Here is a crop of my entry for the latest CHOW...she's supposed to be some japanese gang leader girl
blah, not much to say, took around 5 h I think which is way too long, I know... had to repaint certain areas and tweak around.
The pants are badly painted :/

i know this is going to seem silly, but hey, if i dont ask i will never know, what programe did you use on this piece please ? i am really intrested in digital art, and just starting out , i dont have much knowledge of how to do it or anything, could you give me advice doing it please? and recommend any books and dvds that can also help me plz? i have photoshop cs4 if that helps, thank you, crease x

With the back-lighting of the character she has a wonderfully strong presence in the image.

Bloody Brilliant!
Great atmosphere to this one, the lighting and foggyness work together beautifully.
Only grudge I have is that her leg looks a bit small, even with perspective taken into account.
Either way, this is one of the +favs!

Really nice, but the only thing that seems to stick out here is...
She got a stick leg!! Looky! It tiny!
I know that has to do with perception, and granted that to move from three dimensions to two requires some sacrifice... But that leg there just seems... Stick-like. (At least, the lower half)

Those building feel like they are sitting there and some of the windows have a really nice realism to them for only a few strokes!

While I totally dig everything about this piece, the colors are truly worth noting. Your choice of palette evokes the dirty, polluted, energetic, yet chaotic, nightlife of a city. You can almost hear the horns beeping on the streets below and the rhythmic thumping of a nearby club's bass... the colors make it. I love it.

I've always liked the way you succesfuly mix -free, curved, organic- strokes with more geometric ones, like the buildings! Plus, your lighting effects rule. I think you once said you don't use layer fussion modes, is that true here too?
And sorry, I can't see why the pants are badly painted

I used 2 layers, one for the bg and one for the character this time
If I try big changes, I create a new one and quickly flatten if it works for the image.
The pants fold structure is badly painted and also the light hitting it me thinks...

how did you do the windows? I want to say you took advantage of some kind of motion blur effect but i can't be sure? Do you have a tutorial on how that works?

i blurred the background slightly, yeah. used some photo textures and some self-made ones
