Yes yes! French makes it possible to be understood in many countries in the world.
France, of course, but also Romandy, Wallonia, Quebec, New Brunswick (these 4 are not countries, I grant you), the two Congos, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal, Benin, etc. It's also the second native language of European Union.

Yeah. I'm Italian and I remember studying French at school. Now I go to high school, though, so I don't study it anymore. I can barely remember anything about the vocabulary
So that's why I say that it's still better to know some English.

English is what is called a trade language, or lingua franca, which is used in commercial communication or in linguistically diverse places. I see where you're coming from, though. You learn English as part of your regular curriculum, but in American schools, foreign languages are elective classes and aren't required.

The first part is accurate to my knowledge, but the second varies from state to state. Speaking from experience: Florida, for example, requires at least 2 years of learning a foreign language, usually Spanish and/or French before you can graduate high school, due to the high concentration of people that either came from or live in the islands in the Carribian. After those two years, you're not obligated to take any more unless you want to.
Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any of the other state's laws on this.

I'm from Illinois, and the high school in my town only has Spanish and German classes, and as far as I know, the state could care less whether you learned a foreign language or not.

Then I guess the foreign language classes fall under State Law rather than Federal Law.

English is spoken in a wider area of the world, even if it's hard to learn for others.

France is THE country of cheese. If you like cheese, you'll find your happiness there.
Among the French cheeses I could mention camembert of course, but also roquefort, morbier, comté, époisses de Bourgogne, tomme des pyrénées, brie, and so many others whose enumeration would be long and tedious.

In this case, you've to say "J'aime les croissants !"
"Je suis croissant" means "I am croissant" ^^
And... I love them as well! Even though I prefer "pain au chocolat"
