And Shadow‘s name is supposed to represent that out of every other rival that Sonic has, Shadow is the only one who can actually keep up with him in speed, his signature strength. Whenever Sonic runs, he always has a ”Shadow“ to keep up with)

- Both were created by a scientist (who also had ties with aliens) to be the next step of evolution (Zero, made by Willy, is the next type of robot, able to think and make choices for himself without worrying about the Law of Robotics and Shadow, made by Gerald Robotnik) and were made for the sole purpose to conquer/destroy Earth (Willy made him by the intention of helping him archive his goal and be his greatest work after death, and Gerald Robotnik cooperated with Black Doom to be their ultimate weapon) but they are actually good hearted people who had to be sealed away because of a outside force (When Wily finally finished Zero, Zero had a virus that would make him go berserk and had to be sealed because he was way too strong, and Shadow was sealed away by G.U.N because he could be too great of a danger to anyone to be left alive)

- They both would be later wake up from their multiple years long comas into the future by their future bald genius villains to be a part for their group and worked for him for a short time. (Zero was found by the Maverick Hunters to be a one as well later down the line by his superior, Sigma, who would later become the villain for all of Mega Man X, and Shadow was found by Eggman, and worked for him for the reason that he could help Shadow regain his memories and because he freed him)

- When they worked for them, they would find their new friends (Iris, Colonel and the rest of the maverick hunters, and Rouge, Amy and co. for Shadow) and of course, would find their fated blue rival who are the opposite of them that would constantly challenge them to be better and their equal. And, Maria died by G.U.N because she protected Shadow from them, who wanted Shadow dead because he was too much of a danger, that would forever hunt Shadow even after he lost all of his memories)

- They would later sacrifice themselves to save the planet and their blue themed rival, who they also acknowledged to be better than themselves, by stopping a giant space ship from crashing into the planet, and regained all of their memories right there. (In Mega Man X5, Zero would shoot himself at the space colony Eurasia, with a space shuttle to blow it into pieces, but would get effected by his old virus, the Zero Virus, then after X defeated Zero in his awaken state, he would sacrifice himself to protect X from Sigma who was about to destroy X, before he died, his life flashed before his eyes and remembered his true purpose, and was more comfortable with dying, because he did a lot of damage to the people he loved, and felt that it was for the best for everyone. In Sonic Adventure 2, after Shadow talked to Amy and started to remember more and more about Maria, decided to join Sonic to stop the ARK from crashing into the planet by going into their Super forms, when they teleported it back into where it was with Chaos Control, Shadow teleported Sonic into the ARK to save him from falling into the planet before his Super form would get drained from exhaustion, before he died, he regained all of his memories of Maria and Garald Robonik and died happily for keeping his promise to Maria, to protect the planet)
