I thought I would treat my supporters with a 900px resolution which I rarely do, but unluckily the 3 watermarks. This is like a suitcase filled with gold for image thieves in the local media.

It's a pity you're worried about thievery. I would think a standard (albeit invisible) watermark and perhaps even a registered copyright would be enough.
I would've given it higher praise if you hadn't given me the impression of being a burned photographer.

Thievery on deviantART is incredibly common, as I'm sure you know. *hougaard is not expressing hubris by suggesting that this photograph would be a prize for thieves; he is simply showing caution.
Rather than debating who is at fault - the conceivably overly-cautious or "pompous" photographer or otherwise - we should lament the fact that it is extremely necessary for artists to deface their own works with watermarks to prevent others from claiming them as their own.

The theft of intellectual property forces me into taking these steps and then people like my work less

Yes... There's no doubt that theft can be a problem. At the same time, also remember "if you look for evil, then eventually evil is all you're going to find."
There are methods for setting oneself up reputably, complete with reputable safeguards. You might want to ask around about it so that people can actually better appreciate your photography, and you can have relative peace of mind in knowing how to handle the less reputable of the race.

"if you look for evil, then eventually evil is all you're going to find."
Please explain this? I don't see how it applies to this situation? Are you saying that by trying to avoid my images being stolen, that I'm looking for it?

Let's see if I can't clarify... What I mean is if you're losing faith in the honesty of humanity, perhaps you're focusing too much on the dishonesty...
The problem is our art is much like our house. If a thief want to steal it bad enough, they're going to steal it -- and no amount of precautions one takes to prevent it is going to stop it from happening.
One can take as many precautions as we want, watermarks, registered copyrights, watchdog companies scouring the internet for possible theft and so on.
Why punish the good (and the honest) because of the bad? What does it accomplish really?
This has been one of the questions that I've had going on in my head for a while (thanks to an unrelated issue), and seeing this picture, and your comments struck me enough to want to ask someone else's opinion -- in this case yours.
I don't mean to sound arrogant as gets the impression from. It's just; a need to understand.

what he means is that, if you go and look for evil, your not looking for the good, and as such, will only see the evil.
in other words (put bluntly) because you are afraid for intellectual theft, you only notice it when it does happen, giving an exaggerated picture of how often it does happen.
just trying to explain what i think he said, not actually voicing my opinion.

I think what he means is that by expecting something, you can actually increase the likeliness of it happening. Whether this is true or not I'm not sure, but rarely any saying like that is meant to be taken literally, you kind of have to infer a little.

I'm sorry, but that is like saying that by buying a gun and putting it in your safe, you're increasing the chance of someone breaking into your home. How am I increasing the chance when I'm creating more effort for the thieve to steal?
