Description Ok, so I have been a base user for a long time now, and I have had lots of things said to me, like "Bases are for lazy people" "Bases are art theft" "Bases should be banned" and on and on.

But what really bugs me is the people who say they would rather see free hand drawings then bases. I mean seriously? Its like they dont even understand the point of a base. Not all free hand drawings are fantasticly drawn. So I did this. I drew Nutty free-hand and then I used a base. and yes that free hand is my best work. (see why I use bases?) Now compare them and think about it.

Would you really want to see a gallery full of shit like you see on the right? I wouldnt. And thats why I rarely, almost never, upload free hand drawings. For those who cant draw I think bases are good, becaue they most likely still want to upload pictures. With bases they can without it looking horrible.

And as long as people put effort into editing a base and give credit I really see nothing wrong with them. DA even has a folder for Bases so the website has nothing against them. I dont get why so many people do.

And also Im not trying to say that bases are better than free hand drawings. If your a talented artist who can actually draw good then go ahead. love seeing talanted work like that.

and most importantly the base belongs to
the other shit-tastic drawing belongs to me.
Although I have to admit I failed on both of the tails.....

Free hand is better, I draw it with free hand and Its FINE.
Using bases is only if you put too much effort.

Basically all of the drawings in my art gallery are drawn using bases. I draw better that way, and I am happy with my art, free hand comes out good sometimes, but mostly its terrible.

I know this is kinda old. But I will comment anyway.

Well, even though the base looks a lil bit better, I prefer the free hand. Using bases can help with somethings, but it won't help you improve and many areas. For example, those who use anime bases. They say the bases help them learn, but all they are really doing is drawing on hair and clothing, and when they are recoloring skin and stuff, they trace over it which is actually easy to do when done by computer.

So, not much benefit. Personally, I never really used a base for anything. I have traced, but that was before I was serious with art. And after a few years of free hand practice, I have actually became really experienced for my age.

I think bases should be done for fun and not for anything serious such as display or profit. I mean, they are basically dolls and it is mostly for fun. But let us get real here, I have seen a ton of base used images and not a single one of them looked good.

NO.

1.) Why are you ARGUING with people who are giving their opinions when you ASKED for them?
2.) MOST artists think their work isn't up to par. You change what you don't like to get better.
3.) I think I SUCKKKKK at drawing.
4.) The above does not stop me.
5.) Bases are an ok place to start, but if you want to get better, then you need to reference only.
6.) I prefer your hand drawn.

If you seriously take a look at it and compare it, my freehand is nothing close to the original style. At least with bases it looks decent enough to upload.

StrayP In reply to HTFlover777 [2012-06-02 05:00:08 +0000 UTC]

It isn't about being better or worse.
It is about expressing and showing yourself how /you/ do so by your own abilities, not by crutching off of someone else.

Once you start to do things by hand and no bases, sure you will have good ones and bad ones, and then you will always turn around and go "shit I used to suck", but if you just keep doing it, it /does/ improve.

I have the same problem. I feel like I cannot get any better no matter what I try, but it just works itself anyway.

There are many ways to go about it, even just experimenting.
I have a ton of examples in my own gallery from what I mean.
I even go on iscribble to watch other people draw to see how they do it. I watch people's live streams and other sorts of things or look up tutorials.

This is how my canines looked over five years ago.
I did not have a tablet or anything, and I did this all in GIMP.
[link]

This is how my canines look now.
I have upgraded to tablet, through MANY years, and also got Sai.
[link]

And I still don't like how the second picture looks.
I know others think it looks good, but I still see my faults.

On DA we want to see things expressed with your emotions and abilities no matter how good/bad you THINK you are.

If you ever need a hand, you can always send me a note or something.

HTFlover777 In reply to StrayP [2012-06-02 05:18:44 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but I dont have any abililties, thats my point.
And its not like I only practiced once, and stopped. Its been over maybe a year or 2 now, I still draw freehand time to time, no change.

And even if I did improve I couldnt look at other people's examples or tutorials because I want to be self-taught. If I did any of that I wouldnt be self-taught anymore because it basicly shows me what to do.

And both dogs look great I dont see any errors in them.
And my best friend says the exact same thing, she only looks at whats wrong in her drawings, (when often times theres none) and it pisses me off. I think good artists should take more pride in their work, instead of always looking at whats wrong. It amazes me how many talented artists think their work sucks.
I mean, with me its obvious so I think I am allowed to say my work sucks. But most other artists are good at drawing, so I have no idea why they say their work sucks.

and meh. Thanks, but I think I'll just stick to what im doing.

