Thank you.

I decided to leave it as it is, without a precise background, because sometimes too many colors make only a chaos, where you miss the main meaining of the scene.

Awww, so sad. Kathy was my favorite character from the 80's series. She just appealed to me.

I loved her too: when I was 8 and I saw the 1980 series for the first time, and when I watched the series again, few years ago.
I forgot her, to tell you the truth, and she never appears again. But she was cool, yes.
"Once there was another person who treated me well..." says Atom, moments before sleep. It's so sad he does not remember anything before Hamegg kidnapped him. Kathie is like a mom, or an older sister. It's a shame she never appears again; she could be a great cameo in the 2003 series.

The Italian translation gave her the name Cassie, but I think it's a matter of transliteration.

Yes! It was so sad and so sweet! One thing I like about Kathy is that we share the same name. Well, Kathy is most likely short for Kathryn, which is my name, though I go by Katie.

It's cool, you've got the same name; for me, instead, it would be very hard. Once, in the old series of "Sailor Moon", the Italian version changed the name of the main character: Sailor Warriors saved her, and she was middle-age; she never got married, as she was a writer and her beloved a great musician: both ran after their carreers. Then, at the end of the episode, they meet again, and run to marry each other.
Her Japanese name was replaced with Marcella.
It gave me the creeps, to tell you the truth.

In 1980s series, Atom's memory is a mystery: in Circus's time, his memory is damaged or half erased by Hamegg. Then, when he's free again, he seems not able to remember before that period. But in some advanced episodes, he himself tells Uran that Jump was Tobio's dog. So he knows who Tobio was, and he knows who his father was. It's odd that he never asks where Tenma is. They just tell us he's disappeared. So, is he dead, like Jetter Mars's father? Or he's hiding somewhere, far away fromeverything, like an hermit? We don't know, Atom seems to not care about it... and he never talk about Kathie again; maybe they won't be able to meet, because of Hamegg, but, well, they could keep in touch; even if there were no internet, maybe there were some cool technology they could use to send some letters and to not skip the cover.

It's a thing all old cartoons have: people promised "I will visit you again!" but it never happened. And characters, even great ones, were totally forgotten.

Circuses are just about always cruel and unnatural. The animals hate being in them. Once they're freed, their reactions are priceless.Β

And, in this story, we're not talking about animals, but about Artificial Intelligences, that may be ever worse, on a certain point of view.

I am not against circus and I love animals, even when they do some good tricks, but I also know that some methods of training are totally cruel, and I hate when they dress them as humans, or teach them to smoke or drink. Animals must work and take a rest, as humans do.

And, in this case, the ringmaster has to treat well his robots as well. We know how Hamegg uses to treat his workers; I bet he treats bad even human ones.

In the 1980 series we know what could happen to maltreated robots: the robot-elephants gone mad, and poor Tornado could not calculate his jump, and died.

Not mentioning how much dangerous this show can be for the viewers.

Hitler did not wanted Jews work for him, he wanted to exterminate them, and making them work until death was the best to reach his goal; Hamegg, instead, seems to hate his very source of wealth, fame and work. He hates robots, but he's also stupid, as he maltreats them. Maybe he considers his robots easy to be replaced, so, one or another makes no difference. But Atom is not a machine made in series, he's unique, and he is in many ways. Hamegg does not see it, does not see over his own nose, and the only thing he wants is a fast bargain. He kicks and pushes his robots to gain the crumbs, while he could gain more and better, only treating his workers a bit humanly.
Even poor Tornado, or other robots, even the animal ones, weren't just simple machines. To save money, batteries and mantainance, he lost his best stars, while he could have the brightest robot circus in the world, if only he spent some money for his workers's health.

Hamegg was was definitely a cheap-ass. Being the greatest circus in the world would probably have made him more money than he saved on costs.Β

Yep, this version of the story is really sad, a real hell for poor Atom.
He's still very young, as he's been activated not much time ago (in the 1963s version, some years passed; in the 1980s, it is not clear; I imagined an average of the two data, and the result is Atom is always too young for this).

Hamegg is telling him is time to go on stage again: maybe it's the 1963s circus, where he's called to fight; maybe is 1980s circus, where he's called to play the clown and maybe to replace poor Tornado. I did not made a choice, as both situations are not a party for out tiny robot.
But as there's Kathie (the circus girl from the 1980s series) he is not toally alone. She can do some repairs, and, above all, she treats him well, as she reckognises he's far more than a soul-less machine.

I watched that episode. Poor him. But glad there's Kathie and she acted like a protector. Even helped him out of that circus and brought him to Ochanomizu directly.Β

Yes, she had faith in him, she gave him confidence, she helped him in training. And she talked with him. This must be really important, as Atom, first of all, thinks he's good at nothing; his memory is gone, all he does at the circus is a mistake, and Hamegg threatens to turn him in a monkey... he's not made to be a circus-robot, but he also has no memory of what happened before.

