but otherwise she's the one to always see the light of a situation"
That's pretty much who she was in the movie.

Wouldn't them only having one reaction to the same situation make them more jokes instead of identifiable characters? And if you're looking for that scene, just look to the first day of school clip.
Allot of the people find the humanization a plus, because if you're going to humanize the emotions, you should make the emotions human, and have traits that coincide with their role. Disgusts role is to dictate Riley's taste, ergo she's much more high maintenance, judgemental, arrogant, and sassy. Anger is to protect her from being treated unfairly, ergo he's actually much calmer a good lot of the time, sarcastic, blowing his stack over what he feels important, in control in a time when she was feeling the most wronged, and enjoys aggressive acts, like cursing. Fear is to protect her from harm, so he's much more calculating, high strung, and cowardly.
Maybe it's off center for the emotions themselves, but it's definitely on point with the characters themselves.
Like you said before, Joy and Riley were more or less, in denial, and the breakdown made her see that. I don't think the tears of joy would've worked, especially in the narrative sense, where everything she worked her life on, collapsed on her.

I don't understand how they would be jokes if they stuck more to their character?
Everyone else seemed totally fine even with small crossovers of emotion, but the only thing that really stood out for me and many others was Joy's crying scene. That was the only thing that put up a lot of weird vibes about her character traits considering the amount of hope she had for Riley throughout the whole movie up until that point. It was kinda weird how she didn't start disappearing along with Bing Bong in that crevice, even if she's a special emotion.
Yes! those are all totally great to be associated with those emotions and those are fine. Joy's crying scene was just odd is all. I would have loved to see some effect on herself because she's basically doing the opposite of the emotion she is, which was what my friends and I thought made her somewhat out of character.
The movie's plot isn't perfect either, Joy and Sadness were introduced to a way up to headquarters in the begging when the gum commercial memory was sent up through a thought tube. They could have asked the long term memory workers if they knew a way back to headquarters as well, but sadly neither of them really picked up on that.(besides Sadness, whom Joy kept ignoring) Of course, most of the movie wouldn't have happened if they had picked that up right away.
The imaginary boyfriend thing was good for a laugh, but when we came back to that near the end of the movie, that part was a little too ridiculous. They spent this whole time running around Riley's head trying to find a way back to headquarters and go through all these casualties, and in the end they get to the headquarters by trampoline bouncing off a ladder of imaginary boyfriends?
A good laugh, but felt rushed and almost tragic that it would have been that easy to get to headquarters.

I liked the scene, but I guess I could see why others would have a problem with it.
Also, this reminded me of this:

I do not know why you brought up the boyfriends thing.

^ Came here to say this
I think it's a good thing that Joy was shown to cry, that the Emotions were clearly shown to be capable of feeling other emotions. We see this before the memory dump scene anyway; they all get afraid, sad, annoyed, etc. If they didn't feel more beyond their main emotion, these would be very dull characters.
I like your redesigns though; love the ideas about Sadness and Disgust's hair in particular. Joy's though, that would have been a little much; distracting with too much going on. Her normal hair design, I felt, fit her personality fine; it was short and messy, implying that she's wild and doesn't have a care in the world, which is helped by the fact that she never wears shoes.

Probably best you post this as a comment on her art instead of a reply, because she's probably not going to see it here.
But thank you, glad you agree.

I agree with both of you. The humanization the characters had was perfect to me!
Nevertheless, I do think that the characters' design could have had a few changes. Joy would have looked lovely with amber hair and/or eyes. Maybe with a few highlights, but not completely yellow or golden because it would make the character visually boring (Also, I don't think it could shoot fireworks, 'cause it would be too difficult to animate, though it would be cool ).
I really think Sadness' official look was great, but I had a real problem with Disgust. Her hair seemed a bit unoriginal. I would have liked it if she had it longer or more wavery. In fact, original designs gave her hair that reached her ankles. I liked her face like it ir in this picture, though.

Eh, cool...? Well, even if Joy and Sadness are opposites they share the same eye and hair color because they need each other.
