Muertos was sure this was karma. It couldn't be anything else.

The chase from the herd had been long and exhausting. The stallion had dogged her heels the entire time, nipping her when she slowed, and keeping their breakneck pace until it felt like her hooves were going to drop off. It wasn't until the sun rose on a foggy, cloudy morning that they slowed. They had long left the forest behind and were in the midst of the plains. Her sides heaved as she tried to catch her breath, sweat dripping down her coat. The cold fall air was making her shiver uncontrollably, but her complaints she voiced fell on deaf ears. The stallion kept a foul expression on his face and only breaking his silence to tell her to keep moving.

A long, winding river cut through the stream. She spotted three pale figures who lingered around the muddy banks. She wanted to cry out and ask for help, but before she could, the stallion let out a greeting call. The two figures raised their head, whinnying back. Dread filled her limbs as she realized that these mares were his. He snaked her along until she reached the other mares, where he finally allowed her some space. Muertos considered making a break for it, but exhaustion hung heavy on her shoulders.

"Hello!" A cheerful voice chirped. Muertos swung her head around towards a pale dun mare who smiled brightly at her. Muertos offered her a wary look. "What's your name?"

"...Muertos. You are...?"

"Daisy, but now I go by the name Gypsum! How did you meet Mister Leander?"

"...Leander?"

"Our stallion! He didn't introduce himself to you? He can be pretty rough on the edges, but he's such a nice-"

"Nice?! I don't know what your definition of 'nice' is but-" she snarled, but was cut off.

"Gypsum, will you come here, darling?" A soft voice called. A willowy, gray paint mare called, a gentle smile on her face. Gypsum grinned and splashed across the river to join her. Quiet words were exchanged before the gray mare approached, crossing the river carefully.

"My name is Dove, and my daughter's name is Olive. You're Muertos?" She nodded, offering her a suspicious look.

"You'll have to excuse Gypsum, she's... young. She joined willingly, unlike us. She's still quite enamored with the idea of being in her first herd outside of her birth herd,"

"You were stolen, too?"

"Yes, sadly. I've... passed around many herds recently and was caught by Leander. I've been here a bit longer than Gypsum,"

"And you haven't tried escaping?"

"I planned on it until Gypsum joined us. She... complicated things. Leander is only kind to her through my pleading. If I left... I don't know what would happen to her,"

Muertos cast a glance at the pale dun filly who grazed by her lonesome. The girl caught her staring and smiled at her before returning to the grass. By her side was a small foal, who Muertos assumed to be Olive.

"I'm not staying here," Muertos said firmly, turning back to Dove.

"I don't plan on it either. Perhaps we could work together to get away from him?" The tall mare suggested. She eyed her up before relenting.

"Fine. The sooner, the better,"
