The story behind this picture is that Niwa (the sad one) keeps trying to grow himself a friend, because he doesn't have any, so that's what the thing in the broken tube is: some kind of creature, still in its fetal stage of development. Unfortunately, since Niwa works in a military lab, he's not allowed to have friends. So the powers that be keep sabotaging his work. :C
