Critique for FF ^^

First off, I love the expression on it's face! It's so cute~
I also love the shading in this, and the detail you put into each feather is really nice. Though the face is, to me, the most eye-catching part of this. The expression, the detail, and that darn cute little beak is perfect. :3
I think the background is distracting though. All the lines are very noticeably going in different directions. Use the patience you used while doing the feathers and apply it to the background; keep all the lines the same direction. Regardless, you're obviously very talented! Keep up the good work!

hi there, I'm from #FeedbackFrenzy and would love to give you some feedback!

First of all, your patience should be honorated. The feathers look so awww! I never could do something like this and your reference (I think you worked with one?) must've been good. but, I have to say, it seems like one leg is missing. I don't know if it's possible because the barycentre is a little more beyond where it should be of the owl's legs and feets are placed there where they are. if you just added (well it's easier to say than to erease that all) a food/leg on the edge of the stone or trunk, so it's left foot, it would look as natural as it could be.
The rest of the owl is great - maybe add a little more shadding in her eyes - but there's nothing to add anymore.
The stone/trunk/whatever looks lovely, too. I like how the rough is changing in the smoother part, and the snow above it. maybe you could add a little blue shadding on the snow, it would give the whole a little more contrast.

Well then, the last what's left is the sky. First of all a compliment that you drew it all by hand (I would've been too lazy and painted it with the computer). but if you do it traditional, I would advice you to use always only ONE direction of the lines. for normal sky, move from left to right or from right to left. for rainy pictures it's okay to use lines from up to down, but then use them only. don't mix them up together because then you have a confused watcher who thinks this owl sits in a tornado or something. if you don't have powerful wind, rather have one direction. I know it's a hard job but totally worth it for the effect.

I think there's nothing more to say, I love the owl and amire you because of your patience, just work a little on barycentres and the sky.
wonderful artwork, keep it up!

eviri here, from #FeedbackFrenzy #35

First off, excellant job on the feathers! The shapes and the markings are wonderful, and the shadows under them define their shape well.

From my experience with scanning anything more than 300dpi isn't going to make a difference. And you really only make things 300dpi if you're planing to make a print of it. And I agree with the others that the background could use some work, having a complete background with something in the distance will really make this piece 100% done.

Hello from Feedback Frenzy!

I'm going to be stealing =LittleKirara 's format for the time being.

The Good: One of the things I really like about this picture is that owl gives off a feeling of calm power. You can tell he's a dangerous predator, and that you're just lucky he doesn't consider you food. I think it's the sort of feeling you'd want to get with an image of a bird of prey.

The anatomy and shading also look pretty good, and I can tell you, the work on the feathers was well worth it.

What could be improved: The blue background is a little bit all over the shop. You can see the pencil strokes you used to colour in the area, and the colours themselves aren't consistent. I found that, back when I mainly used to do traditional art, it was best to draw tight little circles to fill in large blocks of one colour. It does take awhile, but it makes your colours nice and consistent looking.

All in all, I think this is a pretty good piece .

I'm critiquing from #FeedbackFrenzy

The first thing that caught my eye was the background. I know it's hard to fill in large spaces, but your pencil strokes are all over the place. You need to pick a direction and stick with it. If you need to go around something or fill in a small space, try short strokes that follow the same direction of the others. If you find that it's difficult or time consuming to fill in the blank space, try cropping some of it out or adding something else to the background. For this picture, you could probably crop an inch off each side to have less background.

The owl looks pretty good. The eyes are a bit uneven. I think the left one needs to be moved down about 1/4 of an inch and the pupil needs to be a little smaller to match the right one. The black on the feathers is nice, but the feathers themselves need to be a bit more pronounced. Try going over the edges in a light grey. I think the belly area and the tail need to be a little lighter too.

Overall, you did a good job. I think the main thing you need to work on is smoothing out the background.

