In most buses in the US, there is a white or yellow line on the floor behind the driver. Passengers are requested to stay behind the line so as not to distract the driver.

Well,we don't have that here, so it's not unusual to see someone chatting with the driver, sometimes some passenger talks to the driver, and sometimes it's the other driver (when they change their shifts an so on).
