Fabien couldn’t say he was a saint - in his youth he’d done a fair share of sneaking around the harems of other stallions and breeding with their mares under their noses. In his wake, he’s left behind many foals, but he’s not proud of it. He was desperate to pass on his bloodline as quickly as possible, but as a young, budding stallion, he wasn’t quite strong enough yet to take care of his own herd. So… He did some things he wished he could take back.

That being said, Fabien became worried when Astrid went missing for an hour. She returned to him, of course, but she wouldn’t speak to him - wouldn’t even look at him. It made him… Nervous. What had happened while she was gone? What prompted her to leave?

The stallion tried to put it in the back of his mind, but he couldn’t deny that something was amiss - something had changed. The mare had a strange tension about her, and everytime Fabien would look her way, she would downcast her gaze in guilt.

Fabien stared at the tobiano female as she grazed nearby, his expression conflicted. Astrid felt his eyes, and glanced at him, before nervously turning back to the task of eating. Hoofsteps approached Fabien where he’d been lying on the ground, and Firo lowered himself next to him, releasing a grunt as he did so.

“Ahh… It’s such a beautiful day.” Firo smiled.

“Indeed.” Fabien replied flatly, transfixed by Astrid.

Firo noticed, and smirked. “Something on your mind, Fabien?”

“... Yes, actually.” He replied seriously, dodging the suggestive tone of the young stallion’s voice. Firo noticed, and his playful air dropped instantly. “Something’s… Something is wrong with Astrid. Ever since she went missing.”

“Oh… “ The chestnut lad blinked, looking over at said mare as she walked away to avoid the uncomfortable stares coming from the two stallions. “Now that you mention it, she does seem a bit standoffish. Maybe it’s…You know - That time of the month?”

“Tss. No.” Fabien scoffed. “We’d both know if that were the case.”

“Oh, okay.” Firo nodded. “Maybe you should ask her. Something might be troubling her.”

Fabien furrowed his brow in worry, and looked at his lieutenant. “Do you really think that would be a good idea?”

“What do I know? I’m just the lieutenant.” Firo snorted, standing up and walking away.

Fabien sighed, before heaving his large figure onto his hooves and heading off in the direction Astrid went. Thoughts and possibilities ran through his mind, causing his nerves to tremble with anxiety. Calm down. It’s only Astrid. Fabien thought, taking a deep breath to relax himself - it didn’t help.

Astrid’s scent wafted through the air, causing Fabien’s nostrils to flare. She always smelled like lavender. But there was another scent that caught Fabien off guard… Something smoky and dark, like the campfire he’d smelled, but muskier. He emerged through some foliage, and found Astrid… But with another stallion.

Fabien had caught the horses in the act of a romantic rendezvous, the silver bay stallion’s hocks locking up as his muscles tensed and his brown eyes widened at the sight of the large, imposing stallion. Astrid whipped her head around and froze, petrified with fear. Fabien was shocked… Appalled! How could Astrid do such a thing?! Was he not good enough for her?! Enraged and offended, Fabien charged at the stallion, breaking up the couple as he roared in anger.

“SONOFA - “ The stallion barked, stumbling back from Fabien and rearing up to meet the charging stallion’s attack.

Fabien tore into the poor male, sending the silver bay stallion packing. Fabien chased him a bit of a ways to make sure he was indeed gone, then watched from afar as the stallion returned to a band of mares and foals - possibly his herd. Fabien snarled. He had his own mares… Why would he defile mine?!

Hoofsteps trotted up behind Fabien as Astrid approached him, but she stopped when she saw how tense he still looked, lowering her head timidly. She waited to be shouted at - scolded, punished for her mistake. She worried Fabien would kick her from the herd, that she would never see June again… When Fabien finally turned back to her, he gazed down at her with a look of extreme disappointment, but he said nothing.

She lowered her head even further as he walked past her, beckoning her to follow him without having to say it. Wordlessly, she did, trailing behind him like a scolded filly. When they returned, the herd was waiting for them with confused stares. Firo approached Fabien to ask what happened, but the young stallion backed off when he saw his leader’s stone cold expression - knowing better than to push his buttons.

June frowned when Astrid approached, but knew instantly what troubled her when she smelled the scent of the silver bay stallion on him. June’s eyes widened in shock, and she opened her mouth to speak - ask her friend why - but no words came to her. June turned away solemnly, and Astrid sluggishly slumped onto the ground, emotionally exhausted.

Fabien found a spot on the top of a hill, where he could watch his herd and make sure his mares didn’t wander away - but he didn’t turn to look at them, he didn’t want to look at Astrid. He didn’t hate her… He could never. But he didn’t know how to feel. Firo stared up at his leader, feeling pity for the poor stallion, then turned his gaze away to give Fabien some dignity.

The next day, it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Juliette wouldn’t shut her gob, though.

“Shameful.” Juliette said disapprovingly. “Mares who betrayed my old stallion were kicked from the herd and left to fend for themselves with their bastards.”

“Not helping, Juliette.” June snapped, glaring at the older mare as Astrid silently walked alongside her.

“Astrid should be glad Fabien hasn’t left her to the wolves!” Juliette said with a haughty smirk.

“JULIETTE.” Fabien barked, whipping his head around to give the mare a stern glare. The entire herd stopped abruptly as Fabien did, said mare freezing in place with a petrified look of fear in her eyes. “Now is NOT the time! Keep your mouth shut, or else!”

