Redirect to original
Description
This time, the picture in question had a nice little time having only been posted to Twitter and Facebook for a time before now. In fact, instead of using the dA mobile app to post this (because the picture was taken with my phone), I literally just saved it to my computer. The clarity is much better than I expected it to be!!
Anyway, like the other two pieces I've redrawn here, the original version of this was done over ten years ago, and the good news is that due to how certain things were drawn, I can safely track it down to precisely somewhere in my seventh grade years (mid 2008 to early 2009)! I actually even surprised myself with how different the two pictures looked!
Not that I don't think my other redraws are any good because they're digital, but I think I also just really like doing redraws this way because the changes are more readily apparent to myself.
I'm still not very good at lineart when it comes to digital stuff so I literally just clean up the sketch a bit and call it a day. Traditional art is also just easier for me because I have more control over how the pencil/pen goes across the page and sometimes my tablet goes really janky. It's why I like using the blur tool in FireAlpaca to kinda blend the lines a bit; it just makes it look cleaner. I've had a tablet for a good three years now and I still haven't got it all figured out, but that's OK because a bitch is trying.
Aaaaaaaand here's a link to the original post I made on Twitter, which also shows the two pieces side-by-side for an easier comparison: twitter.com/HisLostShadow/statβ¦
Some notes about certain design changes in the characters:
-As much as I actually kind of like the red eye color for Diddy in the old piece, I kind of adopted lady-zephyrine's headcanon of purple eyes because it's beautiful.
-Seeing Swanky in the old piece makes me cringe like I ate a lemon. It's also kind of interesting to me that he (like DK currently) had black hair in this form. (And yes, the 'you know I had to do it to them' pose in the new piece is completely intentional.)
-The original piece was from the time I started drawing jackets and collared shirts and I feel like it really shows. (It would be roughly three more years before I found my footing on how to draw either.)
-Normally when I imagine Cranky wearing that ensemble in the new piece, it's usually with the shirt being either green or matching more to the color of his vest in the DKC cartoon (greyish-blue). I made it purple in the redraw specifically because it's the color in the old piece, but boy do the colors work nicely together.
-The hair in general in the old piece gives me chills. I like the flouncy hair and more varied looks to it I give them now. It works nicely. c:
-Still haven't learned how to draw hats yet but at least the redraw doesn't have whatever floppy monstrosity Diddy had in the old piece.
-To add to the list of Things Alex Still Can't Draw Worth A Damn: arms, hands, expressions, clothing, people, noses, necks, anatomy in general.
-Really the only thing that hasn't changed between versions is my handwriting. It's so faded in certain parts in the original because of age. (Also because I used to keep a bunch of my art folded in my pocket. This was one of them.)
-I drew a LOT on notebook paper clear up until ninth grade. I primarily drew in school, so it's actually surprising that the amount of times I ran out of paper to use in class has only stayed at once over the years.

Not redrawing this specific image, but I've redrawn a few other things from that era.
