Description
01/2021 edit: I've been doing some thinking about the whole internet trend of "fixing" character designs, and while I must admit that that was basically what I was going for here, it was mainly for fun and for my personal taste since I found the character of Nadia to be vile, tropey, stereotypical, and unfair. I wanted to draw something that would give her justice according to what I think a young teenager would be more likely to wear. I do, however, still think the series was a milestone in Black folks in anime representation, but since I am not Kenyan or subsaharan African myself, I cannot speak for the folks who would or would not take offense at her design. Also omg i clearly did not know how to draw Black characters cause i gave her skin highlights but you can barely see them and that's not what actual people look like omgggg.
Also I realize now that her ridiculous proportions (those feet. omg. so long) were a stylistic choice and not a failure on the designers' part to know how young teenagers are proportions. My drawing is clearly stylized as well since that is also not what a young teenager looks like.
Original description:
[she’s flippin off the creators for not knowing how to write girl characters]
I learned there was a Nadia movie and so I watched it, then remembered how much I hate the series so I’ve been thinking to myself how I would have written it differently. I mean I love the soundtrack and I love the worldbuilding (until it got into that weird creationism stuff) and I’m liking Evangelion so far, it’s just... NSBW is so... just terrible? I thought it was going to be Laputa: the series. Instead I got the most sexist anime I’ve ever encountered.
First of all, I redesigned Nadia to actually make her look more sub-saharan African with actual... real features? instead of just some blue-eyed anime girl whose skin has been darkened. I also gave her more practical clothes. I’m disgusted by this “sexy exotic brown girl” shit. Especially for a little girl who’s fourteen! That’s fucked up.
I’d also change a lot about Nadia’s personality. Take out the “obnoxious angry black girl” stereotype, and actually give her skills instead of “ohhh no I’ve lived by myself all my life but all of a sudden a boy shows up and ??? i’m so?? dependent on him??? why must I be so dependent on him?? It’s all my fault!!!” This Nadia retains her skills as an acrobat, and she can still talk to animals, but she’s a little sarcastic about it, like “oh don’t worry guys I’ll talk to Gargoyle. After all only I can communicate with animals.” She’s also a bit of a nerd for science. Not only is her goal to find her birthplace, but she also wants to investigate the technology of the Blue Water gem, which is why she’s protecting it. That’s also why she and Jean become friends, because she sees that he likes engineering and thinks that’s neat. Her other goal is to find her father and punch him, for selling her to the circus. Nadia is still a vegetarian due to her trauma in the circus, but she’s doesn’t try to enforce it on everyone else (WHY did they think that was a good idea??), though demanding that they respect her dietary choices in return. She has a somewhat energetic attitude but it mostly masks her deep insecurities and trauma that is ideally handled way better than how they actually handled it in the series.
Grandis’s personality is no longer “I better find me a man,” she is a flaming lesbian and pursues a romance with Electra (who is also subsaharan African and not a fucking Aryan lady because she’s from fUCKING AFRICA FROM A PRE-COLONIAL CIVILIZATION). Her skills lie in engineering, instead of bathing. You wish I was joking.
Captain Nemo retains his assholery, and gets punched by everyone at least once
Also, I’d take out the lion. Just. Kill him. Eat him. Run him over with a truck. Whatever. I don’t care. Marie doesn’t marry Sanson, because that’s fucking pedophilia. The creationism bs isn’t in the storyline.
The Neo-Atlanteans can stay white people, that’d probably make the most sense and still fit with contemporary dialogue. I actually thought they were really good villains and they were one of the best things about the series, as colonizers who came to Africa masquerading as “the real Atlanteans.” They scared me a shitton and I absolutely loved the twist at the end when Gargoyle realized he had zero Atlantean blood, yet here he was the whole time preaching about how Atlanteans (or at least his idea of what an Atlantean was) was the master race. I mean c’mon they’re obviously the Ku Klux Klan, they got the pointy hats and the racism and shitRelated content

Hm... i do realize that Original anime Nadia looks nothing like an actual African American, but...
I love cute anime girls with dark skin, but no african american facial features... Well... i just don't like those facial features... i dislike big noses big lips, and i HATE CHEEKBONES.
I find it very sad that people dislike Anime Dark Skin girls for not having african-american faces...
I mean, it's Anime. Asian, White, Black people have the similar faces, so what? It looks cute and i appreciate it ^_^
I just prefer sharp faces with sharp features ^_^
No offense, i'm just stating my thoughts... And i say that Nadia anime is fine as it is. I do LOVE Nadia's personality, i love her unstable nature. Grandis is a goddess.
And... um... Why kill King? He's one of the funnest characters in the show, i love him ^_^

That's why, in my opinion, anime is a really limiting style, because more often than not people refuse to draw ethnic features. And if they do, it's over-egaggerated and doesn't seem to fit in with any of the other characters, like the German guy from the Wind Rises. People are proud of their ethnic features and anime isn't great at celebrating those differences.
Really? You like King? I thought he was super annoying.

