Boy howdy I've in an art slump and it's been going on for almost a month now. Hell, I forced myself to get this finished simply because, I haven't felt like doing anything arty. It really sucks and I just hope it soon passes.
Anyway, I thought I would try and finish some new Monster High artwork, but unlike my previous Monster High characters, this guy was first created when I was...12? Either way I had just seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the movie) and got inspired.
When he was first created back in...'93-'94, Raven here was originally a vampire, but I could never think of any real back story for him, let alone any distinguishing personality traits (aside from chivalry, does that count as a personality trait?), so after a good 10 years of trying to work with the poor guy, he wound up being cast off like so many of my older OCs.
Then recently, I re-watched The Monster Club (in all it's cheesy, low budget glory, which featured Vincent Price's only portrayal in his entire movie career as a vampire), which was one of my favourite movies as a kid (I remember telling *Enamorte awhile back about the "Stripper" scene in the film), and Raven awoke in the back of my mind, demanding a bit of a makeover as it were.
And then Raven became a Shadmock rather than a vampire.
What is a Shadmock? Well, Shadmocks are best left described by the vampire Eramus to horror writer R. Chetwyn-Hayes in the movie:
Eramus: "You see first we have the primate monsters: Vampires, Werewolves, and Ghouls. Now a Vampire and Werewolf would produce a Werevamp, but a Werewolf and a Ghoul would produce a Weregoo, but a Vampire and a Ghoul would produce a Vamgoo. A Weregoo and a Werevamp would produce a Shaddy. Now a Weregoo and a Vamgoo would produce a Maddy, but a Werevamp and a Vamgoo would produce a Raddy. Now if a Shaddy were to mate with a Maddy or a Raddy, the results would be a Mock."
R. Chetwynd-Hayes: "A Mock?"
Eramus: "Frankly that's just a polite name for 'Mongrel'. You know it's quite simple really. All you have to do is remember the basic rules of Monsterdom. Vampire sup, Werewolves hunt, Ghouls tear. Shaddies lick, Maddies Yawn, Mocks blow, but Shadmocks only whistle."
R. Chetwynd-Hayes: "Shadmocks?"
Eramus: "If a Mock were to mate with any of the other hybrids, their offsprings would be called 'Shadmocks'."
R. Chetwynd-Hayes: "And they only whistle."
Eramus: "Well they don't do it very often."
R. Chetwynd-Hayes: "It doesn't sound too terrifying."
Eramus: "Ohhhhhhh, but you should see the results of a Shadmock's whistling. Shadmocks are the lowest in the monster hierarchy, and yet they have this Power!"
R. Chetwynd-Hayes: "What happens when a Shadmock whistles?"
Eramus: "I heard of a man once who saw the results of a Shadmock's whistling. That's all he saw...and yet...and yet..."
And that's a shadmock. Shadmocks are considered the lowest in the monster kingdom (making them most likely lower than zombies in accordance with the Monster High canon). Despite this, shadmocks are normally feared by other monsters as well as humans who do not even realize their heritage. Even Raven's own parents gave him up out of this fear...fear the shadmock will whistle in the event that they were upset (this ability isn't used often and it's only used if the shadmock is upset, frightened, or threatened. Shadmocks have little control over this ability so one would have to be very careful in their presence).
Lucky for Raven, he was adopted by the vampire Eramus (who has a vast knowledge of monsters) and was raised by the old vampire. Raven eventually became employed as a waiter at the Monster Club to help him get over his anti-social behaviour. Later, Eramus would send Raven to Monster High is hopes that the shadmock would make some friends...friends who would see past his mixed heritage and not fear him.

You know, you're never too old for toys, especially Monster High toys. As hard as you work and and much as you go through at said work, you really need to just give in and get a doll. Besides, you grown-up-ness makes me feel bad and weird for buying these dolls. ^.^;

Yeah, and it's getting more annoying. All closes now. And with Mindy back at work that means walking home. A Front Row Seat is opening close by, I might have to check it out. I don't want to, but I can't handle all these closes all the time. 8 hours on a registrar with only cleaning is sucky. I think they are trying to get me to be a keyholder because that position doesn't have to close. I get that they want me to, but that's not the right way of doing it.
Maybe I will have to once I see one I really have to get. I think I was put off by all the kids looking at them lol

Well, some people get it confused with The Monster Squad, but that movie does not star Vincent Price or John Carradine and is more catered to children then the Monster Club. ^.^;

You should, you'd be surprised how just having these dolls is calming. It's really weird, and then brainstorming OCs is also fun. I'm almost tempted to collect basic dolls and Ghoulia's, but GB Ghoulia is only available in the five-pack. ^.^;

