Name: Sylence, formerly known as Manami

Age: 24

Species: Black Banded Cat Shark

Rank: Omega

Length: 12-13 ft long, including human torso

Preferred height: 5'9-5'10, on occasion shorter

Personality: Sylence is very helpful and caring to just about everyone that she meets. She's not really shy unless someone flirts with her. She generally ignores flirting if she believes it is just casual flirting. She understands some males do this to make themselves feel better. She'll play into it slightly, not enough to make the guy think he has a chance, but enough to boost his ego. She is thankful that mostly the males from her former clan did this. She hasn't had many issues with this currently. Why? Because she doesn't talk.

Sylence has become very capable of answering questions without talking. Although she is perfectly able to speak, if there is a question that she cannot answer without words, she tends to just swim away. That’s not to say that you can’t get her to talk at all, she just doesn’t see the point in actually speaking. When she does speak, her voice is very quiet after years of little to no use.

History: When she was born, Sylence was given the name Manami. Manami was born to one of the top fighters in her clan. Both her mother and father were amazing hunters, and expected their children to be as well. She learned how to fight up until she was around 13-14. Around then Manami decided she liked having longer hair, her family decided for her that she would help raise the children instead of fight. Long hair would just get in the way. She had no problem with this. She spent a year shadowing the others that took care of the children before she was allowed to be alone for long periods of time as the caretaker.

One day when she was 17 and just relaxing off on her own in some rocky water, some fishing boats drifted by. Their long nets mixed with all the rocks made it difficult for her to get by. As a result, her right arm got caught. Manami struggled desperately to get free, but ended up getting her arm wedged between some rocks. The human fishermen tried to tug their net free, causing her arm to be badly broken at the shoulder. They tugged harder, finally severing her arm from her body.

Some of the adults happened to be nearby, and were quick to aggression. She tried calling out to them, trying to explain that it was an accident. They didn't listen. Her parents soon arrived at the smell of her blood. She once again tried to get their attention, wanting so bad to explain that this was all a misunderstanding. They didn't listen, either. She was soon witness to a very bloody event.

A few members of her clan were killed, and many humans died as well, her father among the dead. Her mother didn't blame Manami for what happened, but she grew quite cold. Her two older brothers, however, did blame her. They kept demanding to know why she didn't explain what happened before people were killed. She desperately tried to explain to them, but her brothers would not listen. With everything that happened, she just gave up. Manami refused to speak any more.

This distressed her mother, but it didn't prevent her from babysitting the children. For the next few years she remained with her clan, the animosity from her brothers getting to her. One day when she was 23 her mother pulled her aside. She told her that there was only so much hatred one person could take. She said, "I love you, Manami, and I want what's best for you. There is a place, quite far from here, called Siyyon. There you can have a fresh start, away from this...this...unjustified anger."

With that Manami swam towards where her mother told her to go. She got lost a few times, but managed to eventually find her way. The area seemed nice, like her mother told her. The waters were very nice, and the other taurs seemed friendly. It was around this time she decided no longer to go by the name "Manami." Since she didn't talk, something that was a play off of that seemed to fit better. This is where she got the idea of "Sylence." It made her smile, and that's what is important, at least to her.

She arrived in Siyyon two months before she turned 24.

She is a black banded cat shark, which I found out is also called a brown banded bamboo shark. When I used the picker from a picture of one of these cute creatures, the color was in the purple spectrum. Since I wanted her to be mostly purple, this fit.

At the same time, I'm realizing I have quite the talent for making depressing back stories for my characters. It's after that I try to figure out how they cope with things like that. I dunno. I guess it's because I'm more sympathetic towards characters that have overcome such great tragedies that I want my characters to invoke such sympathy as well.

Either way, I'm happy with how she turned out. I think her eyes are really pretty against her skin.
