Opinions on the amount of contrast? This is way more than it has naturally, but people are always telling me that my BW work needs more and more. The shutterspeed was 0.8 seconds.

I feel the overall contrast is good. I would maybe try boost the contrast a little in the foreground whitewash, leave the whites but maybe darken the grays/blacks. Regardless it is a beautiful image

I'm a contrast stickler in my own photographs, but this has a perfect amount. Really awesome photo.

Great photo but if you are wanting to adjust the contrast, make sure that the rocks and cliff face are darkened and the water brightened a small amount

You know what Hougard? (apologies if I misspelt your alias) I somehow thought that this lengthy apology would be quicker than a scroll up to check your spelling...that's the sort of efficient guy I am)
Where was I? Yeah, sorry but this is shite compared to your normal works & I should konw. I think I used to be a pretty good shooter but all I seem to produce over the last year or so is rubbish.
*sigh*
The ups and downs of an arttistic personality.
Please don't take offence, I call it like I see it with emotion playing a (hopefully) very small part and I truely believe you are much better than this.
VEry constructive I know (/end sarcasm) but fuck it. One honest comment in my opinion is worth a million "love that shot, it's as beautiful as the mona lisa in sunset held up by a score of hot naked women caressing the print in the garden of eden....
Please excuse these ramblings that are alcohol and drug induced but also perhaps more honest than the social conventions forced on us by sobriety.
Not meaning to be rude, just honest.
By the way I suffer the same affliction, I'm convinced my work two years ago wa thrice as good as the shit I produce now...
Sometimes you have to do like michael J fox in the classic of classic and go back in, well not future but past...new techniques and styles are sometimes just new....not good
As a caveeat, it's stil superior to 98% 0f the crap here so don't take my inane ramblings too much to heart.
/end drunken and stoned diatribe

Firstly...don't go on the internet after joints and beer. I usually wake up, run to the pc and delete all my intoxicated activities on facebook
Secondly, thanks for the honest opinion. Getting shot down every now and then makes you get up and get stronger. It's been bothering me the past while, but I struggle to force myself to think different and creatively.
If everyone on the internet stopped wowing everyone else it would do a lot for the digitally displayed arts. Our own included.

"don't go on the internet after joints and beer" haha, wiser words have seldom been spoken.
Not sure why I felt the need to give UN-constructive crit, rather unlike me.
Also funny thing is I honestly don't remember writing this at all....*ponders what else I've written in the past* Scary stuff!!
anyways cheers for not getting too upset and I think we can all agree that there is definitely too much WOWing going on online and not enough crit...
BTW how is exclusivity at Satans lair, sorry Istock, going for you?

haha...it's weird and unpredictable...2k for march, 1k for April. 50% of income coming from Vetta files.
And how is working all the corners on the street? which are doing the best for you?

I guess Satan's lair must be one of those street corners as I'm there as well. I just choose to spread around to more corners for many reasons. Top three being:
#1 Istock treats it's photographers (especially the one's that haven't sold their sole to hell for at least 6 months) the shittiest of all the sites, they have the biggest pockets yet they refuse to fix the ITPC data issue, they make submissions almost as hard as they can and they have a long history of paying their shooters industry low rates. Quite simply I would find it very hard supporting the biggest assholes around, even if that option did make me a few more dollars. There are things in life worth much more than money, I think us in the Western world sometimes forget this.
#2 is that Istock is now about 4th best earning stock site. SS income is 4 times IS, Fotolia beats it every month now and DT beats it most months. Back when SXP was around that used to beat it ever other month too. It just wouldn't make sense money wise.
It's funny how different sites perform for different people, most make more of SS than any other, but then some like you said that IS is the best, Yuri on the other hand makes the most from fotolia, followed by IS and then I think SS (though it was a while ago I spoke with him, things might have changed). Small differences you can understand but some folks comparative earnings vary wildly...hard to explain that one...well aside from the obvious - different subject matter in folios going with different customer bases on the different sites. But even that 'explanation' is pushing things I think...
But back to your question. I was inactive for about 8 months (due mostly to the fore-mentioned disgust over my own work) and my earnings roughly halved in that time. Last month was about 1.5K across all, just starting to try to haul my ass back into it...need more $$$

I need to get back into the stock forums. I'll tell you that frankly I'm fucking pissed at Istock. My earnings went up when I went exclusive, but despite 18 months of uploading I'm struggling to make progress and it's pissing me off. My goal is to get my gallery to 600 images by December and If I don't average 2k a month for the first four months of 2011...byebye-o exclusivo.

Ah, the wonders of honest crit on this site instead of "teeny boppers" loving everything. I tend to agree with mr ben here...def not up to your normal standards. Scary how high we all have to reach now eh As for the image you could prob crank the midcontrast in the water esp front/right for more drama. The rest of the photo looks pretty good technically. Rock on!

For me, b&w need high contrast...lots of blacks and whites, and less in the mid-tones area. It's one reason why I think snow capped mountains look great in black and white...all that snow and rock contrast so well.
This is really nice, the slash of light across the cliff face really elevates it into something special

Thanks Andy Mountains are just 10 times better with snow. Sadly our mountains get about 2-3 weeks of snow a year, and then it's just a small cap
Guess where I'm going on Sunday

I think the contrast is great and your tonal range is realy great. If you put more in you would lose some of the (Ansel Adams) zones. Super image - I love that line of light on the mountains!
