Description This is my major project for my HSC (end of school test thing for those that dont know what im on about)

Its an electric bass guitar. Fretless, four string, completely custom built.

The body is 6mm of wenge, 25mm american rock maple then 6mm more wenge. Neck is solid Australian silver ash with an Ebony fingerboard (ebony nut aswell and more wenge laminated to the headstock)

Hardware is all rubbish but will be replaced later since i needed it done in time and lacked alot of funding. Pickups are good though. Fender Lace-Sensors, silver series.

and thats about it . . . enjoy

mind the dodgey photo though . . its not exactly about the photo quality anyway

looks nice, is it neck-through, or bolt on, or glued on? does it sound nice for the hardware? if you want, you could look at the one i posted of the bass i made. but your edges look nice, almost like they might be rounded as much as a Warwick.

thanks man. Its bolt on but i didnt do it the traditional way. i used a series of captured nuts in the neck and the bolts run into the heel (kinda like the old Wal's)

To be honest im not sure what it sounds like plugged in. It hasnt been wired yet but it will be soon (im planning on stealing the lace p'ups and putting them into a p-bass im assembling so ill probably get a set of standard fender p's)

I took a look at your bass and it looks pretty nice. you did a good job on the laminate work. how does she sound?

it sounds better than my other two, and it has alot less hum. it resonates better than my others because it is a neckthrough with stronger woods. i prefer it over any. but if i made another one, and decided to keep it instead of make a profit, i would change some things on how i made it, and i don,t know if that would make it sound better or not. but either way, it sounds beautiful. thanks for asking. when you finally get it set up, tell me how it sounds.

this is very beautiful. a friend of mine made a slide guitar for his hsc and used ebony for the fingerboard as well and he also used it for an inlay, the pie symbol, cause his surname is pye this is seriously good to look at.

why thankyou

its nice having people appreciate the end product . . . there were alot of 11 hour days and bandsaw blades put into this project. And hi fives for knowing what ebony is

This is unbelievably and outrageously crafty.
So anyway, you want to make me one?

really nice job i like the top 'horn' design. That looks really nice. i bet it was a bit of a pain to sand around some of those edges. i did a guitar last year, and i had a few parts that really made me want to hurt it because they were just hard to work around.

HubertCumberdale In reply to TheOctoberRain [2006-10-29 03:00:15 +0000 UTC]

that horn was the hardest part to shape and in the end it didnt end up how i wanted it anyway.

i ended up cutting a slot down the center of some dowel, inserted some sandpaper into this slot and wraped it around the dowel a few times. then i put that into a power drill. such a bad technique but it did the job. kinda.

it was hard to cut too. needed to refit the bandsaw with a 3mm blade so that i could just do the inner curl.

but im glad you like it man

yea. definately. i was lucky, my shop teacher has a spindle sander. so i didn't have to do any of that dowel-rod stuff. it was still hard though, a lot really had to be done. How hard was the wood to work with? the wood i used was really tough, cuz it's burled birdseye maple, which is ridiculous hard to cut and shape/sand.

HubertCumberdale In reply to TheOctoberRain [2006-10-29 10:34:02 +0000 UTC]

i had access to a spindle sander too but it didnt come with a drum small enough for the curl

And as far as the working went with wenge and rock maple . . . it was tough to say the least. Wenge has a really wicked grain pattern which looks amazing but is really erratic. i put a hunk through the thicknesser and it caught the blade, nearly tore the board in half and then stalled the machine.
plus its a bitch to chisel. very hard

rock maple is even harder still but its better to work with. extremely stable with really nice close grain. hard to chisel and plane but it gets a really good finish with just an edged tool.

lets just say i spent more time sharpening tools then using them

haha yea. i like Wenge. my guitar was neck thru body, and the neck is rock maple, so i know how it's hard to work with. it is nice, but hard to work with. i'm glad i only had a little sanding and working to do on the neck. i didn't even try to plane my birdseye. i just used it at the thickness i bought it, because it's burled, full of tiny little knots and curls that make it really ridiculous. what is weird is, the wood itself is relatively nice to work on, but the knots are really tough, so it would cut real easy in some spots and in other spots it would totally lock up the machines.
