Comments on this meme/comparison may be posted here, of course!These 'Draw this again' things used to be popular a while back. I don't think I ever did any, despite actually always having wanted to redraw old stuff. It ain't too late I reckoned, so last night I picked a REALLY old work from my gallery (I don't think the original is on dA anymore, in fact) and started doodling a remake. The works may not be directly comparable, because the original was a 2-hour doodle, while the new one is a 5-6 hour work, but the style, colour palette and general composition speak loudly enough.
Usually when I've seen these memes, the time gap between the versions is like 1-4 years, and I see radical changes in most cases. When I had been drawing for four years, I never noticed that big a difference. For a moment I felt a little sad and frustrated, but after completing this remake, and looking at these two works here side by side, the difference is there, and it's a lot, even if it's almost ten years. I still have a lot to learn, and I doubt I can ever invest as much time as the more dedicated artists out there can to reach all the goals, but I'll keep trying with what I can afford.
I guess that's one way to say that I'm seriously going to try and draw more art again. Would be nice to at least get a new work out every month or so, at the very least.

Good lord man! I just briefly went through your gallery after all this time and HOLY SHIT you have improved!
The line work.
The color schemes.
The hair.
The folds in the clothing.
The textures!
The proportions!!
The SHADING!!
And the backgrounds...... Damn those are some amazing backgrounds......... What used to be simple sexy ladies and simple backgrounds has become something I would expect to see in professional anime and advertising......

I'LL say you've improved!! I've been around for a most of your years on here and while I haven't always commented and sometimes just plain forgot DA existed.........I can tell you here and now that you have become a wonderful artist. Don't ever let anyone make you feel otherwise..... Not even yourself!!! You have changed! You have improved! And while all things change..... There is still one thing that has remained constant.
You love art.
You love to draw it.
You love to look at it.
You love to receive it.
Art is who you are and it always will be no matter what happens in life.
So don't ever think your stagnating or that you don't love art anymore and want to just stop........ Because that isn't true.
You may slow down.
You may change styles.
You may stop drawing beautiful women.
But you'll never stop being an artist...... And you should take pride in that.
I'm here. I've been here. And I'll stay here. I've finally become more active now that school and life has settled down so you'll be seeing a lot more of me. I hope I can do my part to make you feel like the talented and APPRECIATED artist that you are.
And if you wanna have a new friend in up for that as well. I understand that life can be hard and sometimes you just wanna vent or talk it over with some outside unbiased source. So if you ever want someone to talk to or just be buddies with then I'm here!
I hope you have been having a wonderful life while I've been away from DA because while I was here before..... You brought a smile to my face every time you posted something. Now while I don't know why I'm in such a sappy mood I'm 100% serious about wanting to be friends if your interested.

That was a surprisingly heart to heart monolog. Quite unexpected, in a positive way.
I already know that creativity is an integral part of me. Something that I need in my life. I've modded games, made traditional and digital art, tried 3D modeling, game design, photography... Sometimes it takes me to a point where I feel like I want to be good at everything, then feel like I'm not good enough at anything. But it's comparison pictures like this that always help me get over that momentary feeling and notice that I've made a difference, and that this type of art is where I feel like I've really achieved something. Wouldn't hurt to receive the occasional comment like yours too, of course, but the realization still comes from within oneself.
It's funny that I still get that 'stuck' feeling every once in a while, even though back in 2006 or so I already felt like I had exceeded all the expectations I set for myself when I started doodling my first anime pictures. I guess that's part of being an artist. A yearning for, to put it simply, more. You can never really be totally satisfied, but you can be happy with what you've achieved, if you allow yourself that much. I try to.
Anyways, thanks for all the kind words. I really appreciate it. I'd say we are already friends. At least that's the philosophy I usually go by. If we're not enemies, we're friends.

Woah, the level of detail is amazing now... the folds of the hair, skirt, and fabric around the breasts are all more "real" feeling, in a very sexy way~

Folds and greases can be tricky. That's certainly one thing I wasn't good at back in 2004. Thanks for reminding me of such a concrete thing that has improved! Hadn't really thought about it.

Not sure what you mean with 'one on top and another below', but there's one deviation that compares the old and new version (this deviation), and another of only the new version. This deviation is really just an extra for those that are interested in a side-by-side comparison, while the other is the actual gallery piece.

When i look at some deviations, it shows up twice. I see the before and after, then i see the SAME deviation below it.

Sounds like a problem with dA and/or your browser. My guess is it's a browser specific issue.

My friend says he's had the same thing. I think somehow the deviation splits into its normal version and its enlarged version. Hopefully this gets fixed or there's a toggle button

I like this meme. Artist Evolution is great to see, and reminds me of several of my favorite webcomics, which started with very amateurish art and have evolved masterfully.

Serial and web comic artists usually need to draw same characters and settings again and again on a daily basis, which in itself is constant practice, so many of them tend to improve dramatically.
I wish I had the motivation for a regular web comic.
