Description An otter sailor coolly rides out an unlikely escape from pirates in a surprise stream of wind - forcing a route of diagonal maneuvers upstream of the air current. Whilst the larger ship may have been taken off-guard, the row boat likely has enough power to close the gap between their quarry.

Heading into the wind from a water vessel is defined as "tacking,"which can be done by running at angles to the wind, but not straight into it. (Alternatively, traveling with the wind at your back is called "Jibing".)

I also made a time-lapse video of most of the drawing process, which can be viewed here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rmcd6w…

Thank you!

I've heard about the Mistmantle Chronicles, but unfortunately I never got to read them: I imagine they aren't too different from the Redwall series though, which is largely what this is based off of. There's definitely a nostalgic quality to those kinds of books.

Reepicheep! One of my favorite characters from Narnia. I remember him in sort of the same pose from the movie, now that you mention it.

Wow, this ranks up there with some of your all time best work, Holt. I love the ominous storm clouds that color the piece with the danger that the otter is in. All of the colors fit together for the theme, and I like the expression on the otter. Great work!

Really? I'm honestly kind of surprised that this one would get that kind of praise - I felt like it wouldn't be well-received in comparison with most of the new stuff. I feel like I rushed a few things near the end and that the comic filter would come off as a bit too gaudy. I'm honored by the compliment though! Just wasn't expecting it to get much attention.

It's well deserved, and I'd put it up there with your piece with the Long Patrol Hare with the lantern. There's a lot to be said about establishing mood in a picture, which elevates it over just a picture of a character. Granted, not every scene has to have these huge moments, but it fits what you were going for.

Well thanks man!
I guess it's true that I haven't usually made many of them with deeper backgrounds, and a lot of times I'm trying to fit a background around the character rather than having the focus on the scene as a whole. I got used to conveying some emotions from individual characters, but working it into an idea or emotion overall isn't something I've explored as much as I should, even though composition has been one of the main focuses.
The input is highly appreciated - you're probably the most motivational critic I've got.

Amazing artwork, I especially like the detail in the otter's fur and the background.

Thank you! I looked up some references for otters before doing this one: I didn't realize before that their fur clumps/tapers into very uniform points when they're wet, or that they actually can stand up really straight on their hind legs - not with a crook in their back. I always thought that they had more of a stooped stance since they're so long and wiry.
