Description
I have taken up a new hobby! O: I have been a huge fan of needle felting for years - I remember faving tallydragon's Needle Felted Green Dragon way back when I first started this account. I love the slightly fuzzy look of felted pieces, but I never thought it would be something that I could do. Well, when I was wandering around the local Michaels craft store a few months ago, I was surprised to find they had a needle felting section. I bought a kit, just to try things out, and made a little rabbit. It was fun to put together, so I bought extra materials, planning to do something all of my own... But then I got stuck, so I stopped and put everything away.Fast forward to this past weekend - I finally cleared out all my Christmas orders and felt like I needed to take a break by doing something not clay related. I thought it would be fun to make a needle felted corgi for my little sister as a Christmas present (corgis are her favorite breed of dog). So I read a few tutorials online, and jumped right into stabbing little pieces of wool for several hours. I am pleased with the end result, even if it is not the world's most accurate representation of a corgi (that is what happens when you don't bother to measure things out and just guess blindly). He is small enough to fit in a teacup! I am planning to make a cute little box/carrying case to put him in. :3
I really like needle felting. It's a slow, meditative process, much like cross-stitching, which I used to do a lot of when I was in high school. I like that each piece of wool added contributes visibly to the end result - this is very pleasing to me. Definitely requires a good deal of patience, though. I don't know how long this little guy took me, but I spent most of an evening working on him.
Crafted from wool roving via needle felting, with glass eyes.

I got some!! In hot pink, orange, purple, and blue, but it's a start. And I got money for art supplies, so I'll probably get some cooler colors.
If you'll excuse me, I'm going to go stab a little ball of fiber repeatedly...do you have any tips?
I hope you had a good Christmas!!!

Ooh, sounds like a fun mix of colors. The colors I have are very naturalistic, so I can't do anything too crazy with them. Have you made anything yet?
As far as tips go, uh, try not to get poked? It's harder than it sounds, I stabbed myself several times. xD Ok, real tip - you can make an armature for your piece out of pipecleaners. Then it will be poseable! I did that with the corgi, but I didn't make the wire legs long enough, so it didn't accomplish all that much. I imagine it would be much more effective for something with longer legs. I'd already made Puck's legs several months ago, so I missed the opportunity with him, but I'm definitely going to give it a try on the next piece I needle felt.

Not yet! My family went on a cleaning spree, and I was dragged along XD
I've read a book with a few tips, but it didn't cover pipe cleaner armatures Since I do armatures in my scuptures, I probably would have tried at some point, but with wire, haha.
And I will try to not stab myself!

I think you would make really cute critters with this technique!