Fabien’s eyes lingered on the mare for a moment, until she gave him a stiff, brisk nod, then he continued to lead the herd onwards. Juliette remained quiet, but she would throw glares at June and Astrid over her shoulder occasionally.

The herd stopped at a grazing spot an hour or so later, with Fabien isolating himself from his mares to keep watch. Astrid felt such an intense pain in her chest, watching Fabien turn his gaze away from her, as though she were dung under his hoof. She regretted her actions immensely, and felt as though she had to fix the situation. But what could she do to convince him that it wouldn’t happen again? She was pregnant with the silver bay stallion’s foal… What would Fabien do to it after it’s born?

Her stomach churned at the thought. I at least have to apologize… I chose this, I have to make amends. She thought, steeling herself before reluctantly scaling the hill towards Fabien. His ear flicked in the direction of her approaching hoofsteps, but he didn’t turn to look at her.

She stood next to him, her head lowered. “Um… Fabien…?”

“Hm.” He grunted, acknowledging her.

“H - Hi…” She said timidly.

“... Hi.” He responded reluctantly.

“I… Guess I have some explaining to do.” Astrid stared at the ground, transfixed by the way her hooves dug into the soft ground.

“Indeed.” Fabien agreed icily.

“I… I can’t defend my actions. It was a moment of weakness, and my instinct forced me to follow that stallion. I guess he thought I was just a lone mare.” Astrid sighed. “But that’s no excuse, I should’ve… I should’ve come to you about my needs. I understand if you want me to leave…”

“No. I don’t.” Fabien replied, finally looking at her. His eyes were soft, but sincere. “I… I understand instincts. I just feel betrayed. But I’m willing to look past this, so long as you promise me this never happens again.”

“Never. I promise.” Astrid responded readily. “I’m so sorry, Fabien… I should’ve thought about how you felt.”

“I forgive you.” Fabien said softly, stepping forward to tuck his chin over her neck and draw her in for an embrace. “Don’t listen to Juliette, Astrid. I would never leave you to fend for yourself with a foal. I care about you too much.”

Astrid’s heart warmed at that, and relief washed over her. “I’m… I’m so glad to hear that. But - But what about the foal?”

Fabien made a face, then sighed. “I… I suppose I can tolerate it. I don’t have much choice, do I?”

Astrid smiled, and nuzzled her nose against his chest. “Thank you, Fabien, you don’t know how much that means to me.”

“Mmh.” Fabien hummed in response, a slight smile pulling on his lips.

“Fabien!”

The union between the horses broke up as Firo galloped up the hill, eyes wide. Fabien frowned as he turned to his lieutenant.

“S - Sorry to bother you… There’s a mare here. She wants to speak to you.”

Fabien raised a brow, glancing at Astrid, who mirrored his confused expression. Fabien turned back to Firo and nodded. “Very well, let’s go see what she wants.”

Firo lead Fabien and Astrid down the hill, to the treeline below, where June and Juliette were speaking to a worried looking bay dun mare. She chewed on her lower lip nervously as Fabien approached.

“Are - Are you the leader of this herd?” She asked.

“I am. What’s the problem?” Fabien asked professionally.

“I… I’m sorry if this is weird, but… Every herd I’ve gone to has turned me down.” The mare said timidly, pawing at the ground. Fabien noticed scars on her body, and this was explained by her next sentence. “I suck horribly at surviving on my own, I’ve been attacked more times than I can count by predators. I’ve been lucky enough to survive… But I worry that luck won’t be on my side for much longer if I continue to live alone.”

Fabien felt immense pity by the poor mare. Stallions from other herds were probably off-put by her many scars, possibly seeing them as unattractive. But Fabien saw scars as marks of experience - surely this mare could hold her own in a fight.

“Well… You don’t have to be alone anymore. You’re more than welcome to join my herd.” Fabien said with a warm smile.

“R - Really?” The mare lifted her head, eyes brightening in surprise.

“Really.” Fabien nodded.

“Oh, thank you!” The mare breathed in relief. “You won’t regret your decision, being attacked by predators has given me lots of experience in defending. I can definitely be useful in that field!”

“We’ll see. My name is Fabien.” He introduced himself. “This is my lieutenant stallion, Firo, and my mares - Astrid, June, and Juliette.”

“Ah, it’s nice to meet you all! I’m Lynn!” The mare smiled brightly.

“Welcome to the herd.” June smiled warmly.

“We should probably get moving soon, it’s getting late.” Firo pointed out.

“Ah, you’re right.” Fabien concurred, looking up at the darkening sky. “Come, ladies.”

A cave was the perfect place to settle down for the night, it was dark and cool, the perfect shelter from the heat. The mares laid in a group - Lynn seeming to be grateful to finally be sleeping in the safety of a herd. Fabien wondered if she’d actually had the chance to properly sleep while she was alone…

The stallion watched as the herd bedded down for the night, then looked outside of the cave as the sky began to darken, and stars twinkled to life. Firo walked next to Fabien and gave him an encouraging smile.

“You should sleep, I’ll keep watch tonight.”

“No, no, you sleep. I’ll watch.” Fabien brushed the young stallion off, but Firo remained firm.

“You haven’t given me the chance to do my job yet, Fabien. Let me take over your duties, so you can get some sleep for once.” Firo rolled his eyes, annoyed.

Fabien sighed. “Fine… But wake me if something comes up.”

“I will. Goodnight.”

“Goodnight.” Fabien replied, before walking over to the pile the mares had made and settling down next to them.

They seemed to appreciate his presence, and snuggled up closer to him, Fabien smiling slightly before falling asleep.
