I'll admit. I've never liked children. But your drawing style makes them seem like the most awesome, adorable, lovable things I've ever seen. Bravo.

You know what? I don't give a fuck. If you want to kill yourself because of a TV show, you have issues. SERIOUS issues.

(All of you questioning the bath thing read this before dissing on the work!)
Well... No, not really.
Now, somebody SHOOT ME WITH INTERNETS IF I'M WRONG! but I know that eastern cultures have different rules about modest bath behavior. (*Snorts* modest bath behav-OKmovingon)
When I started reading magna (in this case, Bleach) one time the main character's little sister is like "Hey Ichigo, why don't you bathe with me anymore?" and I was like "WHAT? That's a little...questionable." just like you. But after studying more about it (I.E. reading more magna), I realized that it's more of a sibling-being-nice-to-sibling thing, like brushing your kid sister's hair in america, or helping them zip up a dress in the back. You know, just siblings helping each other. I actually think it's a little nice that eastern cultures aren't like :legasp: "Two siblings helping each other, PERVS!!!" and haven't oversexualized EVERYTHING like we do in America.
Just my two cents. Kudos HowXu on yet another amazing comic.

Yeah but there's nothing to indicate that its using eastern cultural values instead of western ones. The culture of equestria matches american more than anything, they speak american english, not japanese and even the style the comic is drawn in doesn't particularly resemble manga or anime. If it is using eastern culture then it should imply it in some manner, it's the responsability of the artist to account for the audience not the other way round and as that hasn't been done here it turns a heartwarming moment into a dirty joke for most of the people reading it.

Piecrow In reply to wittypun7 [2013-06-17 17:35:07 +0000 UTC]
I can see where you are coming from. However, in this case, I think it was just not knowing the culture, and that's TOTALLY excusable.
Let's say you were wanting to make a heartwarming fancomic of an anime you like, but you made a cultural faux pas like having someone hand a gift over with one hand instead of two. Would you want native people to freak out about that, or just accept a cultural difference and not let it get in the way? Although this is a slightly larger cultural difference. I would like to think that you would like the first.
(Oh, BTW, Dude's name is HowXu, and he has an alt of this comic in freaking CHINESE. I would think it would be evident that he is from a different country, even without actually stating it. *winks*)

wittypun7 In reply to Piecrow [2013-06-18 02:55:29 +0000 UTC]
It wasn't obvious. Names mean next to nothing and there was no way to no he had an alternate in Chinese. The english doesn't seem like it was written by someone who doesn't speak the language fleuntley. like I said the ARTIST should plan for cultural differences so they don't stain his work. This is not a big stain but it is a stain, in my opinion, and he should be told so he doesn't repeat it and can make his work even better.

Piecrow In reply to wittypun7 [2013-06-18 09:28:38 +0000 UTC]
Oh, I get where we disagree now! It is on the matter of who has responsibility for any and all interpolations of the work. I do not believe that you are looking at this point the right way. You, personally, are not his audience, nor is Western Civilization as a whole. (The original comic, after all, WAS in chinese.) He, nor any artist is under an obligation to please you or anyone else for that matter. This is the crux of the problem I have at your statement above. His job as an artist is not simply to please everyone. Igor Stravinsky's famous and beautiful "Rite of Spring" almost caused a riot at its opening because it was very different from what people expected. Should the composer have dumbed down the piece to "plan for [the] cultural differences" it would cause? If so, we would have lost a groundbreaking and beautiful work.
So now I ask you, what if his look on some social aspect is different from what you are used to? Does that make his cultural difference a "stain"? Even a "small stain?" I quite disagree!
As an artist, it is simply impossible to plan or explain every potential faux pas for everybody everywhere. It just can't be done! If you find a potential misunderstanding, it is up to YOU, as a viewer to do a little research or perhaps raise a polite hand questioning why. WHY would he do this? If it is simply a cultural difference, I DO NOT think that your culture trumps his, and thereby "stains" his work in any way.
In conclusion, HowXu really has no obligation to explain or apologize for his work to you, me or anyone else who disagrees, especially in a small social difference like this. Also, I apologize for the excessively loquacious and formal reply. (Shades of 11th grade Speech and Debate, ya know. ) This subject is simply one of my favorite to discuss. Oh, and thank you for keeping this thread polite. It has been a pleasure.
(Oh, and I do believe that our friendly debate is cluttering up this form. If you would be so kind to either end this thread next post or PM me your reply, that would be lovely.)
