Description 14” x 17” Watercolour (so had to scan four times and then put together using paint shop pro.)
FULL VIEW!

Well, I was watching this History channel special about Satan and just up and decided to draw him.

I just have to tell you what all went through my head in painting this, because I really read up on Satan before painting this and put alot of thought and time into it:

Satan was once an angel but then rebelled against God and was thrown into the depths of Hell, where Satan said that they (he and the other rebel angels) would rule.

I picture that when thrown into hell his wings would be torn to shreds (can't get back to heaven without wings.)
I made him sort of asexual, because aren't angels all sort of girly and weird? (Am I right, folks?! Hell yeah!)
He has armour because he was one of those fighting sorts, and has the spear because rulers in their portraits tend to have some symbol of power, like a staff or crown, and I figured in hell he would need something functional (and destructive, not stupid like a sceptre.)

I thought he'd be almost pretty (an angel, hello! Not some weird little devil horned thing like those medieval priest made up to scare people into going to church) but have something almost sinisterly weird about him. Also, he'd have to be a inspirational leader to those rebel angels as why else would a third of them go with him in rebelling against God?

Hell is described as being like a lake: ever changing and unstable. I wanted to instil that sense of unease as well as a sort of post apocalyptic look.

My hell would be trapped inside a body, and unable to communicate at all, and just be like that creepy guy in that movie seven who looked dead but wasn't, so I drew Satan standing on top of these almost mummy like people (mummy-like in that they are dried out and shrunken like beef jerky.) Those two demon things were once angels. I figure only Satan really stayed somewhat angel like in appearance.

I have a challenge for you! I have this idea of Satan and I'd like for you to see if you can draw it. He wouldn't have eyes. They would be these pitch black sockets instead, showing the depths of his wisdom. His face would be decaying a bit; philosophers tend to be between life and death as it is, and so should he. He would be old. Ancient even, but very alive. (Big scruffy beard?) A glass blade, for clarity, being see-through. And reflective. He would feel old, wise, reflective. That he'd be a quiet yet wrathful spirit.

Your logic is just... ah. Wonderful.

I'd like to see you draw a Jesus.. Because you see people draw him with that long hair, and the skinniness. But everyone has an interpretation. It'd just be interesting to see what you could come up with.

Great job, I love it.

Beautiful- in it's own way. He looks forsaken- just as he should. I fully agree with ~Tall-Hobbit. It just gives you the creeps.

Now for the color work. I love it- Dark, feeling, neutral colors. This is a definate WOW!!!

When I look at this, I feel.. strange. I'm certain everyone has experienced it in their life time.
When your stomach feels slightly ill, disgusted, and you just get this sensation.. like somethings just.. wrong? Your not really afraid, but you feel uneasy, unstable. And you feel that something's just... Bad? Like it just... shouldn't be there? It's not right?

My mother says that such a feeling is your soul. Your soul is offended by what it sees. It's not right with God, and your soul is telling you that you should have nothing to do with it.

Please don't be offended, I'm not attempting to insult you or your work. Honestly I'm not. If you hadn't put so much effort, detail, colour, and feel into this, it would not have such an affect on all who see it.

Not offended in the least. You SHOULD feel ill at ease if I did my job right.

I'm glad it evoked such a response. Many pictures of the Devil are too comfortable, in my opinion.

nice work, but his face is a bit...hm, how should i call it.."childish" and the background is too bright...a bit more dark would have been better, but how i said, nice work at all...

Very dark but still slightly beautiful--I love the description you included, that's a nice insight into the whole picture. The History Channel is chock full of inspiration, isn't it?

Dearie, your theology is nearly impeccable. I for one believe that Satan is still beautiful, despite his fallen state. In the Bible, it says that he "comes as an angel of light." How else would he be able to tempt if he weren't able to make wrong things seem so right?

Well this seems to really define his personality. He still has some beauty in his face so he still looks like he could have been an angel. I like the dark and morbid feel to this drawing. It really gives you the creeps and seems to be a real accurate picture of his evil. The dark colors really fit the mood well and I love how well you did the shading on this...great job on the coloring as well.
