Description For
Audition: [link]

I also submitted a profile and audition for Ofelia , so I'll leave it up to the judges to decide who gets in.

Because my subconscious apparently believes that I need something to keep me busy (hah!) once TBOS is over.

Cheryl's supposed to be one of those looks-older-than-her-age type of girls, but she ended up looking a bit too old here. This is pretty much how I draw her as an adult. Note to self: relearn how to draw kids.

Right, and texture is from `hibbary .

Name: Cheryl Lao
Age: 15
Gender: Female
District: 4
Height: 5’6”
Weight: 130 lbs
Weapons/Skills: Trained as a Career Tribute; has a fairly broad knowledge of weapons as a result. Skilled with spear (specifically su yari). Familiar with rope dart. Extensive knowledge of fishing techniques from growing up and working in District 4. Strong swimmer. Is not averse to using the environment to her advantage. Can get by on little sleep.
Token: A wide jade bracelet carved with bas relief, given to her by her parents

Appearance:
Cheryl’s appearance is not much out of the ordinary—long dark hair, brown ochre complexion, grey eyes. Her heritage is as mixed as her appearance suggests, and though she can’t keep track of all of it she’s quite sure she has some Asian Pacific and Inuit somewhere in her ancestry.

Due to the nature of her work and her recent training, she’s put on a fair bit of muscle. Her posture is confident but not rigid; her expression usually projects a laid-back air. She’s conscious about maintaining a presentable appearance.

Personality:
In general, Cheryl is easygoing, even-tempered, and by most accounts likeable. She’s naturally friendly, good at small talk, and occasionally even charismatic. Most of the people who know her would describe her as mellow. Had she been living in another time or place, she might have been described as lazy, but life in the districts does not allow that sort of luxury. She does what she needs to get by, but she won’t do more than she is asked unless given a convincing reason. Consequently, she tends to be the type that shows promise but rarely excels.

She puts effort into maintaining her physical appearance, half of which is spent making it look effortless. Cheryl knows vanity finds few sympathizers, so she does her best to hide hers. She isn’t unwilling to get her hands dirty when it’s unavoidable, but you can bet she will scrub them clean as soon as she gets the chance.

Perhaps as a result of all the distrust and subterfuge during the war, she’s highly practiced in the indispensible art of talking her way out of sticky situations. While she prefers not to be the oily smooth-talker type, she’s more than willing to pull that if it puts her at an advantage or gets her out of trouble. She’s often concerned about her reputation, especially among her family and close friends, and does her best not to disappoint them.

History:
Life was kind to Cheryl and her family before the war. They lived a comfortable middle-class life in District Four. Her mother held a respected position in the government, and her father ran a small but successful fishing business. From a young age, Cheryl and her brother Kay spent time on the water, learning their district’s trade. Cheryl’s older brother was something of a mentor figure to her; despite his aloof attitude and his tendency to overshadow her, she learned from his example and looked up to him.

When the war broke out, her parents adamantly refused to take part in the fighting and likewise forbade their children from taking part. This did not dissuade Kay from finding someone who could teach him combat skills. On occasion, he would drag Cheryl along to training, but she was not particularly enthusiastic about it.

It wasn’t long before her brother packed up, hid all his belongings, and ran off to join the fighting. Her parents were crushed, and though they were obviously worried about their son, Cheryl knew they were, above all, disappointed. For her part, Cheryl kept a low profile and kept her distance from the fighting. She tried to keep track of her brother, though she couldn’t do much better than combing through rumors. Some of them indicated that Kay was climbing the rebel ranks, but Cheryl could never be sure.

The rebellion began to crumble. The rumors turned hushed, more fearful, talking of an impending invasion by Capitol forces. When it finally happened, the Lao house was one of those that were raided by the Peacekeepers. They tore it apart from roof to ground for any sign of incriminating evidence but found none. While lack of evidence was not usually enough to prevent the Peacekeepers from dragging people away, Cheryl’s family narrowly avoided that fate thanks to Mrs. Lao’s influence in the government.

Still, the Peacekeepers kept the Laos kept under constant surveillance. They couldn’t hide their relationship to a rebel—the records were all there—and no matter how Cheryl’s parents denounced and condemned their son’s actions the Peacekeepers would not stop harassing them. Her mother lost her job, and her father’s business collapsed as his employees left. By the time the war was over, the Laos were struggling to keep themselves afloat.

Afterwards, the Peacekeepers lifted their security measures, though they still paid regular visits to her home. Most of the other citizens avoided them—they did not want to be associated with anyone who attracted trouble. Cheryl never confirmed whether Kay was dead or captured. Her parents had ceased to care; they would have disowned him had there been any point. Although her parents had never explicitly forbidden her to speak of her brother, Cheryl knew better than to ever bring him up. They blamed him for the state they were in, and by this point even Cheryl harbored some resentment against him.

Shortly after the Hunger Games were announced, Cheryl signed up for training with her parents’ tacit approval. During the few years the Capitol took to prepare the arena and finalize the details, Cheryl prepared for the Games.

You have an awesome OC there! And nice drawings of her too!
Do you think that yours and mine OC could make an alliance if they are both picked out?

Thank you!

I'm going to hold off on alliances until the OCT actually starts. We don't know who's matched against whom, so I don't want to get ahead of myself here.

Cheryl looks quite pretty. I love her personality and background story.

I'm sorry if this is an awkward question, but if both selected can are characters be allies? she's a District 2 female, maybe they could have a career alliance? here's her profile..awkward

Ahh, thank you!

Hm, I'm not sure about alliances. I know a lot of people are forming them already, but to be perfectly honest, I don't know how that's going to work. Say I never get matched up against the person I'm allied with, and he/she gets killed by his/her opponent during the course of the tournament. Does that mean I have to write my own version of the ally getting killed (which probably won't match up to what his/her opponent wrote)?

Sooo yeah, I get kind of confused about pre-made alliances. I'll think on it, though!

Don't be so sure about that! I think it'll be a tough call for the judges for every district.
