“Do I really have to see Auntie Maria as a girl?” Enrique asked, slumping in his seat. “I’m a guy, and this is embarrassing. Why can’t we just tell her the truth?”

“Now shush!” his mother silenced. “Your auntie loves you, and you know why, so just act the part.”

When Enrique’s mom was pregnant with him, she was told to expect a daughter. Ecstatic, his Aunt Maria went all out to purchase clothing and toys for the newborn and taking up room decorating duties. She was absent the day of his birth and didn’t find out that the baby was a boy. Enrique’s mother felt horrible about it and told her family not to tell her sister the truth. For years she shielded Aunt Maria from the truth, forcing Enrique to dress as a girl named Ettie.

It was a blessing he didn’t see his aunt much, but as Enrique grew older, the needless make-up, dressing, and lies that were told when they met her made him feel fake. He didn’t want to do this but knew the fallout that would ensue if he did.

“We’re almost there,” his mother continued. “Now pull that skirt down and close your legs. I don’t want you to flash your cousins!”
