Description

Another illustration for a short story written by my friend

This chapter picks up where the last one left off - so Hannah has returned after a day of absence and her father deemed it to be a gryphon’s fault. Believing Kaern has a bad influence on his daughter, the old man threatens to banish him.

Time went by since then, but poor bird stayed frozen as a stone postament. His riding harness is still tightened way past uncomfortable, but now it is the least of his burdens. Nicole - who saw the whole confrontation from afar - decides to come over and cheer the bird up. Kaern helps the young man to free him from the saddle and harness, but stays mostly submerged in his thoughts.

He tells Nicole that when Hannah saved him from the captivity, gryphon found her to be a fledgeling just like him and pledged to help her whatever way he could. Hannah was quite lonely back then, so he made her company. This has bolstered her resolve and confidence but made her grow openly disobedient towards the father. Kaern tried his hardest to mediate the conflicts, yet this was met with misunderstanding from both parties - Hannah saw betrayal when he sided with her father, while the old man just put the gryphon to blame no matter what.

Kaern assumes it would be better for everyone if he were to leave, and may give a chance for the family to reunite.

Nicole is having none of that. He points out that Hannah would feel incredibly lonely here without him (and trust me, young lad knows exactly how much).  Kaern argues that leaving now would be better in the long term, though he would also miss Hannah a lot. Nicole doesn’t give up trying to convince gryphon to stay a loyal friend. To his surprise, the more gryphon thinks about Hannah, the more inclined he becomes to stay. It ends with them deciding to wait for Hannah to think a way out together

The gryphon is noticeably relieved when finally decides to stay, and points out to Nicole how he (the young man) has changed since the day he arrived. Before, he would seemingly only think about himself, and now he just spent a good chunk of hour trying to make things better for others.

As usual, I'm going to post the original text in a comment below . Sadly, it is untranslated, but it's there if you wish to immerse yourself in the story.