Um... well, in some animes you can see realistic-looking african people, but still there are some big-eyed african girls.
As for pride... I can see why people would be proud of their ethnic features, but... i just hate the whole idea of Pride.
I dislike when people take something for granted and make a big deal of it, like it's something they made personally.
I mean, ethnic features are not something that humans personally do, the God, Nature, Supernatural Powers, Aliens - they all created this for Humans, humans didn't do it themselves.
And i just hate when people brag about something.
I am Russian, i live in a country with rich culture, and even still, i dislike when my countrymen speek to proudly of themselves.
I just find anger whenever people are proud of anything... i think that Pride is the feature of Egoism.
When people are proud of themselves, it looks like they diminish other people's successes.
I hate when winning person is proud.
Pride if what creates the feeling of Envy in others, and Pride is one of reasons of Hate in the world.
I prefer when people are humble ^_^
And yes, i do love King, especially how he acted in one Island-Arc Episode, where Jean forgot about his first kiss.
One of reasons why i love Secret of the Blue Water is not because of epic story, but because of fun and original funny moments ^_^
I really love this part of Gainax Style, and reminds me a lot of it's current stuff like Kill la Kill, Luluco and Little Witch Academia.

I completely disagree. When people mock ethnic traits, or disregard them because "they simply like sharper features," it's the natural response to make a bigger deal about your ethnic features. It's not a point of bragging. It's a point of saying "you're saying you think my people are ugly, and I'm saying you're wrong." It's reactionary. No one's saying their traits are better than anyone else's. You can't force other people to be humble by telling them they're ugly. That's not doing anyone any favors. That's just making you an asshole.

Uh...
Wait...
When did i say that they are ugly? I do not think that they are ugly, i just personally not fond of REAL face features. ^_^
Why would i force people to be humble by telling them that they are ugly? I think that would be rude... please do not put words into my mouth.
If i want people to be humble i will just say "Please, be humble"
I mean, if person says "Your people are ugly" it's automatically makes him wrong, because it's stupid and rude to call the whole ethnic group as ugly.
If person insults somebody, it automatically makes him rude.
And... wait... Mock Ethnic traits? Um... since when real problems are accustomed to cartoons?
I do not like when people mock other people, but...
The whole point of Humor is to mock somebody for one reason or another.
ANY kind of Joke has a potential to insult somebody. Yet jokes, the REAL jokes, not insults, the REAL jokes are not created with the idea of insulting somebody, they are created with a vision of the author of the joke, of what they deem funny for themselves.
Like, you know, people make fun of my country, Russia, by making these "Soviet Russia" memes and Bear stuff. I realize that's just a humor. It's stereotypical, but it's still a humor. And i am not... um... i try not to be offended by that.
Stereotype is just one of way of portraying humor. There's the style of art called "Caricature", and the whole idea of "Caricature" is to inflate certain aspects of certain social, national or etchnic group.
While i do disapprove racism, and i find it stupid when people hate a race just for not being their race, i still do not mind Caricatures, as it's just the point of the style.
I say, if somebody would insult me over some sterotypes, i would just smile in their face and say "That's what only you think, the truth is still on my side"
I see no reason to be insulted by mere words or imagery. If somebody is not smart enough to use words other than insults, then they are not worth the time. Stupid, rude, racist, sexist people cannot be changed by other people, they can change only by themselves, that's what my mother says. It's pointless to say to a hardcore racist that it's bad to be racist, as they still won't understand that. And that Pride stuff would only fuel their hatred. Instead, he must be either see the positive light of what he hates, or just be ignored, for they can't be changed.
Now when stupid, rude, racist, sexist person resorts to violence, then they should be punished. But if their hatred doesn't exceed the boundaries of vocabulary or imagery, then they can just be ignored.
That's what my mom says "If somebody insults you, just ignore them".
As for stereotypical jokes can hurt very feeble people... then i say people should stop pitying feeble people, and start to help them become strong-willed. If you pity the feeble person, they grow accustomed to pity, and can become people who depend on pity and will become even more feeble. Instead, people should help them to grow as strong-willed people.
I was feeble-willed too, before. I were getting insulted over simple things and cared too much on what other people may think of me.
But now i became more strong-willed, and when i see somebody insulting me over some stereotypical stuff, i can at first calmly explain them why they are wrong, and if they keep being rude to me, i just start to ignore them.
I see it sad, that modern media depends too much of what easily-offended people might think of their work, and it kinda diminished their creative freedom.
Why we can't have a cartoon with caucasian people with african facial features, and african people with asian facial features? Surely, it would be unrealistic, but it would be creative.
Modern cartoons and anime depend too much on realism and realistic problems and stoped being magical and silly. And modern silly humor is just bunch of memes and stupid jokes a-la Uncle Grandpa. I miss shows like "Adventures of Jackie Chan", where the main problem was just "This Evil Dragon Sheng-Du tries to collect all the Talisman" it was simple, and it was taking the viewer away from realistic problems ^_^
In the end of this post, i will just say that offensive is a two-side situation. One is Offending, and Other is Offended. But it can be broken if the other side can just stop being Offended, then the Offending side will just feel ignored and may think about their mistakes. Offended reactions feed the Offending side. This situation is like Childish fight, where offended side says "He started it first". Let's just keep a cool head and be rational.
If humanity wants to evolve to higher beings, they must start on developing themselves, other than thinking too much on developing other people. You cannot build a house while telling others how to build a house.
If you want everyone to be friendly to each other, then start to be friendly to each other yourself ^_^
I may sound naive, but i believe that it's the right way to think ^_^

