Toad was actually one of the first characters I started designing for the Mario Project, originally intending him to be a much bigger part than he was in the games. I drew TONS of concept art for him... and hated all of them, then I hit a design I loved... once I removed the "mushroom hat". I later worked the hat back in for other characters, mostly for the guards. This was the design I went with... but after seeing it colored... I realize that his color scheme SUCKS BIG TIME! After I got this colored, I went back and looked at the mushroom retainer sprites for Super Mario Bros 1 (the sprites is where I like to get my palettes from... to remain "true" to the game... that sounds geeky...), and I found NO blue whatsoever... just red, white, and peach color. I'll have to recolor him sometime with a red motif.More Toad at the bottom... looks like he had too much Taco Bell and is getting ready to fart or something. o_O
Koopa Troopa on the right. Another one of the characters that are giving me problems. I like the design... but it looks like a better hammer brother than a troopa. *shrug*
Incidentally, I drew all these in straight pen. I don't draw in pen... I usually don't even ink my stuff. These were the product of not having any MONEY for lunch today, and scrounging up just enough money for a cupcake and a mountain dew. Guess something good came out of it. I got weird looks for the troopa in the break room... BAH! They just don't appreciate the troops of Bowser...

give him a giant club, the hammer bros have black shels and helmets, make them less big, make them more agile and tall, and make the koopas big cave turtles

That is one awesome Toad! I really have to say it is refreshing to see a version of Toad who looks like he could actually deserve his job as peaches protector.

I couldn't really tell it was Toad either. I like the shape of his head, but I think the position of the spots threw me off. It looks awesome anyway, I've never seen Toad looking badass instead of annoying.
But like that one guy said, they're your concepts, keep em how you like. Can't wait to see more out of the Mario Project, I wanna see your take on Yoshi.

These look great! I say keep them however you like. If you make toad look diffrent then he's diffrent. He's supost to be the princessess protector so he can be however you like.

I'm not sure about this Toad design. I gotta agree with one of the reviewers; no one is not gonna know that's Toad until you say its him. If it were anyone else, they would make him look human and his mushroom head would look like one of those pointy Japanese hats, but that would be boring and totally ruin the toadstool people thing.
Maybe if you make his head more dome-shaped, or a bit of a bisket shape, it would give out that mushroom-sense. Cause if you look at the pic were he's squating you can try to picture his head more dome-shaped.
I wonder if you'll include Donkey Kong and point out that Donkey Kong thing that rumors say it happened before the whole Super Mario Bros thing. I also wonder if Cranky truely was the Donkey Kong Mario faced and if so, how did he aged rapidly while Mario nearly stayed the same.

So, yeah. Donkey Kong is included. That story arc happens before the brothers wind up in the mushroom kingdom.
Donkey and Cranky are indeed one and the same, but neither are his real name. That's a hint, by the way. Hee hee. Course, after the Donkey Kong arc, Donkey's never seen again, because the story focuses on the Marios, who are elsewhere...

All your designs rock, hon! I think the troopa rocks hard, and Toad's new design makes him look capable of kicking ass! If you don't like the colors, here's a link to a picture that has a lot of different Toads, maybe you could get some ideas from it for the colors. [link]

The Koopa Troopa looks excellent. The hammer brothers could have a black, spiky shell or something like that. The powerful troops could look like alligator snappers, I guess. Will there be different shell colours and affiliated "powers", like in Super Mario World?

Yes, different shell colors will have different powers for the most part. Not so much the SHELL itself giving them the power, so much as their choice of offence.
