Description
Step by step progress of raising Poe Pho Ming, one of the newest character from mess studio.THE illustration was done over the course of a nite, using .5 mechanical pencil on paper, scanned in grayscale, touched up and colored in using photoshop cs and painter8 with wacom intuos.
process on drawing is whole another game in completely different ballpark, so we wont even go there with this walk through.
what demonstrated here in these totem pole of screen captures are simply some simple painting techniques- hoonstyle (
mainly, it should suggest you that... in order to produce a quality image, it takes many steps and each steps must be executed deliverately, and precisely. many artists tend to drift away daydreaming as you move your pens and brushes across the canvas. keep in mind tho, if you plan out what you wanna accomplish at the end of the process, and follow your initial concept, anyone can create quality, tasty art.
there are 2 distinctive approach i usually take when i work on art.
one begins with line art. Lines initiate everything on the canvas, dominate the whole process. on the other hand, there is a way you approach with volume, and color. This particular piece, "Intergalactic beat session" falls under type A, Line art is set from the begining process, and color work goes around the line art.
cellshading is one of many mathod of art that exploits this notion of coloring.
Best way to preserve the line though out the process of coloring is having the line art in separate layer, and paint Under the line, instead of over. if you have scanned in paper, (which line art layer will have both Black line and White surface) then "multiply" layer attribute is your best friend.
if it was volume oriented approach, like typical "painting," i'd only use one layer or maybe a few extra normal layers, but when it comes to line art oriented, i rely heavily on layer works. i suppose some experiements with layer settings and different brush works should be done by yourself, and develop your own style with those techniques.
In these screenshots, i noted layer attributes, and opacity percentage. that should give you an idea and you can possibly mimic that on your own way.
somple people wonder why their art isnt as complete and well done as other artists' work. the answer is simple. you havent done all the work others have done. you can make some clever sketch with afew strokes and that can be your style, but if you do wanna make something complete, and advanced work as some of those industry professionals, you will have to spend your time and apply multiple techniques to a canvas. now you know this intergalactic beat session wasnt done with blink of an eye.
when its just you and your canvas, be patient, and enjoy every little steps.
if you learn to enjoy applying every little details, anyone can make nice technically advanced piece.
hope this walk though will do something nice for your artistic endeavor.
hey, why dont you send me a little note if you ever do something based on this tutorial? id be more than happy to see your work, and i will give you my honest opinion. that will make a nice perfect circle.
thanks everyone for enjoying my work. those who commented and added me to your friends list, i owe you a sushi and sake. one of these days we will hook up and enjoy nice art discussion over some unagi!

Somewhere in Resources -> Tutorials ... either Misc. or Photoshop (since the tutorial is largely Photoshop related).

Thank you so much for showing us how you make your art!
Hoon, can you make an in-depth line-art tutorial? ( I don't know if you have already - I haven't dug through everything yet - you can yell at me if you have ) My line-art always comes out bad, so I don't know what I'm doing wrong..

A very nice walkthrough tutorial. Its great to see how much detail that you put into your works. I was surprised you use the actual penciled line art though. I like this method myself most of the time even though I get hassled about doing more freehand digital painting. Ah well.
I'm getting ready to upgrade to an intuos 3 after using a graphire for the past 2 years. I got kind of spoiled after using the intuos2 and the pressure settings the multimedia department used at my school.
Did it take you a while to adjust to the large area of the tablet? I'm not exactly sure what size tablet you have, but I've been using a 4x5 space for a while and I know its a bit different.

its not that im trying to show if my SIZE or anything sweetie, but i have 12"x18" intuos. old model. [link]
i still have more art work thats done on pencil and paper lineart. i had this intuos for about year now. intuos makes my art look messy.
well about adjusting.... i didnt have any other preference before, so there wasnt alternative but to get use to it fast. i did all the yoda book digitally, and now i think of it, i wasnt very familiar with the tool. especially with goddamn PS which you can change the angle of canvas orientation.... but after the yoda project, i got a hold of painter, and bam, wacom and these digital imaging apps are my bitches.

Great tutorial! It's so nice of an exelent artist to take a little time out to show the adoring fans how they make the magic, it wakes a few up from the daydream that it's all done so easily, and it shows the rest the little technical bits that we just haven't been able to figure out. This was highly enlightening and I very much plan to use some of the techniques shown here in my future art work

Hrm...I like, Is good to see the multiple ways different artists around here do their work (In particular published artists and the like). Gives some insight on how to better one's art, or (to look at it another way) try different techniques/methods that could be of help.

I appreciate the tutorial.. Just a quick question, how important do you think the wacom is to your work, or is it more for making things go faster since you just have more control...
It's nice to see that you're not like some of the high and mighty artists around here who develop their secrets and feel that those around them aren't worthy of the knowledge... I have some illustration/drawing skills irl but have never taken the time to learn to draw digitally, and I really appreciate your attitude towards learning and passing that stuff on.

ive been thinking, if i have to give up one thing between wacom and dual monitor, i will give up wacom. i love dual monitor settings. being able to use twice as much of desktop space.. especiall for photoshop is sooooooo fuckin great. though, my optic mouse... like 4 year old... is dying, and i use tablet for pretty much everything i do now.
wacom tablet, none other than wacom intuos series is by far most powerful artilery and artist can obtain, aside from softwares. but i can asure you, scanner, pencil and paper, optic mouse can do the job. you just gotta get around and be able to modify your techniques accordingly.
ive been using wacom tablet for exactly one year. and of course, i did digital art long before that. using mouse certainly have PRO.
and... high and mighty artists? where? i havent seen one around here to be honest with you, as far as im concerned, they all are pretty much the same skill levels here.

how long would you say you've been doing digital art anyway?
also.. I guess maybe there aren't as many as I thought, but I get the impression that there are those around here who would flex their page views as some sort of status symbol. either way, thanks for the tutorial

Ah, very usefull, I'll keep your advice in mind next time I attempt illustration. I seem to be always in a hurry and do my illustrations very quickly... like in about 15 minutes max. You are an example of patience and I will effort in this halloween illustration I have in mind. Many thanks.
