Description I've loved blowing things up with Gardevoirs recently.

I know what you're thinking: "Recently? Her 3DS broke! So she can't play Pokemon Y!"
You're right, unfortunately. However, I have been playing Pokemon Showdown (Online simulator) quite a bit, so I rebuilt Blossom's set and slapped it on there. Now, all of you Pokemon boffins are also probably saying "Silly Kris! Hyper Beam is a crap move!"
Again, usually, kinda right. However, that's where Mega Gardevoir's ability - Pixilate - comes into play. Aerilate, Pixilate and RefrigerateΒ  all have the same basic effect, but for different types and that is to change Normal-type moves (Like Tackle and Tri Attack) into the selected type; in this case, Pixilate turns normal type moves like Hyper Beam into Fairy-type. What these abilities also do is increase the base power of the move by 30%. This also has the effect of changing the selected move into one that is actually the same type as the user, which means that they get the STAB (SameTypeAttackBonus). Let's do the maths!
Hyper Beam = 150 base power
STAB Bonus = +50% base power
Hyper Beam + Pixilate (+30%) = 200 base power
Hyper Beam + Pixilate (+30%) + STAB Bonus (+50%) = 300 base power.
Basically, Gardevoir, my favourite choice of Mega Pokemon, is capable of destroying a single pokemon (that doesn't resist fairy-type) in return for having a turn to recharge afterwards, so I usually keep Blossom until the very last moment of a battle.

Oh right, I'm supposed to talk about the picture too, right.
So, as I was saying, I've been playing with Pokemon Showdown and had fun with using Hyper Beam as Mega Gardevoir. I also found out that shiny Mega Gardevoir looks less like a bride and more like a widow. If I could, I'd get two Gardevoirites in-game, but atm I can't, so once my 3DS is fixed and Pokemon Bank is release, I plan on trading my shiny Gardevoir up to generation 6 and using her as my main Mega Gardevoir - or main mega full stop.

I'll admit, I had a lot of fun colouring this picture. Shiny Mega Gardevoir is very cool looking and Hyper Beam was ridiculously awesome to draw and came out well, in my opinion. So hey, have a change from anthropomorphic horses and instead have a big picture of a pokemon - Enjoy!

I've found Hyper Voice to be a more useful choice myself - 175.5 base power after Pixilate. However, it's a gen 5 move tutor move only...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HotKrisBun In reply to professionalperv-69 [2014-07-13 15:51:05 +0000 UTC]

Well, it depends on what you want. Hyper Voice is more reliable, but also harder to get and less powerful. Hyper Beam is much more likely to KO something, but leaves you open for counterattack afterwards.

It's a case of 4-moveslot syndrome. It would be great for finishing a fight, if it didn't take up one of her moveslots to do so. Hyper Beam, while potent, leaves you completely open - not just to counterattack, but to something coming in and setting up in your face with something like Swords Dance, meaning you kinda have to save it for the end of the fight. The question is, which is more useful - the fight finisher or the more general purpose move?

Well, for me, I've found that the problem with Mega Gardevoir is that it's not very fast and it's really pretty brittle. I run mine alongside a VoltWaving/Sticky Web Galvantula, so I can usually OHKO something without fear of being outsped. Hyper Beam will almost certainly KO something, and really it's about bringing it in at the right time and against the right pokemon. If your opponent still has an Aegislash or an Alakazam or something along those lines your attempted Hyper Beam can, as you said, give them a chance to SDance/NastyPlot up and potentially sweep your team, which is usually why I leave Gardevoir until the last moments of a battle. Of course, sometimes it's worth it if you can just bring in a Gardevoir to destroy a stalling Slowbro, or Umbreon, etc.
Hyper Beam is basically the option you want to take if you feel that the other 5 members of your team are fit to finish a battle by themselves. One shouldn't forget that Gardevoir has pretty nifty type coverage too.

Base 135 SpDefense means she's only really brittle on the physical side, and base 100 Speed actually isn't that bad with some investment. Currently I run Timid with max Speed and SpAttack; moveset is Hyper Voice, Psyshock, Will-O-Wisp, and Taunt.

Actually, the base power of this Hyper Beam, factoring Pixilate and STAB, is 292, rather than exactly 300. That's assuming you round down to the nearest one.Β Even then, if you manage to snag two or three Calm Mind boosts, then Gardevoir-Mega will even kill stuff that doesΒ resist Fairy.

(Unless you're dealing with Heatran, but a +1 Focus Blast will kill such a tank.)

HotKrisBun In reply to IntegerMova [2014-03-24 20:27:27 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I know it came to slightly under, but the tutorial was supposed to be quite casual-friendly. Just rounding up made things simpler.
I'll be honest though, one of the best things going is speedboostpassing to a stored power mega gardevoir. With Hyper Beam, StoredPower/Psyshock, Thunderbolt & Shadow Ball you're looking at some crazy damage.

Yeah, but Baton Pass receivers are sort of gimmicky. I somehow know this via reading stuff on Smellgon, even though I don't actually play, although I REALLY want to.

There was one guy I was taking on in a double battle who literally bowed out because of the destructive power I was packing:

Mega Gardevoir w/hyper beam and Braviary w/giga impact.

Both are level 100, and in mega form my gardevoirs special attack stat is a disgustingly high 412, backed by the now added STAB bonus AND hyper beams already destructive power. My Braviary is essentially my physical counterpart to gardevoir wuth a 376 attack stat plus the STAB bonus from giga impacts already crazy 150 attack.

Yeah. Nothing is standing in my way. But I only resort to using those when either A: I'm about to die and need the one last hurrah or B: If you are a cheap bastard with a team made entirely of legendaries.

I think it's really about balancing your team properly. You just build a team looking at your weaknesses and what moves you have (imagine a team with Xatu, Garchomp, Masquerain and Venusaur - you have a massive glaring ice-weakness)(you don't want to have 6 pokemon that all know Acrobatics and Focus Blast - you need to have a wide variety of attacking types), and then you take into thought each of your pokemon's strengths. If you're using a team consisting of pokemon like Archeops and Zangoose, you're not going to be taking hits very well (usually, if you're at a disadvantage, you'll want to switch out your pokemon - but not if that would just sacrifice a pokemon you could use). Remember stuff like "Alakazam is a special attacker - I should send in something specially defensive, like Gardevoir or Goodra to take the hit my Archeops would take". If anything, just play it a lot and take note as to what your pokemon can and can't do, and then take in what you see other people's pokemon doing and try to work around that so that you learn from it! Once you do, pokemon battling becomes one hell of a past-time, I assure you.

As for the picture, thank you! I saw shiny megardevoir and was like "I need to draw this now". I'm glad that you like it
