Description Is this really a tutorial? Or is it humor? A little bit of both, I suppose . . . in the tutorial section because it has more of a "how to" feel. :B

A lot of people, sometimes sarcastically, say that the best way to get popular on DA is to draw Naruto fanart, or tons of babes, or kawaii neko-chans.

To this I say: BAH!

For if drawing average-to-excellent Naruto fanart, babes, and kawaii neko-chans were truly the path to internet success, then quite a few artists out there would be much more famous than they are now.

No, my friends, the secret to getting noticed is this: GET PEOPLE TO NOTICE YOU!

For quite some time my account sat here with little more than the occasional offsite buddy (Y'all know who you are.) dropping by. And that was cool! But kind of lonely.

Then, once I started linking back to my things on other sites? BOOM! A relative flood of new watchers and friends.

So my advice to you is this: Get your art out there! "If you build it, they will come" does not apply to the internet.

Is there a fandom you draw a large amount of fanart of? Join a forum or community devoted to it, and post links to your work! Or track down the "art postings" section of a more general forum, and link to things there!

And don't forget to dabble in some on-DA exposure, too. Pop into the Thumbshare forum every once in a while, and see what threads are relevant to your work. Join a club on DA, and submit some art to that!

But most importantly, stick with your pals. John Q. "Kewl Pics" may favebomb your gallery, but the people who leave interesting and helpful comments are the ones who'll stick around for your next update. They make much better conversation, too. ;]

You, my dear artist, are simply amazing.
Just for this, I wish to have your children. But not really. Perhaps just imaginary children.

Your comments as well as your image have put the biggest smile on my face. (:

Imaginary children sounds like a safe bet to me! x[)

I'm glad you like it. :]

Imaginary children are the best. You can beat them an nobody would know-- That was just mean. I'm sorry.

Absolutely true. That's why you must work hard, and tell people to go look at your art!

And uploading at least once a day doesn't hurt either. P:

HinoNeko In reply to Koshua [2009-07-16 23:18:14 +0000 UTC]

Haha! Yeah, being frequent is also a good idea! Nobody's gonna bother with somebody who only updates once a month, unless their art is superfantabulous. ;]

And TAKES a month to finish. Haha. Procrastination isn't highly looked upon either. ;___;

Me too, I haven't worked on ANY art today ;___; So I'm just now starting on theme 5 of my list.

"Dreams" Why is it I have NO problem with the depressing themes, and yet the somewhat happy ones destroy me?

HinoNeko In reply to Koshua [2009-07-16 23:49:17 +0000 UTC]

*shrug*

I only ever completed, like, one of the themes on one of those things and then ave up. x[)

I've found that things that are in the 'humor' category are also very popular... At least, that's what I look for anyways, and people always like to laugh!

HinoNeko In reply to MercysUnmercifulFire [2009-07-03 04:10:50 +0000 UTC]

Yup! I'd say I've noticed a bit of that, as well! Laughter is wonderful. :]

Laughter IS supposed to be the best medicine, though I am doubtful about that, once, after a particularly harsh laughing fit of mine... I got a headache... But I didn't feel like I was gonna be sick anymore... *It was the day before a concert I was in*

This is so true. However, what if you're like me and horridly shy about going up to someone (on the internet or otherwise) and asking them to look at your art?

It makes me feel like I'm shoving my so-called art down people's throats. And that makes me feel bad and scared, especially since I'm afraid of people pointing at my work and screaming "GENERIC ANIME BULLSHIT!"
Yeah... > >;

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

HinoNeko In reply to Whatura [2009-03-06 02:25:51 +0000 UTC]

Hm . . . well, there's always clubs! There's fanclubs for just about any show or game out there on DA. If you do a lot of fanart for a certain series, you could always join one of those and submit art to there.

Or if you're on another site that has clubs/communities, like LiveJournal, you could join one there and post links to relevant pictures!

That way, it's less like "Hey, lookit my stuff!" and more like "I drew a picture of _____, if anyone wants to check it out." :]

I think an aggravating aspect about dA is that you have to really get around if you want people to notice you.

1. Take a picture of a breast, ass or labia
2. Up the contrast on photoshop
3. Title it 'The Persistence of Memory'
4. Put a period for your artist's comment
5. ???
6. Profit

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

HinoNeko In reply to missgreeney [2009-01-15 20:37:21 +0000 UTC]

...Isn't there kind of a certain danger to posting original art though?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

HinoNeko In reply to Kelliestar [2009-01-01 21:30:31 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but it's fun danger.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Kelliestar In reply to HinoNeko [2009-01-01 21:35:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but isn't it more likely to be stolen? I've been wanting to put my original stuff up, but people always tell me that.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

HinoNeko In reply to Kelliestar [2009-01-01 21:50:18 +0000 UTC]

Mm? Nah. I've seen plenty of stolen fanart, too . . . and while art theft is a lot more common than one would want it to be, it's still pretty rare.

If you want to be extra safe, you could always add a light watermark or your signature to your pictures. It won't necessarily prevent theft, but it will make it much easier for people to track down the originals. :]
