Description This is a test.

This is my first full rendering digitally.

Should I push it further or keep it as is?

This is the second version of this piece. I intend on painting the whole thing, including all the borders and flowers. But my teacher wanted me to leave it like this. So I thought I'd post it for feed back. Look at the first version (Flat color) for a very detail description of the content. Photoshop.

I would appreciate opinions and constructive critism since this is an inbetween stage (even though its also a finished version).

Sorry! The descriptions are in the original version.

APHRODITE (Center) is the goddess of love and beauty. She is often shown with or riding geese or swans and depicted holding doves. Also she was born from the cockle shell. Roses are one of her flowers.

THE EROTES were the ever-youthful winged gods of love. The most famous of these were the frequently depicted triad of gods Eros, Himeros and Pothos. The Erotes were depicted as winged boys usually in the company of Aphrodite or her attendant goddesses. Other Erotes are Anteros (God of mutual love), Hedylogos (God of sweet talk and flattery), Hermaphroditos (union of both sex so never to be apart), and Hymenaios (God of the wedding ceremony).

EROS (Top Right) is the son of Aphrodite and is the leader of the Erotes. He is the god of love in its traditional sense. He is responsible for shooting people with his bow and making them fall in love. He is a young teenage boy and very mischievous. He is often holding a rabbit (but I thought that would look random... so he gets a dove).
HIMEROS (Top Left) is Aphrodite's companion and right hand man from the moment of her birth. He is the god of desire (especially sexual). He is blind.
ANTEROS (Bottom Right), (My personal hero!!!) is the god of mutual love. He also seeks retribution for unrequited love. SO yea he needs to meet all my ex-s and kill them... HAHA! Just kidding (Well I am, he's not).
And finally POTHOS (Bottom Left) the good of unattainable desires and passionate longings. Because his love for things is so far fetched and usually unattainable he is associated with paradise and the after life. It's like having a crush on Brad Pitt or something. Or wanting to be with someone who has passed away.

I think you should keep it as it is. But maybe if you pull out the big guns, and choose the right colour...then it can be really kick-ass if you vent further with it.. :'D hmm...try to go further! : ) I love the details btw.

Thanks! This painting is rather old, so I will be keeping it as it is. If I ever do in fact revisit the greek gods calendar idea. I could color it differently based on how I choose to work out the entire set. Thanks for the advice and confidence in my work!

cool, very classical
I like the complexity of the sketch verses the generally flat coloring

I kind of like the fact that not all the details are coloured. It makes the gods pop out en you discover more beautiful details everytime you look.
defenitely a fav.

yep I agree. It says I may revisit it- but I have decided that it is perfect as is.

Thanks!

EquinaSephine [2009-11-15 10:22:17 +0000 UTC]

I like how each god is showing a separate emotion, though it kinda looks like Anteros is trying to jump Pothos.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Hullabaloo2 In reply to EquinaSephine [2010-01-22 17:00:53 +0000 UTC]

Maybe- The idea was Anteros believes that he is in a mutual relationship but it is obvious that Pothos stares outward longing for something he will never have.

Anteros is the god of mutual love and affection- and punishes those who abuse love- he despises unrequited love
Pothos is the god of unattainable desires (Celebrities and the Dead)

So the whole scene is supposed to comment on an experience I have had in the past. Pothos is a real person in my life... haha

But yea there is quite a bit of sexual tension.

haha- Yea that is my favorite part too. It is a metaphor of my love life. Anthos adores Pothos...

The god of mutual love tries to love the god of the unattainable desires and love.

This Aprodite looks better to my eyes.
The erotes's hair looks better also.. and i like the skin tone

I think this version has an edge of life/realism the other one doesn't have.

But i love both.

inspiredcreativity [2008-12-23 00:58:04 +0000 UTC]

This is gorgeous as is, but why not also do one with coloring to see how it comes out. I think they would both be great, each having its own flavor.

In this version, the eye focuses on the characters in the piece, without the distraction of color around them.

Fully colored, the entire piece would be lush with color and the eye would be taking it in as a whole, then go exploring.

They each would be a masterpiece independent of the other.

I really love the look of the guy holding the dove. The dove is so symbolic of peace, freedom, and new beginnings. Oh dear, I am not so good with birds, maybe it is not a dove. Anyway, the girl is also holding one, a definite connection to nature.

In my imagination, the two guys at the bottom of the piece have a thing for each other. Perhaps wishful thinking...

All of the figures are beautifully drawn anatomically and the facial expressions are sensual and positive in energy.

What a wonderful piece.

Hullabaloo2 In reply to inspiredcreativity [2008-12-23 18:55:44 +0000 UTC]

Yea nature inspires most of my work. It is a dove- one of the symbols of love and peace in western culture. Aphrodite's birds are swans and doves. (Also goats for some reason and cupids are rabbits- maybe because they copulate so frequently?)

I probably will not color it beyond the first version. The boy with the dove is very significant in my life.

As for the other two- Anthos is the god of mutual love and despises unrequited love. While Pothos, the bottom figure, is the god of unattainable love- like that of a deceased lover or a famous person. He stares out into the distance dreaming of someone or something else. This is a play on the human experience of love- how so many people are tangled in situations that are not ideal. The god of mutual love is in love with the god of unattainable love... (If you catch my drift)

Though I'm a big fan of Anthos and much prefer his outlook on life.

Thank you for that detailed explanation. It makes the painting much more meaningful knowing its story.

In my life, I have been well acquainted with most of these gods. Unrequited and unobtainable are not so fortunate an acquaintance. Anthos is definitely the preferred acquaintance.

I am sure that Aphrodite blessed ALL love and Beauty, as was the custom of her followers...If you catch my drift.

Thank you!

This is absolutely beautiful. I love the warmth that leaving it in only the browns and skin tons gives. The details are very fine, and I think it's overall a great design!

Great piece, the detail really give my eyes alot to feast on. I do have one critique, the hair styles on the boys kind of take away from the fantasy style and classic look. But that is also personal choice