Oh man! I'm sorry if you thought I was starting a fight. That wasn't my intention. My friends tell me I need to work on my word choice. You probably know by now, I can sound rude without meaning to. Regardless, I'll try to address your concerns.
I think I didn't completely understand what you said the first time, and it looks like my interpretation was wrong. You aren't trying to force people to humble themselves by telling them their traits aren't attractive, or mock ethnic traits.
Even so, I personally don't think it's fair to say that because something is a cartoon, it's ok to stylize to the point of erasing ethnic traits. I have to stress that the style of most anime is reflective of a bigger issue in misrepresenting people of color and other non-white folks. Since people of color in anime are rare enough to begin with, you can kind of understand how frustrating it is how they often don't even look like the people they're supposed to represent.
I also have to put in here that my style of drawing is more realistic than most people's, and I'm biased in that I don't like to draw in too much of a cartoony style, but I've seen black people done well in an anime style. See: Canary from Hunter X Hunter, and any characters from The Boondocks. (Guess deviantart won't let me attach images. Also, watch Hunter X Hunter. It is an AMAZING show.)
I'm glad you think you wouldn't be insulted if someone talked about you using a stereotype, but we also need to consider that not everyone is able to feel that way. I don't think there's anything wrong with people getting insulted or offended. Being offended about things helps us to have conversations about these things, and change for the better as a people.

Oh, okay then, it's fine ^_^
I'm okay with stilization... and i also think that dark-skin anime girls with anime facial features are the cutest ^_^
Like Meredy from Tales of Eternia
vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/as…
Or Cure Soleil from upcoming Twinkle Star Pretty Cure ^_^
vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/pr…
I kinda prefer when facial structures are... um... i don't know the word. It's the same way as the word "Androgynous" when regarding genders, but the word i'm looking for is for races. I prefer when characters in anime are "Androgynous" in terms of race ^_^
Well, i tried to draw in more realistic style before, and i tried many styles out before setting on my current style.
BTW, i also tried to make African-Looking characters. Like in my universe, PowerPuff Girl Bubbles is black.
But then i finally decided to draw in a way i personally would like. So my universe's Bubbles is still black, but has basic anime features... well, except her nose is a little rounder now.
As for being offended, well, it's fine to feel offended, but i just dislike when people start out fights for any reason. When person tries to offend you, it's their bait, and if person is acting very offended, then it's like the bait is taken. It's fine to feel offended, but even then, do not show that you are offended, or else you will act right in the way offensive person wants.
And there are also examples of when people get offended for something that wasn't supposed to offend anyone.
Like Mario in a Sombrero on Super Mario Odyssey cover. Some american people pointed it out that it's racist to Mexicans, but then came Mexicans and said that it doesn't offend them, but it was too late.
I just don't want people to fight over stuff

I think the term you're looking for is "ethnically ambiguous," and you're not the only person I've talked to who likes ethnic ambiguity. With ethnic ambiguity, everyone is able to relate to a character the same amount. I understand why people like it. I just prefer to make my characters more varied, because that's more interesting to me. Also, if someone's background is particularly important to their character (going back to the original conversation, a la Nadia), I feel like it's especially important to accurately represent people of that descent. It's literally part of their story.
Yeah, fighting is never fun.

Your art is beautiful and I wouldn't be at all disappointed if Nadia was given a remake and she was redesigned like this!
That said, I find your criticisms odd. I do appreciate the series hasn't aged well.
Nadia isn't human. She was revealed to be from the planet Atlantis. So it seems a little odd to me to be offended by her not accurately representing a culture she doesn't belong to.
I appreicate this series is has sexism and maybe racism but it was set in the year 1889. People were not equal. We are still not.
i also find Japanese fan service odd. But the series did explain how she got stuck with her circus costume. Her "choice" of clothing was much more reserved.
Beautiful fan art that would be an instant fav if not to the finger at its original creators.
you are talented.

Well in the anime interpretation they explicitly said her character was subsaharan African, so I didn't bother going off of the source of the show's inspiration.

I like it. Her design was poor. I don't think they knew what they were doing and how her design would be interpreted by non-Japanese let alone actual black people. I really like her red and white dress you made. a lot more classy.

Thank you! I read somewhere that Tartessos was near Kenya, so I tried to go for a box braid bob for the hair and a simple Kenya robe design for the outfit. Like... super simple. Kenyan robes can get hella complicated and I wasn't in the mood to draw something so intricate.
