I love the irony of the most bashful character also being the most expressive.

Judging by what I've seen in interviews, Toby Fox seems like he has an inner Alphys (the source of his creativity but also a source of inner torment) protected by an outer Papyrus (his caring, nurturing, fun-loving side) - minus the egoism. Note: Papyrus is an egoist, not a narcissist. If he was a narcissist, then he wouldn't be so eager to build up the confidence of others. He'd be more like Patrick Bateman from American Psycho.
I'm wired in a similar way except my inner Alphys is protected by an outer Undyne (kind of like Walter Sobchak from The Big Lebowski minus the extreme PTSD episodes).

That's all so interesting. From what I know, it's not uncommon for creators to put a piece of themselves in their characters and works. Personal experience and character are great inspirations - they allow people to connect to the work as well as the creator. I think that's why Undertale strikes a cord with many of its fans - the characters and the story is definitely the game's strongest traits.
I totally relate to Alphys myself, with some of the inner torment that I've faced in the past (especially with depression and anxiety). I actually took an online quiz a couple years ago to find out which Undertale character I was most like, with each character having an individual score based on my answers. I got Alphys as the top one, with Napstablook only a couple points behind, followed by Toriel, Asgore, and Sans to round up the top five. (I did a few other quizzes, but I found this one to be pretty accurate.)
