Description
Florian Square is a buzzing place in Budapest, Hungary with lots of car and pedestrian traffic. It also features some antique Roman ruins of the once-was Roman fortification Acquincum that guarded the northmost border of Roman Empire in the 2nd c. AD. along the shores of river Danvbivs (Danube). After WWII the prefab housing projects cound't avoid the old quarter of Óbuda that was full of charming narrow streets with single storey little houses and excellent restaurants. Combined with really bad sanitation... Very few remain of the old Óbuda, even less than the ancient Acquincum. The tenement houses ate the old town, that so deeply reflected the Trastevere of today's Rome but a smaller (less tall) scale. All the good times vanish, they say, possibly except the prefabs. They were built for 50 years lifetime, about 60 years ago.
But we still have some great mosaic floors in the underground below the overpass and the camp and town of the 2nd Legion about a mile further to the north. We have the civic town remains in the south with an Amphitheater that was not as tall as the Colosseum but presumably as tall as the Arena in Verona; while its arena was bigger than the one of the Colosseum with all the bells and whistles, even for a naval battle game. Oh, those Romans!, would sing the Boney-M if they miss the lyrics of their Rasputin. Some forum remains are visible in the middle of the image and the prefabs behind the overpass, and a very few building of the old Óbuda is hidden behind those big concrete monsters. And where are the people? Where are the swarming cars, trams, buses and pedestrians? I took the picture to eliminate them. Not literally but from the view.