Hi there hobbnob1! I'm leaving this comment on 'Cold Hunter' from the FeedbackFrenzy gallery

Good job on the cold colours in the picture here, and the contrast between the black and white in the owl's feathers I also especially like the detail put into the downy feathers around the owl's beak, it helps the bird from feeling flat.
I understand that using colored pencils means you have a limited palette, but perhaps trying blending some new colours together, for example putting a little blue into reflections on the feathers/eyes. This will link the b/g and f/g well (remember that the background reflects onto the owl). Also, try not to smudge the pencilwork too much, as this can cause you to lose all that fantastic detail
Overall, the cold, sharp colours and the piercing stare make you feel as if you're in the middle of the tundra watching this beautiful creature
I looked through your gallery too, and you're definitely showing the potential to become an amazing artist, keep it up!

Hi! Moon again from Love the feathers and eyes! They're quite spot on and the eyes just give off this condescending look like it's saying "What you looking at?" The tail looks a little off and the rock is not very dark and random as all rocks should be. But the owl more than makes up for it. Also, I really don't like the sky, it's way too bright of a color compared to the rest of the piece. It kind of washes out the owl and it's the first thing you really see... Next time, try a much darker color, or don't even give a back ground.
I like what you did with the owl, and I have to admit I feel a bit of a fangirl because I automatically assumed this was Hedwig...

Hello there, Im Jazmine and Im a part of #FeedbackFrenzy 's contest!

First of all, I'd like to say, love the owl and the feathers have great detail and the texture does wonders for realism. He's beautiful!

What I think you can do to improve it is the background. Now I can see why you chose to do it all blue, all the white space needed to be eliminated and it's not easy coloring all that, but you spent a great deal of your time on the feathers, I'm sure, so why not spend some more time on your background?
You can put some clouds or trees in the distance, making sure they dont over power your main focus of course. Something else to add something to all that blue, you know.

Overall, the deviant is amazing! I mean the owl is staring right at me all angry like, though they all appear that way. Again, the detail. Just freaking BEAUTIFUL!

You my friend, keep up this badass work and your gonna go far~ I hope this was helpful to you, bro.
Have a freakin flyin week~! ;D

Hi there! I'll be critiquing your work for #FeedbackFrenzy !
I really love the way this piece looks, the owl is really well done, and I love the feel this one has to it, it makes me cold just looking at it!
The rock the owl is sitting on is really well done, and I love the way you blurred it, and the effect it gives. I also really like the markings on the feathers, they all look really well-placed but random at the same time, sort of like what they would look like on a real owl!
However, there are a couple of small, easy-to-fix problems I noticed, nothing too big though. The eyes, even though they both look great on their own, don't match, one of them looks lower than the other, and one of them has part of the eye hidden and the other one doesn't. I know that eyes can be hard to make perfectly symmetrical, but if you spend the time to mess with them until they look good, it really makes a difference in the overall look of the piece when it's finished. Also, if you added more shading to the eyes, that would make them look more 3D, but it's not that necessary. I think the background would look better if all the lines were going in the same direction, or it was blurred, but again, that's a very minor issue. There might also be some minor issues with proportion, but I don't draw birds that often so I wouldn't know. However, I find it helps to use reference photos until you feel pretty confident with the anatomy.
Overall, this piece is really good, I hope my suggestions help you make it even better though, and I wish I had your skill with drawing birds! Great job!

Feathers do take ages! Its remarkable. I really like this piece, you have nice proportions and have a solid grasp on wing shape and direction. I also like the detail on the rock, though it does look really square. The eyes are really beautiful and large. The shape of the tail seems a bit short, I'm not sure if it is but it appears so to me. You should consider a different method of colouring sky blue, the pencil lines are really obvious. If you could colour the whole sky with the soft pressure and consistency of the sky you coloured close to the bird, then you wouldn't get the lines. The shading could also be darker and have more definition. I really like the piece, its very beautiful and expressive. Great job!

Thanks, yeah I really wasn't happy with that sky, but doing the same pressure all the way through got very monotonous :/

You can use water colour pencils, they are really good, you just wet them and spread them with a brush until they are even

Hmmm I got some watercolour pencils A few months back, haven't had a use for them yet, will I have to use proper watercolour paper with it or will regular art paper do?

Rinnii In reply to hobbnob1 [2012-02-07 22:37:19 +0000 UTC]

I do alot of my water colour work on regular paper, as long as you dont push to hard with the pencils or drench the paper you will be fine. Water colour paper is just more robust.
