Description
In the Yin Xu Royal Tomb historic site, Anyang city, Henan province. The royal tombs of Sshang dynasty were mostly square tombs with long tomb passages, which ranged from one to four according to the rank of the deceased. In addition, Shang dynasty also retained the custom of the sacrifice of living creatures, the remains of horses, livestock and human can be found on the periphery of the cemetery.

I don't remember that. However, Houmuwu Ding , the bronze ritual vessel placed on the edge of the pit, is 1.1m * 0.8m * 1.3mΒ in size.Β This tomb is the smallest one of whole group.

They are living sacrificial pits. When the tomb owner dies, his or her servants and pets are killed together and buried in these pits.
After the rise of Confucianism in Han dynasty, living sacrifice was resisted on a large scale, but this cruel custom still appeared occasionally until the Qing dynasty, when it was completely banned.
