I'm just a machinist, not a blacksmith. Mike Norris folds the billets I'm using these days.

But... - Dont you use a forge, hammer and anvil to smith the blades? Β Or are all the damascian blades made from ready-made blanks/bars and ground to the right shape?Β
I really want to get into knifemaking, (becuse of awesome craftsmen like you!) and would like to know whats the basic "minimal" set of tools i would need for a startup.

Nah, I'm just a Machinist :/
So I design the Blade shapes and mechanical elements for my Folders,
then I get a Billet of Damascus from a Master Blacksmith and craft my parts from that.
For heat-treating the Blades (for hardening) I use a small Jeweler's Kiln.

Seriously? Are these the only tools you use to make these amazing knifes?

Yeah. Β There is a little heat-treating oven and some jars of acid that aren't shown here, but that's it.
My Master is Old School. Β Oh, and sometimes an old belt sander is used to flatten things out.

Good fabrication tools.Β Nothing fancy, just good useful stuff.Β Real calipers too, not those cheap digital ones that aren't accurate.
