AN's first ident lasted from 1956 to 1986. The diagonal line indicated the dual coverage areas of North-East England and Yorkshire. AN's simplicity onscreen was matched by its individuality offscreen. AN based their studios in Durham and Sheffield as opposed to Leeds and Newcastle which irked the city leaders.