Well, whether you've seen the Monster Club or not it's worth a watch. Hell, I'm tempted to bite the proverbial bullet and buy the $45 DVD (I'm not sure why it costs so much in the States) when I get my grant...after I pay off some bills first. ^.^;
Well, it still has to be better than the Family Dollar. And maybe you'll find a guy who will actually like you...or at least not crush on some little boy. ^.^;

Well, the Monster's Club was made in England but it's available here in both the US and the UK, but it seems the US version has gone up to $45 for no apparent reason while the UK version is still maybe $10 at best. ^.^;

I think SailorV comes out the same time as the re-release mangas in September. Maybe I'll get lucky and find them myself. I should get my financial aid refund by the end of next month. After this semester, it'll be going up to about $4500.

Yeah, at least the Midnight Hour DVD is understandable since it's out of print, but the Monster Club isn't.
Well, you just need more men in your life. Get a job at that video store. At least video stores are more interesting and you can tell a person's personality by what they're buying...or get a giggle out of the person who rents a ton of pron and then adds one off-the-wall movie in an attempt to make themselves not look like a total sleaze.
And don't forget to get yourself a Clawdeen or a Ghoulia. Hell, you could try for a Gloom Beach Clawdeen and buy her some clothes.

It's just hard getting stuff like that. Like us and the last of teh BTVS comic. After our Walden Books went out Hastings didn't carry as many so now we need to get them online, but we never seem to.
That is true. Plus, I can talk about movies for hours... And now one of the ladies at work is complaining that the boy and I are getting more hours even though we are part time, she is full, and dont' have kids...so she got a day of mine. Excuse me... we both work hard for our jobs. We are never late and never call in. And is those things. Pus, we still have bills. Sure I live with Mindy, but I help her pay for rent and things, and my own food. He thinks I should tell her that, but seeing how I have told her a few things that could hurt me, a few months ago, I better not. Anyway, she told me the rental store offered her a management spot over there, maybe she should go. It wouldn't be as much stocking or as many customers.
I saw Ghoulia bowling again but still couldn't do it. I did get a nerdy Gir hoddie, shirt and hair pins. The shirt has a pink bow tie on it. I got a lot of complements on it yesterday. All girls, but oh well. Oh day a guy will notice how awesome I am. I wonder if we will get Spectra, she's awesome too.

I'm not exactly sure what it means by when a Shadmock whistles. It causes destruction, or something of the sort, I presume? Perhaps even a warning before danger strikes, or something?

Verily. You either wind up dead or horribly disfigured from the whistling (in the movie is sounded like white noise or a long-winded single cricket chirp).
Well, you also have to remember Raven emits a horrifying aura, that humans (and probably most monsters) sense instinctively. Your ghoul might be a bit wary, that gut feeling going off and all. ^.^;

Oddly enough you can still pick it up on DVD in your merry ol' country for roughly $10 while it's going for $45-50 over here. My mom used to rent this A LOT when I was a kid, plus they would play it on Elvira as well.

DVD's arn't worth anything over here, noone buys them here so they sell them all for like 3 for £10 and all the DVD stores went out of buissness a few years back ^.^;;
yeah he's pretty flexible to use anywhere since he isn't tied in to closely with a cult classic, that there is no movement beyond parody.

naah UK players on a whole won't play american DVD's you either need to buy a speacial TV and player, or hack your player useing a code you can get online, I did that on one of mine, but yeah most UK TV's can't display region 1 but maybe plasma is different I don't watch tV anymore.

Hmmm...I wonder if I can do that reset on my PS2. My DVD player sort of died years ago so my PS2 and my PC are the only DVD Players I have. ^.^;
I've been wanting to get the Korean version of "The Beyond" along with the French version of Phantom of the Paradise...not sure if the latter is region 0 though. ^.^;

Yeah that makes sense. I think I'll ask Hiri some questions anyway. Of course in Monster High, it seems a lot of the canon character Monster Parents are dead under normal circumstances. Like Medusa, Imhotep (like we couldn't pic up on that one Mattel), and Dracula just to name a few...although Dracula can just come back via cult rituals. It works in Castlevania.

Yeah, unseelies are all good, but Tinkerbell does not a good MH character make. Someone made a rainbow Tooth Faerie spawn, but she has sharp teeth and is the spawn of the tooth faerie from "Darkness Falls".
Yeah I understand your point. You know, I'm surprised no one's touched on the Dark Crystal for MH characters yet. I'm tempted to ask you if you wanna make a set of Ur-Ru/Skeksis teachers. ^.^;
Yeah I'm having the same problem. I'm think it's stress actually...but all this importing Rps is taking tedious, but oddly calming. O.<;
