Christmas Story"Only a few days till Christmas and I still haven't finished my Christmas shopping. I'm freaking out! I don't know what to do bro!" I shouted in frustration. My brother stood at my side; hand on my shoulder as we looked through an art shop window. "I might find something in here for Kase, but I'm not sure what to get Cain or Kae. Got any ideas?"
My brother took out his phone and searched the internet for something. "June, I was thinking for Kae and Cain we'd make these," he showed me a picture of something that had a paw print on it. I took his phone and looked closer at it. "So, what do you think sis?"
"I like that! Now the thing is how are we going to make them?" I said as I walked into the art shop. I looked up at my brother and he just gave me an obvious look. "I could do that, but then it's not as special Joe. You should know that, you make Maranda things all the time." I folded my arms and tapped my foot as I looked at some things I knew Kasey needed for his art supplies.
"Well yeah, but you have…witch powers…so it makes it easier for you to get things done at last minute. Make sense?" Joey looked at me with his clean shaven face and buzz haircut. I rolled my eyes at him, grabbed some art supplies off the shelf in the aisle we were in and walked to a different aisle. "Oh come on sis, don't be like that."
"Joey, you're not supposed to be encouraging me to use my "powers". You're supposed to be warning me of the consequences of my usage and make sure I don't use them out of school. Did you not listen to great grandma on mom's side when we visited her last?" I laughed a little and grabbed a new pencil case that was nice and sturdy.
"…maybe, but great grandma Jules doesn't know what she's talking about anymore. Even if she is the same as you, she never used them according to grandpa. June, great grandma Jules is almost one hundred and ten, she's a little under the weather as well so she's not sure what's going on anymore."
I shrugged and turned to face him. "Joey, if I do use my "powers" to do these, where am I going to get the materials to actually do this? That's my main concern right now, finding the materials and figuring everything out on how to do these." I tapped my foot as I waited for an answer from my brother. He stood there thinking of an answer when a woman turned the corner and actually answered my question.
"You could go to the craft store down the block from here," the woman smiled and left. I smiled back and nodded politely before she got away. My brother put his hand on my shoulder gently and pointed at a nice piece of wood that seemed pretty sturdy for what I was planning on doing for Kaelita and Cain for Christmas.
"Ready to check out sis," Joey asked. I looked up at him and nodded happily. He grabbed two pieces of the wood that he found and followed me to the checkout counter. We checked out and headed to the craft store a few stores down and found some pretty cool fabric that I could use. We bought that and headed home so I could get a start on these two gifts.
"Joey, do you know where my wood tools are, my carving wood tools?" I asked as I walked up the basement steps into the kitchen. I saw my almost thirty year old brother standing in the kitchen with my wood carving tools that our grandfather gave me for my twenty-second birthday this year. I laughed and tried to grab them from him.
"You don't get them Junie. Unless you promise to be careful with them and give me a kiss before you go back down there and work on the gifts," Joey told me. I looked at him with an "are you serious?" look and laughed. "Hey, you're my little sister, I have to torment you sometimes like old times don't I?" he just gave me a loving smile and laugh before handing me the tools.
"Yeah, I guess Joe. Thank you for my tools," I smiled and gave him a kiss on the cheek before heading back downstairs. I got to my work station, put my goggles on and started to get to work on the two pieces of square wood.
Hours had passed and my brother came down with a cup of nice hot, hot cocoa. He set it down next to me and put his hands on my shoulders and massaged my shoulders, neck and back for a bit. "How's it comin' along sis?"
"Pretty well bro. What do you think?" I showed him Kaelita's since I finished that one first. He smiled and admired my craftsmanship. He kissed me on the top of the head and set down the piece of wood.
"Great job June-bug. I'm getting some sleep, I'm surprised Maranda isn't home yet," and at that moment our phone rang. Joey answered it with a "Hello sweetheart, I take it you're working overtime again? Okay, I'll see you soon. Don't be alarmed if I'm asleep by the time you get home." He laughed, smiled and hung up. "So June, when do you plan on getting together with your friends for your gift exchanges?"
"Well, I was thinking of the 23rd and have them sleepover if it was okay with you and Maranda and of course they're parents." I said with a slight smile.
"That might work. I'll talk to Maranda tomorrow about it to see what she thinks. You need to either call them or send them letters, letting your friends know about this gift exchange get together and soon."
"Yeah I know I was going to call some of them, for instance Sam because he lives so far away, but I can transport him here in a jiffy if he can make it. And Yuki as well, since he's not in town for Christmas this year. Oh and Joey, we still need a tree. Are the three of us getting a tree tomorrow and decorating it like a family again?" I asked excitedly. Joey turned me around to face him and smiled.
"Sweetheart, of course we are. We've been doing it for the past few years, why would we stop now?" I shrugged and looked down at my feet. My brother lifted my head and smiled. I couldn't help but smile back and gave him a huge hug. Footsteps were coming down the stairs and Joey turned to see his beautiful wife.
"I have something to tell both of you…" Maranda trailed off and Joey walked over to her.
"Sweetheart, what is it?" Joey asked worried. Maranda smiled and kissed him on the lips. She went to his ear and breathed out a small laugh. "That's GREAT! Sweetheart, when did you find out that you were pregnant?" Joey asked excitedly. I got up from my chair when I heard the word pregnant come from my brothers mouth and skated to the happy couple.
"Maranda, I'm so happy. I'm going to be an auntie." I smiled big and hugged her gently.
"I found out before I came home. I was at the doctors when I called you honey," Maranda spoke and kissed me on the top of the head.