All I can say is practice what you preach.
Your art is lovely.
You won't be self taught if you don't even try.
Now you are only making excuses for those who are trying to help.
You don't have "an ability" because you THINK you don't.
I know people who could NOT draw what you did there. Not even CLOSE. You have a lot of talent.

HTFlover777 In reply to StrayP [2012-06-07 02:45:35 +0000 UTC]

Seriously? You call that horrid piece of crap "Talent"? Anybody could draw what I drew up there. ANYBODY. Unless they're disabled, im sure they can draw what I did easily. Its just a blob with arms, legs and eyes, im sure anybody can do that.

"You don't have "an ability" because you THINK you don't."
Just thinking that I have the talent to do something, wont give me the talent. Natural talent is something your born with, its not something that you can just easily gain through practice or "Self confidence"

KisshuSnowcake [2012-05-18 21:08:52 +0000 UTC]

You have to start somewhere.
And drawing isn't all about being good. You draw because you enjoy it.
So, don't stop drawing because you think it doesn't look good. Practice is the only way to improve.
I mean, look at this sh*t --> [link]
I drew badly, but I didn't give up and only use bases. Besides, bases don't help you do anything.
Just a thought.

FFF, yeah, everybody says that "Ohh practice makes perfect" bullshit. Thats all people tell me. And I really dont think I can improve, ive tried to "practice" before. When im done my drawing looks retarded, and then I feel retraded for wasting time drawing it.

And your drawing looks perfect, I dont get what looks shitty about it.

My point is, Drawing is a talent, and like all other talents, its something your born with. Im pretty sure I wasnt born with it so thats why I like using bases and outlines, so my pictures look decent enough to upload. Because I dont know about you but I HATE seeing crappy drawings uploaded, I only did it here so that people can compare it. you can say im not an artist all you want, but I just cant stand my freehand drawings.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KisshuSnowcake In reply to HTFlover777 [2012-05-18 21:41:44 +0000 UTC]

Hell, I wasn't born with talent! Nobody is!
I learned everything I know now, and I don't think there is one good artist who claims otherwise.
And define "practice".
It's not something you do once or twice. You have to work at it all the time for it to pay off!
But, if you want to tell yourself that you cannot draw no matter what, then go ahead. I'm just trying to help.
And besides, if you tell yourself that whatever you draw will look like crap, you're never going to make progress.
(Sorry if I sound mean, by the way, I'm not trying to be.)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HTFlover777 In reply to KisshuSnowcake [2012-05-19 00:26:54 +0000 UTC]

"nobody is"?
Well define "talent" for me then.
And also, I didnt just draw once and give up. Ive tried for a lonng time, no progress. Thats why I said I think I cant improve. It just seems like a waste of time now, because it dosent really help. Seriously, if I cant freehand draw a easy blobly little tree friend character correctly then I honsetly dont think I can draw anything.

and also "if you tell yourself that whatever you draw will look like crap, you're never going to make progress."
I know im gonna sound stupid saying this, but whats that supposed to mean? You mean if I think positive and say "I can do it" then I magicaly will be able to draw? That sounds kinda stupid to me, no offense.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KisshuSnowcake In reply to HTFlover777 [2012-05-19 13:31:38 +0000 UTC]

I would define talent as the ability to do something well.
So... What? Do you think Artists like Da Vinci and Van Gogh were immediately able to paint masterpieces the moment they were born? I don't think so. xD
So, how many years have you drawn? With no bases at all? I've drawn for about every day since 7th grade, which would be almost 5 years. I have never used a base once in my life. And I think I have made a little progress. And, that drawing I showed you was from 1-2 years ago. If you want to see how I started out drawing anime, I'll upload one of my first. It is pretty far from perfect.
And Tree Friend characters aren't the only thing to draw. Cartoon styles can be pretty challenging to get right, even the simplest ones. For example, I can't draw in the My Little Pony style for shit, but does that make me a bad artist?
I mean, if you are telling yourself that you will never be able to draw and that you cannot learn at all, then how do you expect to?
I am not saying that telling yourself that you can do it will make you magically be able to draw. But it will help at least a little. Trust me on that one, self esteem in your work can get you somewhere.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HTFlover777 In reply to KisshuSnowcake [2012-05-19 21:55:35 +0000 UTC]

