Description Heya,

I can finally post this one!
It's one of 4 paintings that I did for a client from the US. He is an actor named Matthew Ewald and has become a very close friend.
My work on this project began almost 2 years ago! Not many pieces were created during this time, but some of the most time-consuming ones I ever did! It's been sheer fun up to this day.
So far, it's a project in developement, a Sci-Fi/Horror saga called 'The Lost Landers' all written by Matthew.

This painting depicts a key confrontation scene in this tale.

It was meant to resemble New York, I checked some reference to get it all right. Everything except for the ship was painted in PS 7.
Inititally, the ship had a different design but was changed in the process for different reasons.
The new ship design, an alien tech-modified, highly-maneuverable Space Shuttle with the catchy name 'Astronautica' was modelled and rendered before I placed it into the scene.

Also, you should know that this painting is pretty old already. Any resemblance to Cloverfield is coincidental because that film wasn't even released by the time this was done!

So, I hope you enjoy!
Another painting will follow!

Wonderful work, the dragon is amazing! And I daresay dragons always win, and this guy looks far more devastating than the Cloverfield monster!

Ok, whoever told you it's like Cloverfield needs to get shot. Giant monster destroying a city is a very popular and old theme. Plus the thing doesn't look ANYTHING like Cloverfield.

I really love the creature and how you colored it. The whole scene is epic! That thing's also too big to compare with Clover, it could eat him up.

I've got no word in my vocabulary that can properly compliment this piece except for awesome.

Question: With those buildings, how did you go about painting the windows? One by one or did you apply a layer of pattern?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Hideyoshi In reply to archvermin [2008-07-03 09:51:26 +0000 UTC]

a mix of both if I remeber correctly. Some self-made textures were overlaid, tweaked into perspective, then refined.

I hope you don't get grief about Cloverfield over this, in reference to what you said there at the end. I'm always worried about people thinking I've ripped other famous stuff off (despite not knowing about it) when I have an idea that's uncannily similar to something someone else has done before. It's totally weird how that happens sometimes, eh? This is really cool, by the way. The city is fantastic in the level of detail in it, I'd love to see a piece this detailed with 2 monsters fighting or something, now that I've seen this. Yeah, but I really envy your city drawing, I haven't got the... uh, spatial visualization skills to draw locations and settings. -_-;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Hideyoshi In reply to Dieman [2008-06-25 12:30:30 +0000 UTC]

thanks, yea I agree.
There is so much out there already, so many ideas and concepts that it's almost impossible to come up with something totally unique. There is always a resemblance to something that was already done... But most of the time it's unintentional or subconsciously driven...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dieman In reply to Hideyoshi [2008-06-26 08:01:17 +0000 UTC]

totally. I mean, I'll bet I'm going to get people jumping down my throat about their "Death Notes" and "Bleach"... oh well I guess at a certain point you come across said similar material and then from there on write your story away from it. Still, it kinda saps my creative energy when that happens because it's like, "Are my ideas even my own? Do I have new ideas? AM I THE REINCARNATION OF SO-AND-SO!?!?" ..... Well, maybe you don't get anxiety attacks like that lol. Nobody said you have to be crazy to do arts, but they didn't say it wouldn't help

Dieman In reply to Dieman [2008-07-07 09:32:48 +0000 UTC]

I believe it reinforces its' own value, through its' own message. NARCISSISM FTW! SELF-REFERENTIAL WIN! I just kinda made it up...

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

Hideyoshi In reply to Dieman [2008-06-27 13:21:32 +0000 UTC]

strange, it never really bothered me that much. I think it's common sense, that something will always look similar to something else. You simply can't help it, so you try to add your own twist to it.
I like your last quote