"OH! No wonder why it was so quiet in the background," Joey laughed a little and kissed his wife on the forehead. "We need to have a celebration."
"We do, but not now. I need to finish up my Christmas presents and wrap them and both of you need to go to sleep." I went to go grab my hot cocoa from the table and took a sip of it. Maranda agreed with me and yawned.
"Honey, June's right. We need our sleep tonight. Maybe tomorrow after we get our tree. How's that sound?" Maranda took Joey's hands and smiled. Joey just nodded and led her upstairs.
"Good night, you two!" I shouted to them. They said good night back and shut the basement door. I went back to my table and finished up Cain's gift. Once I finished that I quickly wrapped them with a flick of my wand and lied on the couch that was down there.
The next morning came quick and I woke up with a startle of a crash in the kitchen. I got up, ran up the steps and slammed open the door to see Maranda crying over a broken vase. I ran to her and helped her over to the couch. "Maranda, I'll clean it up don't worry about it."
"Thank you sweetheart, that was my favorite vase too," Maranda sniffled. Joey ran out of the bathroom in his bathrobe and a towel on his head.
"Is everything okay you two?" he asked worried. Maranda and I smiled; I got up and went over by my brother.
"Make her feel better, while I clean up the broken vase in the kitchen. She's kind of upset about it. I think it's her hormones and her being pregnant, but that's okay." I told my brother. He looked at me and then the kitchen floor. Joey smirked a little as he saw the glass on the floor and sat next to Maranda. I went to the closet to get the broom and clean up the glass.
Once everyone was all settled and dressed, the three of us went out to look for a nice big and beautiful pine tree for our living room. When we found one, Joey chopped it down and I used my wand to take it home, since dragging it wasn't an option seeing as it was far away from the house and we really couldn't drag it through the streets of Autoburro.
"June, where do you want it to go," Maranda asked. I looked around the living room and saw the perfect spot to put it. That was next to our fireplace, which I just put in a few weeks earlier with my wand.
"How about next to the fireplace," I suggested. The two of them nodded in agreement and I magically moved the pine tree near the fireplace. "Now, it's time to decorate the tree and make it beautiful." We all smiled in agreement and Joey brought in the tree decorations. We started to decorate the tree and Christmas music suddenly turned on softly. Joey and Maranda looked at me and I just smiled. "Don't look at me, I didn't do it."
"Then who was it?" my brother asked. A family of six popped out from behind the kitchen counter and smiled. "Randy! Evan! Charlie! Amber and you're kids! How are you guys?" Joey said excitedly. He hasn't seen the six of them since his wedding. Evan and Charlie have grown so much and Randy's kids are super cute and also have grown so much too.
"We have been great! Now let's get this tree decorated," Randy smiled. Amber put down Lexie and Chance and came over by the tree to help decorate. Evan and Charlie watched their niece and nephew so they wouldn't get into trouble.
"Hey bro, did you talk to Maranda about the 23rd?" I asked. Joey looked at me and smiled.
"I take that as a yes and that it's okay?"
"Sure is Junie." Joey nodded.
"Awesome, now it's time to get ahold of all my friends." I said with excitement.
I ran up to my room and started on my letters and calling others. My friend Sam was my last friend to contact and since he lives so far away I wasn't sure if he would be able to make it to America in time. I called him and he was excited to hear from me again. "Hey Sam, I know this is kind of on short notice and you're in summer right now as well, but I'm having a Christmas party at my house and was curious if you wanted to come? I could have Kasey or I come get you from Australia with our broom. Okay, we'll do that then. I'll let Kasey know. See you soon Sam!" I said before hanging up. I quick called Kasey and gave him the news. He said he'd be glad to go get him on his brand new broom he got from his mom for his birthday. I just laughed, because he was super excited to see Sam again. I finished up met letters and sent them off with Tallen Claw so the gang could get them quickly rather than snail mail. All of a sudden my phone rang and when I looked at the caller ID it was my old roommate Faeatchi. I answered it quickly and she told me that she got my letter and that it was a great day to do present exchanges. I smiled and soon my phone blew up with texts and calls saying that they could all come. Tallen Claw soon came back through my window and hooted. I smiled and went back downstairs.
"You get everything done already?" Randy asked with a smile. I nodded and made some hot chocolate for all of us. Chance and Lexie came waddling into the kitchen and pulled on my jeans. I looked down and handed them each a sippy cup of milk. They waddled back into the living room and sat down drinking their milk. I smiled and finished up making the hot cocoa.
"Hot cocoa's done if anyone wants any!" Charlie and Evan came running into the kitchen all excited. They were fifteen now and they were stronger than I was. I slid them two mugs and they grabbed them, smiled and walked into the living room to drink them. Randy and Amy were next and then Joey and Maranda. The tree was all decorated and beautiful. I ran downstairs to grab my gifts for my friends and family and stuck them under the tree before I forgot.
"Are those for us?" Randy hinted and I just gave him a look and laughed. We all laughed and I heard a knock on our front door. I ran to open it and it was Kasey all warm and toasty in his new jacket. I giggled at his goatee and took his jacket.
"Hey babe," he smiled and kissed me on the cheek. I smiled and put his jacket in the spare bedroom. He went to go sit down next to Lexie and Chance and I quickly grabbed him a mug of hot cocoa to warm him up. He snapped his fingers and the Christmas music became slightly louder. He started to sing along with it and I chimed in with harmonies. Amy soon chimed in as well and soon everyone was singing. I couldn't help but smile at the scene. Everyone was happy. This was one of the best days of my life.