It's not clear how happened he almost lost all his memories, and it's not clear as well when he recovers a bit of them. But when Kathie talks to him, gently stroking his cheek, he seems to find a piece of his old life: another one was gentle with him before...
This is really heartbreaking!

For a moment I thought there was something wrong with this. ^_^'

As Atom he's been activated not much time ago, he's to be considered very young (in the 1963s version, some years passed; in the 1980s, it is not clear; I imagined an average of the two dates).
Hamegg is telling him is time to go on stage again: maybe it's the 1963s circus, where he's called to fight; maybe is 1980s circus, where he's called to play the clown and maybe to replace poor Tornado. Maybe a mix of both. I did not made a choice, as both situations are not fun for our tiny robot.
But as there's Kathie, who can support him, and can give him some good repair. I suppose there were a team of scientists behind Hamegg and the robot circus, for the major stars. And Atom IS the star of the circus. But, unluckily, this does not mean he or other attactions are treated well. Kathie does her best for him, as she knows he's not only a soul-less machine.
We don't know anything about poor Tornado, but he was very smart as well. Maybe Kathie and Tornado were friends as well, but she was forbidden to help him... this is another point I sholuld clear, if I go on with this version of the story.

Tornado is mentioned inΒ the story I'm working on, but Kathy never knew him. Atom did, though. They were friends, but one day Tornado was missing, and Hamegg never told Atom why. Later one day, Atom finds out that Tornado was in fact scrapped by Hamegg and thrown into the broken robot trash dump because he was broken. Hamegg points out to Atom that if he disobeys him, one day he will end up the same way. Hamegg then leaves Atom to cry alone in the rubbish dump, next to Tornado's...er, body parts.

Atom doesn't tell Kathy about this.

This reminds me about Disney's Pinocchio, which takes almost literally from the original Italian story. In the Disney's cartoon, Pinocchio sees clearly his own destiny, when he sees another puppet thrown among firewood, with an axe in its chest.
In the original story, Pinocchio begs Mangiafuoco to not use his brothers and sister to rekindle the fire, and the enormous man gives it up: he'll eat his meal without cooking it, sparing the life of Pierrot, and, plus, gives Pinocchio some gold coins. Money he is supposed to use for his father Geppetto.

Here, the story is more or less the same.

Maybe you don't want to reveal more details here, about your story. You know I've never been thinking about any version of it, I just had an idea about Hamegg touching Atom's shoulder as another show is up to start.

Usually, I like to use my own character, Fortuna. But if there's already Kathy, she'd be superfluous, a bit redundant. As a flying girl, she could help Atom and other robots to a rapid runaway. She's not a robot, she's not some rules in her own program. There could be another version of the story, totally different.
But I bet that Kathy and Fortuna could be friends.

Tornado and Daichi / Atlas both act as older-brother figures in my story, but both died terribly; Tornado was killed by Hamegg, and Daichi is a good character in my story and not a villain - he was a robots rights activist, but a bunch of angry humans framed him for a crime he didn't do and Daichi eventually was executed.Β I think I'll tell you the details in my next Note. Don't want to give away too much of my story plans where everyone can see, as you mentioned. Ha ha.

I think Fortuna and Kathy would be good friends. Maybe we ought to write a story about them meeting sometime. They're both kind characters, a bit lonely, both getting along well with Atom. Yes, I would love to see them interact.

Well, Fortuna has got a strange behaviour: used to be lonely, she has her head always on something, so she seems to be distracted... If she was at the circus, her story could be complicated. She knows she can fly, where Atom leanrs only later (he does not remember he already learned to fly and to use his lasers). What could stop her to take off, and to take some friends (human and robot) with her?
She is meant to have no bond, so there's nothing Hamegg or someone else could use as hostage to blackmail her.
Atom's friendship is an exception, of course. But in this version, he's the weak side, and I don't know if she would do the first step.
As there's already Kathy, I don't know how Fortuna could be the third in their friendship; it may take time, as she does not trust people (human or robot) so easily.
And why should she be at the circus, as she is not a robot and she's not a technician?
I'm a fraid she would be totally out of place...

Daichi/Altas as an activist and a positive character is a great idea, of course. So he is still a powerful robot, who can change his own shape and who's made by Tenma. Executed? This is creepy, and sad. I imagined many times how a robot execution could be like; I imagined the crude scenes of "The Green Mile", and in place of the human prisoner, there's the bad robot. Maybe out of energy, so he can't defend and can't run away, but still conscious and present... AI robot or human, this always gives me the creeps.

Well, in my story before Atom came to Hamegg's Circus, he used to work in a factory workshop for Lamp, who was Atom's second owner - before Hamegg but after Tenma. Maybe in a story where both Fortuna and Kathy existed, Fortuna befriended Atom before he even met Kathy, at Lamp's place. It would be good for Atom to have friends like Tornado and Fortuna before Kathy came to be with him.

