Description Everything in me is aching to go back to this valley in the Richtersveld NP. It has the potential for a million photos within a 30 minute walk from where you camp. Sadly it's a 5 hour 4x4 drive into remote wilderness after 800km on the highway.

This is in South Africa but the plains in the distance behind the mountains is Namibia.

The weird color is from 5 stops of grad filters.

This would have been absolutely stunning if the tree had the kind of clarity that the hills have.

Actually, everything looks a little fuzzy. Diffuse filter? Still awesome <3

Yea...lots of filters...but damn way cool...feel like you may have benefitted from stepping to the right and creating more space b/t the tree and sun...but a nit. get back there...and take me

lol...the first time I saw this tree was when a friend of mine posted it on the main S.A forums, with the comp that anyone would go for, tree on a 3rd, so I didn't want to copy

sometimes comps work for a reason...this works...but separating the two elements just seems better balanced...

kinda place i,d want a step ladder to get above that tree and shoot it against the crack.....loving the wispy cloud above the sunstar...

i'd also like to see a photo of you up a step ladder at this location....

hougaard In reply to sassaputzin [2010-07-30 08:07:49 +0000 UTC]

There two very high ledges right behind me, but then the tree starts becoming too small again. And I would have to carry the ladder from down below. The camping areas are between those smaller granite hills behind the tree.

The other issue is that another S.A tog got there first and I don't want to copy his composition, so I'm pretty much forced to shoot to the left. [link] landscape/26

This place is absolutely unbelievable. You don't have to start your car once you parked. You've got the mountains, the two massive granite hills and an endless variety of quiver trees to shoot within a 5-20 minute walk from your tent.

ok understood....it was a tongue in cheek comment about the ladder, i assumed it was miles forkm anywhere and taking a ladder would be totally impractical..
mark dumbleton has some good shots....
i should imagine having such good and varied subject matter in one area is unique for africa...looks like a crazy place....

This photo is not a standard "pretty sunset landscape" image, I like the unusual colors, and kind of moody impression, I'd say the other-worldly touch. Great job, Hougaard!