well im not saying that they were able to paint RIGHT when they were born -__- gawd, you think im that stupid? Im saying that they were born with the talent so they ARE able to improve. I havent improved so thats why I say I dont have the talent.
And I drew when I was really little, but those look like crap, and are embarassing to look at. In fact, I think I threw them away. xD I kind of stopped after like, 8 or 9, I guess, I dont really remember.
And ive used bases for almost a year now. And really, I just found bases one day, I thought they were fun to use. I never set out thinking "Oh I cant draw, so im gonna use bases" I just use them for fun. I still freehand draw from time to time but I rarely upload them. So far Ive only liked one freehand drawing ive done, but even parts of it still look shitty. I only uploaded the drawings in my drawings folder to make my best friend shut up about me using bases.
And also what if I WANT to draw little HTF characters? Cartoon style is the only easy thing for me. And "I can't draw in the My Little Pony style for shit, but does that make me a bad artist?" Well no offense, but if your going to draw something, then it should be as accurate as possible...but if you dont care for drawing my little pony then you dont really have to worry about drawing it right, you can just draw whatever you like.
And oh wow. Self esteem, really? Your mindset has nothing to do with your outside work. I dont care how much self esteem someone has and they say that they can fly, if they jump off a building they will still fall to their death. I know thats a extreme example, but my point is Self esteem wont help you do something you cant do.

And im not trying to sound mean, but just because you have never used a base in your life dosent give you bragging rights. Ive seen lots or artists on here who used to use bases and now their work is just as good or even better then yours. Just because you have never used a base dosent mean you are any better then them.

and also I DONT expect to be able to draw. I dont really care, if I improve or not, I still dont know what I want to do with my life, if I do improve then good, if I dont then.......well who cares Its really not that big of a deal.

Hon, we were all bad at drawing when we were kids. XD It is nothing to be ashamed of! lol

If you like drawing in that style, that's fine, I just misunderstood you a bit.
"Well no offense, but if your going to draw something, then it should be as accurate as possible."
So, having your own style is a crime now? I didn't know, I must not have gotten that email. Fanart doesn't need to be exact to be good.
Also, that would be, "if you're going to draw something..."

That little self-esteem example you said... Self esteem makes you feel good. I mean, would you rather look at all your work and say, "This sucks! I can never improve!" or say, "It's not quite right yet, maybe I can work on it."?

And tell me when exactly was I bragging? I said that I was simply using myself as an example about how people make progress slowly. And that bases don't help make any progress. That's all I was trying to say.
Excuse me? I never said I was nor do I think I am better than anybody. Don't put words in my mouth!
If that is what I meant, then I would have said something like "I have never used a base, so I am teh best artist and I am better than people who use bases."
Also, many artists that I know who are former base users say that they wish they didn't... I don't know... I've just never heard of someone who claimed to be a better artist from using bases. :/
Oh well. I was just trying to be helpful... But yeah, I'll just stop talking, I don't think you're going to listen to me anyway...

HTFlover777 In reply to KisshuSnowcake [2012-05-20 04:35:26 +0000 UTC]

Well, I dont have a style, thats my point. So I just try to draw everything perfectly, but I cant, so again, thats why I use bases.

"Also, that would be, "if you're going to draw something...""
wow, your really going to bring up my spelling now? whats the point of that? That has nothing to do with drawing, I dont know why you brought that up, unless you just trying to find something else to bring up. Its the internet does spelling really matter?

And I just hate positivity. I used to be, there were so many times Ive thought, "I can do that" and then failed epicly. So now ive taught myself to just push back those words whenever they come into my head. I think its just smarter to be realistic and not end up doing stupid, in my opnion. I think it saves you time too.

"I didn't give up and only use bases."
I've drawn for about every day since 7th grade, which would be almost 5 years."
"I have never used a base once in my life."
Just from all those parts, I got the impression that you were bragging. people make assumptions, geez.

I just wanted to show that using bases is really not so bad. I dont know why people see it as such a horrible thing, I just thought I could show people that they can actually be good for people who cant draw. And its not like I just scribble on ears and a tail in 5 minutes either, I actually spend time on it to make it look good. But of course it "isnt real art"
But I dont care, I'll keep using em' thanks for the advice, but sorry I'll just stick to what im doing. I think its better that why.

Meh, Ive tried for a long time. Some people CANT improve you know. Thats why I use bases, if someone likes to make pictures and they cant draw, then they can use bases so their art looks decent enough to upload. I dont know about anyone else but I hate seeing poorly drawn pictures uploaded. I only uploaded this one here to compare the two. But I just cant believe how many people perfer the horrible drawing compared to the decent looking base edit. I thought the quality of the art mattered, not how much effort was put into it. :/
