Description
The Castle of Levice (Léva in Hungarian) was built in the XIII. c. to protect the mining towns of the Felvidék (then part of the Kingdom of Hungary, now Slovakia—Horná zem in Slovakian). Those towns produced significant quantity of gold, silver and other important metal ores and this was a good reason for a stronghold. The fortress had interesting (mean: troublesome) past with sieges, fires, different landlords, etc. In the middle of XVI c. a palace was erected around it that now serves as a museum. During Rákóczi's War of Independence (1703–1711) the Hapsburg forces occupied it (1703) and as it suffered major damages beyond repairs it fell into ruins. Later some conservation works were stabilized the remnants of the walls and buildings while the town of Levice grown around it and encircled the castle hill.
