My interpretation of it is that Liddy (the woman (mid to late thirties) with the umbrella), finds herself alone after some war, and has to survive on her own. She then comes across Arcadia (the dragon thing - her name for it), who doesn't seem bothered by her, or to care much for her. As a result of this fact, and that Arcadia tends to scare away danger, Liddy follows the creature on a path through the new and sometimes brutal world. I somehow don't see the two ever becoming 'friends' but rather maintaining a mutual relationship, eventually splitting at the end, perhaps, and I assume the conclusion to Liddy's tale would be some form of destination; spiritual, physical, or otherwise.
