Why ban it for? I lift my Niqab up for the security in banks, airports, police, schools...finish....easier solution and cheaper too

exactly yes! that is the correct solution that all other countries do, except France, and now Quebec.

It's nothing about security ... It's to oppress the Muslim Community and to make them find it hard to follow the religion properly and leave it or be only muslim by name... That's how I see it, and my husband was saying it's one of the signs that 'the world will turn against muslims' when the Day of Judgement is nearing... (He's an Islamic Scholar)

If Id wear a scarf over my face and walk into a bank they would push the alarm button. Just saying. I dont want laws telling people what to do but I would want people to use common sense.

That law doesn't even make sense... it's not like a face veil would make a person not need those things...

Secrets-Of-Paranoia In reply to Xiaomei23 [2010-06-22 18:35:53 +0000 UTC]

The point of the law is to FORCE them to stop wearing them. It's a punishment, mate. Just like, ' You have to go to bed without supper if you don't do your homework!' Just as childish, but not nearly as reasonable. It's really just stupid.

I am not Muslim nor do I live in Quebec but that makes me really fucking mad. If someone proposed a bill that stated that people were not allowed to wear visible Christian symbols, people would shit bricks. I really hope someone realizes this is discrimination and it does not get passed.

Great work. I know it has been said before, but I agree with the message. People should be free to dress as they wish, and be as religious or as non-religious as they choose. The government should ensure her rights rather than take them away.

That being said, I think the protester has nice taste. I like the colors and the heart-shaped pin on her veil.

That isn't fair at all.... It's like telling a Christian they can't wear a cross if they want government assistance, or a Wiccan they can't wear a pentagram, or a Pentecostal they can't wear long skirts....

We read all of the Globe and Mail articles in my Art History class, and no matter how you look at it, it doesn't make sense. And they are urging the rest of Canada to make the same laws.

Humanization In reply to kgallant [2010-05-22 06:30:38 +0000 UTC]

thats the thing, it just doesn't make any sense whatsoever! how can you deny a woman access to services she pays taxes for? the logical solution, which is what all other countries do, is to take these women aside and have someone ID them, no woman would object to that, I mean it just makes sense!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kgallant In reply to Humanization [2010-05-22 16:29:59 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, there are enough women working in goverment jobs, and they should just allow these women to take a woman wearing the niqab off to the side for identification purposes.

hybridinsurgency [2010-05-21 14:55:28 +0000 UTC]

Not to be rude but WTF kind of a law is that!? So if a woman showed up wearing the veil they would deny her something but if she walks outside - takes the veil off - walks back into the building - THEN it's OK?
Ahhh!!!!!

...
OK...
Sorry about that.

Well, obviously the photo gets a strong message across. I hope the proposed legislation does not go through.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kgallant In reply to hybridinsurgency [2010-05-21 17:44:04 +0000 UTC]

That is exactly it. They want the women to remove the niqab when entering many facilities such as the bank, school, library, etc.

It started when a Muslim woman who wore the niqab was learning french and the school told her that they need to see her mouth in order to teach her proper pronunciation, and after a debate about that, she was kicked out of the school.

It is a stupid law they are trying to pass, and it is estimated that there are only 25 women in Quebec who wear the full facial veil. They should just let those women be, instead of trying to assimilate them into our society by taking away an aspect of a culture they trust.

Totally agreed. I'm over here in the US and we're all hardcore and ignorant and stuff so... this is the first I'd heard of that sort of thing.
And 25 women! That's make the proposed law even more ridiculous! As if they don't feel alienated enough - there being so few of them.

The laws are done to guarantee the equality and the freedom, things that your religion, which expression is the niqab, denies to the women. It is not possible to be a complete western citizen and live in a democracy taking this veil. Certainly, the laws that already exist allow you to take it and allow you to express to you. You have to respect also the country in which you are and want that it feeds you.

Secrets-Of-Paranoia In reply to AlandlaBlanca [2010-06-22 18:43:45 +0000 UTC]

If you believe it is a good and right thing hat men should not see your face then why would you force them to relinquish a belief that is so obviously near and dear to them?

A girl at my high school in America had her hair covering taken off by a stupid kid and cried in shame until I and a few friends took her to the bathroom to put it back on.

I asked her if her parents made her wear it, and she said no, she was the only woman in her family that still covered even her hair, because it was HER belief.

You wouldn't deny a Jewish man his Yarmulke, or force him to do work on the Sabbath when he didn't need to, or force a Pacifist to get in a fight, 'Because he has to respect the country he was in.'

Why does a democracy, built on religious freedom and equality in expression, have to impose laws like that on their citizens?

I think that is a very unjust law, especially to single out such a small amount of women from something that is, as I can see, harmless!

While the niqab may seem like a denial of equality to you - some Muslim women don't see it that way. I am all for the equality of women, I myself am a woman. If a woman does not want to wear the niqab, I believe she should have the right to take it off. In the same vein - if a woman truly does want to wear the niqab - that should be OK, too.
I hold that it is not possible to live in a democratic country if your beliefs are being stifled. If this is happening you are not living in a proper democratic country. The wearing of a niqab is not harmful to other people. I see absolutely no reason it should not be allowed. It would be like not allowing people to do something for wearing a yamaka or a crucifix on a necklace or carrying a rosary. It's bigotry. Plain and simple.
Western citizens stand up for our beliefs and eat McDonald's! And we are ALL out of McDonald's.

That's exactly it hybridinsurgency, the fact that we live in a democratic country means we should have the freedom to practice our religion and have the freedom to choose what we want to and don't want to wear without the governments interference and without fear of such treatment.
