Description
Traffic getting to the airport was a nightmare. The car park was no better, with cars and taxis weaving in and out narrowly dodging each other.“Can we finalize the fare now?” Christina asked while the taxi driver was waiting for room to pull in. “I’m in a bit of a hurry, I’ve got ten minutes left before I have to check in.”
The taxi driver gave her a slight nod and pulled up the fare, he even managed to slip in an extra ten dollars, knowing Christina didn’t have the time to dispute it. As she had finished paying the driver managed to pull into the bay and Christina jumped out of the car before it came to a complete stop, almost tripping over in the process.
She rushed around to the back of the cap and pulled her suitcase out of the boot. It was only a small case so she flung it out of the cab put it on the ground and sprinted towards the terminal, she didn’t even bother closing the taxi’s door or boot as she figured someone else will hop in it.
She raced to the check in desk and was allowed to jump the queue as he flight’s check in was almost closed.
“I’m sorry ma’am it looks like we’re overbooked,” the receptionist informed Christina as she scanned her tickets.
“What do you mean overbooked? I paid for the tickets ages ago,” Christina said in a raised voice.
“So do a lot of people, not all of them show up. You arrived late so unfortunately you lost your seat,” the receptionist explained, trying to get rid of Christina.
“But I need to get on this flight, I start back at work tomorrow and there’s this huge deadline due soon and if I’m not there it’s my ass on the line,” Christina tried to make the young girl see reason, even though she knew there wasn’t much she could do.
The receptionist paused for a moment as she examined Christina. She gave her a smirk. “It just so happens we are trialing a way to handle situations like this but it’s a bit iffy at the moment. If you’re adamant about getting on this flight, I can make sure you do.”
“Thank you, thank you, thank you” Christina almost leapt over the counter to hug the other woman.
The receptionist called someone over. “Can you please take Christina over to our special check in area?”
“Wait don’t I need to check my luggage in too?” Christina asked as the other person began escorting her.
“That all gets handled there,” he informed her as he took her behind closed doors, bypassing security. The area she was taken to was right next to where the luggage is processed, inside a small room with a single desk, pet carriers and these weird rings. “Okay take a seat,” the guy offered as he stepped around to the computer, he logged on and filled out her ticket information and printed off a few labels. The first label he put on her suitcase, the second was one of the rings and the 3rd was on one of the pet carriers.
“Wait I don’t need a pet carrier...” Christina began to protest but he just raised his hand to silence her before picking up the ring he put the label on. He then opened the ring up and walked over to Christina attached it to her neck. “What are you.. Oww.” Christina felt a sharp pain in her neck as if being given a needle.
Her body felt numb as she tried to stand but her body wouldn’t follow her commands. “I can’t move, what have you done to me?” She asked.
“I’m just preparing you for your flight,” the guy replied as he clasped Christina’s head, lifting it from her body. He then placed her down on the desk as he got a cage ready.
“I didn’t agree to this,” Christina pleaded as she noticed the ring was still on the top of her body though now it had been split in half.
“I’m sorry but you’re in the system now, your head and luggage are due to be on that flight in fifteen minutes.”
“What about my body?” Christina screamed.
“I could book it in but that’s going to be excess luggage and for a body around the sixty kilogram mark, minus the weight of your head of course, booked in at the last minute you’re looking at close to a thousand dollars.”
“I can’t afford that!” Christina freaked out.
“I didn’t think you could, don’t worry though you’ll get your body back free of charge, it’ll just be on the next available flight, someone on the other end will give you a call when it lands.” The guy then picked up Christina’s head and put it in the carrier.
He didn’t say another word to her as he picked up the carrier and her suitcase and took them out to the rest of the flight’s luggage, he then left her there in the pile ready to be loaded.
Christina seemed to be taking this better than expected and she only really had herself to blame, she begged to get on this flight by any means. This was the by any means. She just wondered how she was going to explain it to her friend that’s picking her up and her co-workers. At least her body shouldn’t be too far behind, after all the guy told her the next available flight.

Yuup! I would have opted for this on the last flight out of Saigon, but than some Viet would have a gringo body to abuse for ?
I did make it back on one piece 3 times, though the last time I left almost 80 # s in the jungle.

Thanks, it really is a practical solution, if you don't mind. Just wait until all the airlines are doing this. More seats on a plane = more money.

I'm sure if this, or shrinking, or any other kind of transformation was available, the airlines would be eager to jump at it...

Shrinking at that height could have negative consequences, not a safe bet for flying (at least it needs to be tested)

A fun little vignette, though I'd like to see the idea explored a little more, There are a couple of run-on sentences and a tense mixup, but no major issues that I noticed.

Nailed it Hobbs. Awesome piece, and definitely a lesson on understanding the terms of an agreement before accepting!
