This is a picture of Tom Riddle at about age 12. I imagine him as just having heard some rather ugly news... perhaps why he was abandoned in an orphanage, or something equally upsetting.Medium is pastel chalk.

This is just how I imagined Riddle at the orphanage. You are wicked good at facial expressions. Did you draw this completely from imagination or did you use some sort of reference?

Beautfiul.... that reminds me of my fanfiction that I never finished... still haven't finished reading all of the books so I don't know how much more they talk about it or how inaccurate my story has become since they've released them, haha... (don't really care about spoilers anymore either so no worries).
My story had a flashback of him at the orphanage, and there was only one kid who didn't make fun of him... they weren't great friends but Tom at least appreciated it. Then later on when he was at Hogwarts during the year, he found out that the orphanage was destroyed in the London Blitz, and because that one kid was nice to him, he was hurt and angry and started to hate muggles, thus... well, you know the rest.
Curious, does that contradict any developments since? haha

Well, it's unfinished, and it's probably HORRIBLY inaccurate now that the rest of the books have come out, and I don't know if I'll ever get around to reading them. I'm very hesitant to post it just because even if I have a disclaimer saying I know it's inaccurate, there will be people who will be all over me like wolves asking if I bothered to read the books... and each time I'll have to be like, "no, I didn't finish them, did YOU bother to read my disclaimer?" XD
The kid was kind of a Mary Sue anyway... lol

He is simply stunning. Absolutely beautiful. There's no other way to describe it. He does seem have this almost other-worldly quality about him. I <3 Tom Riddle. Can't wait to see what they do with him in the sixth movie...

Yeah, I have a difficult time accepting that he was just evil from birth. I do think that the odds were stacked against him, having decended from a violent line of wizards, being essentially abandoned by his father, living in the orphanage and having no context of love...etc. He probably did suffer a bit of abuse when his magic first started to appear, as it would have scared the other kids, and he would have been instantly labeled as a freak. I assume that he started down his path of evil when he discovered that he could use magic to hurt those who hurt him.

yeah, I pictured his past too a bit different from the one in the book. At the first sight Tom looked as he was born evil, with the things he did before going to Hogwards, like killing the bunny and frighten the two children( wonder what he did to them :/). But still I thing something happend to him to make him this way. I can't belive he was born that way so there must be something, something that changed him and make him the way he is don't you think? Perhaps it could be some experiences he had with other children in the orphanage or that he was treatened in a particular badly was by the adult there I'm not sure, what about you?

Yeah, but I still fell sorry for him. I mean even if he discended from a rather violent family line it still doesn't mean that he has to become as violent as them. Take his mother for example, she isn't violent or brute like her father or brother. I'd say that he was just left alone from the start, as he was really little. It could be that he started to perform magic as he was still very young, i mean Rowling said that he did 'funny' thing as he was little, but it doesn't mean they way evil. It may be that as he was doing his magic, the children and adults got a bit frightened and so the left him alone and called him feak, maybe even played some main tricks on him. If that is the case , then Tom Riddle had no-one who was there for him and no-one who loved him or cared for him and as you know love and care are really importand, especially for little kids. Probably he had learned that he could live without the others in time and as time went by and his magic increased he got revange on the others.

I've been stalking your art for a few years now.
As for little Tom, the light coloring was an experiment. I have a few pictures of him that I've yet to post - that are exactly like you've said of this one (air of an old photograph). I'm not entirely comfortable yet with using lots of colors, so I do tend to use light and shadows instead.