Atom isn't created by Tenma in my version, and he can't change his own shape. He's always in ''Daichi'' mode and has no armor mode in my story. He was created by Dr. Walpurgis (the evil scientist from the 1980 series) for Skunk to be a thief-helper robot, but Daichi ran away and Livian (a human woman in my story) found him and took him in. And yes, Daichi ends up executed in my story, sadly. Livian and Ochanomizu, and of course Kathy and Atom try to save him, but Tawashi says that the law is the law, and Daichi gets chopped up into a million pieces by this robot-executing machine alive. Poor thing. Ah well, my story has a bit of a dark tone, I guess. But I'll make sure Kathy and Atom have some fun and some heartwarming scenes together to lighten up the story tone a bit.

Poor Atlas. This is very sad.

I remember doctor Walpurgis, and his Italian voice was really creepy. The dubber's name is Mario Bardella. He's dead in 2014, but you can hear a clip, from the movie "The Scarlet Letter". He's playing an Inquisitor, he is asking questions to a woman (woman, in Italian, is DONNA), who is pregnant outside of marriage (the kid is called "BASTARDO", that in English is "bastard"; PADRE means "father"). This voice fits perfectly on Walpurgis, even, to tell you the truth, in my opinion that character was not so great. They should deepen it a bit.

www.antoniogenna.net/doppiaggi… <- Mario Bardella's voice - clip

Fortuna is a fugitive. She is meant to be stuck in the laboratory where scientists created her; as a failed experiment, she's not meant to be outside and show their failure all around the world. But many times she finds a way to escape. If that place at Lamp's could give her some cover, maybe she could be there too. And, of course, sooner or later, they could be friends with Atom, of course, as he is very sweet, different from all others.
Maybe at the Circus the problem could be he is the star, so he's always under the attentive control of Hamegg and maybe some of his cronies. This could make difficult to be safe with him...

Walpurgis is named Johan L. Walpurgis in my story, named after the main villain from Naoki Urasawa's ''Monster'', Johan Liebert. He is Tenma's rival in robotics; Tenma hates him because the government praises his inventions while they dismiss Tenma as a dangerous crackpot. Walpurgis is a cruel, mean scientist who invents stuff mainly for the money and treated Atlas very badly, creating his complex electronic brain and presenting to the public to get a prize, and then putting that very same electronic brain into a robot body looking like a human teenage boy in order to sell the whole ''completed project'' to Skunk's gang so the criminals can use Atlas as a thief. In my story, Atlas is a Composite Character with Denkou, the robot who could turn invisible; here their roles are combined into one. Atlas can turn invisible in the story (but it drains him of a lot of energy), so Skunk uses him to steal treasures that are heavily guarded. Atlas of course ends up running away. He meets Livian, who renames him Daichi and gives him a home in her shop. He becomes her apprentice, and runs errands for her on his motorbike. Livian also asked Dr. Ochanomizu to create a new body for Daichi so Skunk and Walpurgis cannot recognize him and capture him. So Atlas was originally created to look about 12, but Ochanomizu gave him a grownup body so as ''Daichi'' he looked around 18 or 19. My version of Atlas is kind of a combination between his 1980 and 2003 selves.

Lamp takes in all kinds of people to work in his factory, so Fortuna could easily find a job there. Lamp would likely exploit her though, knowing him, probably not giving her the wages she deserves or just being plain mean to her sometimes. Lamp is not a kind boss. Like Hamegg, he is an egocentric, tyrannical bully. Atom would probably make friends with some of the kinder workers, including Fortuna,Β and he'd be in a very close friendship with her, but perhaps one day Fortuna is forced to leave and Atom is alone again, leading him toΒ run away one day back to Tenma's. But we all know what happens next...Β

I see... did you hear his voice? What do you think about it?

Your version of Atlas's story is pretty cool, indeed. So, this time Walpurgis did not steal Tenma's blueprints and projects.
I saw how world of scientists treated bad Tenma in the main episodes of the cominc by Akira Himekawa: there we see the precise moment when he loses his grip, starts to maltreat Tobio and becomes darker and darker.

Well, if the place is good to hide and to not be found by her chasers, Fortuna would be Ok... but when he will discover that she is not a common girl, and some people would pay him for some good informations, well, she would run away again. But, until she's under cover, she's Ok, even being underpayed. She's used to live as a clochard, when she does not find anything, so a job and a shelter is always a good choice, better than living that way. And if she can find some real friends, it would be even better. If she was forced to leave, of course, she would suffer about it, but she thinks it's better to anyone she's away. They told her she would not be like she is, so she should not be HERE at all, so even if she loves people she meets, she thinks they are safer if she's not around.
Knowing a tiny and graceful robot-boy or a strange girl does not mean they share their secrets.

In my own story, instead, they don't need to hide anything, as he's been told to chase and catch her: they play "cards on" from the beginning.

I've got lot of different endings about that version where Atom tries tor return home, running away from the Circus. But if he runs away together with Fortuna, this means they share their destiny, she won't leave him, until he finds a place to stay; maybe they could stay together, but she's always with a step out of he door. If she runs away alone, instead, she would be forced to leave him and all other people she knows, in order to not put them in danger.
