I actually use coloured wool :> You wrap it around and felt it into the base shape.

There are so many other things I want to do too... I like to draw but now I want to make needlefelts, and cosplays, and oragami, and stuff out of ducktape, and papercrafts, and custom my little ponies, and so many other things 0_0

Haha, I know the feeling! :> It's like artist ADHD, I swear. Right now I'm torn between writing, drawing, painting, felting, working on my BJDs, sewing, sculpting...the list goes on, haha. That's why I got my degree in Studio Art--I got to do a little bit of everything. <3

So, what tools do you use and what wool do your suggest? :3

I use the basics; a "coarse" felting needle, a black dense foam block (similar to the foam packaging electronics come in), and sometimes a multi-needle tool.(mine has five small needles).

I use Canadian merino for my base dolls, which felts up a bit spongy and smooth. It's pretty nice, I was using something much more wirey before. One way to decide what you like to work with is to see if your supplier has a sample pack of different fibres. That way you can get a feel for what you like without shelling out a ton of money! For colours I'm using mostly Ashford Corriedale right now, which is completely gorgeous. Smooth but not slippery, felts like a dream, true colours...it's pretty much the best there is <3

I order in my supplies from Rose Haven farm [link] (they're pretty close to where I live so the shipping is lightening-fast, and they have an amazing selection!) but you'll probably want to find somewhere local to you. :3 Hope that helps!

Oh gosh these are just precious and really neat!! I'd love to try this but i have a question, when you're felting on the shirt and shoes etc. do you continue to use the foam block or is the body structure enough to stab the needle through/felt the clothing on?

aaaah sorry for answering this so late >.< busy busy week! I use the block while I'm adding colour for safety reasons, but you probably could work without one on most of it. It's mostly just to protect your lap and hands, the needles are really sharp! Hope that helps!

Hehe, thanks! You should try it, it`s pretty easy and a lot of fun. Also smuppets, haha, I`d love to see them if you have any pictures!

[link] i was not lying about the smuppet >___>; he sits on my computer screen and watches me, along with a Duttle i accidentally also brought to life.

Okay that is awesome and I love it. Look at that plush rump jutting out all impudently! Is the Duttle as disturbing as I imagine it would be? I kind of wanted to make one, but I`d probably just end up putting down the needle and backing away slowly

kitkatty In reply to hiltti [2011-12-04 18:15:18 +0000 UTC]

ahahaha i think the duttle could most definitely be more disturbing, it was really just my attempt at a squiddle that ended up creeped me out. I was thinking of actually making a true duttle instead of a fail!squiddle, because i apparently have a fascination with crafting things that disturb me.
