Description Here is another one that I did for the EOW 100.
Howling Forest from Neverending Story.
It's refreshing to try new things and go a little more organic!
But it's pretty hard to maintain proper microcomposition I feel... :/

fun info: there are 3 creatures in this pic...

approx. 3-4h
Stay tuned for more...

Thanks for all the comments etc. on the last one!

Microcomposition's a new one for me - could you elaborate?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Hideyoshi In reply to calebcleveland [2008-12-16 15:54:47 +0000 UTC]

it's about how you arrange and place secondary elements in an image. How branches are dispersed, size of patches of light. You can have good basic composition but if your microcomposition sucks, it can overthrow your whole image especially with chaotic subject matters like forests!
For example, if you have 3 birds sitting on a pole you might wanna have the spaces between them kinda randomly set and thus harmonious. One sitting a little more apart from the other 2. That is microcomposition.
You need to maintain randomness and yet have harmony if you wanna succeed at it.

hey Hideyoshi i dunno if youre open to crits or not... if not just ignore this

Overall... awesome piece and atmosphere. My only concerns are this
1) On the right hand side, the small branch popping out of the tree shaped like a C with another smaller C coming out of it... There is another duplicate 45 degrees down to the left of it which is almost the same shape and size. I just find it slightly distracting and repetative. consider changing the shape of either of those?
2) the second foreground tree on the left hand side has almost 3 duplicate branches all spaced perfectly evenly on the left side of the tree. they all curl up with a branch coming out perfectly half way. It once again just sort of breaks the illusion you have here

Other than that, awesome work, and i cant find the 3rd creature! i see the little humanoid guy and the fairy... but thats it

Hideyoshi In reply to jonWILEY [2008-12-16 15:49:47 +0000 UTC]

thanks a lot! You mentioned some good remarks!
That is exactly what I mean by microcomposition!
Arranging small shapes within an image in a natural way.
Now that you pointed those issues out I can only stare at them, haha.
But I won't bother fixing them. Instead do another forest piece maybe...

3rd creature is a rabbit silhouette on the right.
