They are absolutely gay. They both identify as female and they are in a romantic relationship. Garnet is held together by their love. Not their friendship, their romantic love.

You know that agender people who identify/like using the term "gay" exist right? Like being genderless does not mean that one cannot use the the word "gay" to identify themself. Gay just means that one is romantically and/or sexually attracted to people of the same (or in this case, lack of) gender as oneself. Thus, since all gems are genderless, one can come to the conclusion that Ruby and Sapphire are gay as they share a mutual romantic love for one another.

Agender people are people who do not identify as any gender, be it part of the binary of female/male or any other tangible gender (for example, many non-western cultures have what is generally referred to as a third gender and even genders beyond that). At least, that is my understanding as a cis (aka not trans/not nonbinary) woman. You should look further into learning about and researching gender identity on the internet or other sources for more information. Googling terms is one way to start. Lastly, I think it is important to understand how the gems were declared genderless and how that acts as a representation of actual people who identify with a lack of gender instead of just listing it off as a contextless canonical fact of an alien rock species.

Yes, the Gems are a species without a gender binary, but that also means that all the Gems share a gender in lacking one. Thus, since "gay" just means loving romantically/sexually someone of the same gender, the term is applicable. Many people in the nonbinary community also like using the term "gay" to sometimes describe their orientation (even if they are not strictly homoromantic/sexual). However, I must admit that it was my fault for not specifying that I knew the Gems lacked gender, but Β please note that a lack of gender does not exclude individuals from the label of "gay" (just look at actual agender people who like using the term).Β

Though all the gems that have made an appearance on the show take an externally female form. Perhaps no gem takes a male form as their form of choice, which could indicate that all gems identify as female, and are relatable to intersex people. So then would it even better valid to label them as lesbians when they live in a world of women?
